Published

on

Synology has announced the beta release of DiskStation Manager (DSM) 6.1 and several packages, inviting the Synology community to experience the latest software and participate in the development process. “Synology is evolving to satisfy the needs of professionals and businesses by delivering tools that go beyond just storage. Today’s announcement highlights how Synology NAS can act as your office’s all-in-one server and become a central piece of your IT strategy,” said James Chen, CEO of Synology Inc.

The latest iteration of Synology’s NAS operating system introduces granular tools for monitoring the health of the system, file self-healing for enhanced data integrity, refined support for Apple’s Time Machine, as well as flexible system update options that simplify the lives of system administrators. A new Active Directory Server is also coming soon, which will allow select Synology NAS models to serve as a domain controller in order to manage users, groups, and devices in an office environment.

New applications in the latest DiskStation Manager include:

  • Synology Universal Search: A powerful search tool that helps users find everything on their Synology NAS — from important documents and multimedia files to applications and help tips.
  • USB Copy: For those who often store data on USB drives, USB Copy is a convenient tool that allows users to back up files to or from a Synology NAS by simply plugging in a USB storage device. The customizable rules allow users to specify exactly which folders should be copied.
  • Snapshot Replication: Snapshot Replication ensures business documents, virtual machine data, or other crucial files remain safe and available in the event of a disaster. The updated application introduces management tools to monitor and pause ongoing tasks, as well as the ability to replicate to a local volume for greater flexibility.
  • Hyper Backup: The latest version of Hyper Backup keeps backups safe with advanced integrity checks, reduces storage consumption with enhanced data deduplication, and allows users to customize and fine-tune version retention policies.
  • Synology High Availability: When deploying a high-availability cluster, the latest version of Synology High Availability supports running S.M.A.R.T. tests and enabling SSD TRIM on both of the servers, and allows users to add a quorum server to reduce the chances of split-brain situations.
  • Virtual DSM Manager: The latest beta release lets users seamlessly migrate virtual instances of DSM between two Synology NAS while keeping data stored on a third machine in order to avoid service downtime. In addition, by leveraging snapshot technologies available on Btrfs volumes, Virtual DSM Manager can clone and restore entire machines within seconds.

Published

on

Synology has launched its new 6-bay DiskStation NAS, the DS1621+, designed for high-performance data storage and management. A compact powerhouse, the DS1621+ enables content creators and businesses to store and protect large quantities of data effortlessly.

The new DS1621+ delivers:

  • 76% faster sequential write performance at up to 1.1 GB/s
  • 174% higher 4KB random read performance with 110K IOPS

The DS1621+ is by far the most powerful Plus series yet. Its quad-core AMD Ryzen processor features the next-generation “Zen” architecture, delivering over 2x more processing power. “Our customers, more than ever, are relying on Synology storage solutions to store and directly utilize critical data, whether for business or personal use,” said Hewitt Lee, Director of Synology Product Management Group. “DS1621+ is designed to be a versatile solution that empowers content creators and collectors by not only providing fast, reliable, and high-capacity storage, but also simplifying IT with effortless backups for PCs and virtual machines.”

Its dual M.2 2280 slots allow NVMe SSD caching to boost performance by 20x or more for commonly accessed data. The DS1621+ also supports an optional 10GbE NIC for faster network environments and more concurrent users.

“Whether you are a content creator, IT administrator, or just someone with plenty of files to store, the DS1621+ provides 6 drive bays, with expansion up to 16 bays using expansion units for truly large file libraries. Support for ECC memory and data integrity features built into the heart of the operating system, DiskStation Manager (DSM), means your data is in good hands,” the company said.

DSM comes with a variety of backup and restoration solutions that cover the most common situations. Snapshot Replication creates schedulable point-in-time recovery points, allowing easy ways to roll-back unintended file edits or even ransomware encryption. For additional off-site protection, Synology Hyper Backup enables simple, schedulable protection to keep your data backed up to Synology NAS, Synology C2 cloud storage, and other public cloud providers.

The DS1621+ can also be used to protect data from other sources. Active Backup for Business allows centralized backup from external infrastructure such as PCs, virtual machines, and Google G Suite and Microsoft 365 SaaS. Synology NAS is more than just storage. Utilizing DSM’s application ecosystem, the possibilities for data management are endless.

Want to take back control of your data? Synology Drive transforms the DS1621+ into a private cloud, with no recurring fees. Share your files across LAN environments, multiple sites, and intelliversioning lets users jump back in time to recover older file versions. Clients are available for mobile, desktop, web and other Synology NAS, allowing you more ways to access your data.

Catalog your pictures and videos in new ways with Synology Moments. Using machine learning algorithms, facial recognition, and geotag information, Moments automatically groups photos by person, location, and subjects. Built with collaboration in mind, users can edit alone, or share photos with others, allowing them to edit together. The companion mobile app enables effortless photo and video backup from your mobile devices.

DS1621+ is available immediately from Synology resellers and partners globally, together with an option for up to a 5-years warranty.

Synology Launches DiskStation DS1621xs+ and DiskStation DS1520+

Published

on

Synology has launched DiskStation DS1621xs+, redefining performance expectations in a compact tower form-factor. Pairing a quad-core Xeon processor together with ECC memory and onboard 10GbE, the DS1621xs+ raises the bar for high-performance data storage and management. The DS1621xs+ shares a powerful Xeon processor found in some of the company’s datacenter bound devices, but now in an 11.5L chassis.

Over 3.1 GB/s seq. read and 1.8 GB/s seq. write performance means you can tackle larger data sets and handle more users, even quicker than before. The company also paired it with ECC memory for maximum dependability. Together with Btrfs and comprehensive data backup options, your data is in safe hands.

Six internal 3.5-inches bays enable up to 96 TB of raw storage capacity. When that’s not enough, bump that up to 256 TB, on-demand, by adding on two additional DX517 expansion units for a total of 16 drives. The DS1621xs+ also includes two M.2 2280 slots for blazing-fast NVMe cache so that you can make your storage go over 20X faster without sacrificing any bays.

Finish content creation projects, big backup tasks, and anything that needs fast file transfers quicker with 10GbE, built-in. Slot in an additional 10 or 25GbE card to speed up and tackle high-resolution network rendering projects or provide even faster transfer performance for multiple virtual machines. Data management shouldn’t be difficult. Synology DSM simplifies difficult and cumbersome processes while still giving you ample control over decisions that matter.

Create your own on-premises cloud with Synology Drive and protect data located on PCs, virtual machines, SaaS, and more with Synology Active Backup suite. Synology Inc. also announced the availability of the 5-bay DS1520+ storage system, built to excel in home and small office environments. Ideal for data backup and organizing multimedia libraries, DS1520+ is a versatile and scalable option to create your own private cloud.

DS1520+ and DS1621xs+ are available today from Synology resellers and partners worldwide.
