Steam Greenlight started off as a noble idea to help smaller developers get their games onto Steam by riling up community interest. Unfortunately, the service was quickly taken advantage of and led to more than a few awful games landing on Steam’s front page. As a result, Steam Greenlight will be going away later this year and will be replaced by a new system- Steam Direct.
Steam Direct will be a “direct sign-up system for developers”, allowing them to apply to get their games on Steam. The catch here though is that while Greenlight was free, an application fee will be in place for those going through the Steam Direct system. This fee is intended as a way to “decrease the noise in the submission pipeline” and weed out some of the worst Greenlight offenders.
Right now, a price has not been set for the Steam Direct application fee but Valve is in talks with developers to figure out a fair cost barrier. However, suggestions so far have been broad, with some opting for as low as $100 with others saying the fee should be as high as $5000. Valve hasn’t settled on a number yet but the company hopes that this will help improve “the entire pipeline” for bringing new content to Steam.
World War 3 Launches in Open Beta Test in MENA and Turkey on September 29th
The 4 Winds Entertainment (T4W) announced the launch of the open beta of their first major game World War 3 in MENA and Turkey. The open beta is a major milestone for the team involved, which first starts with a switch to a free-to-play model on Steam, but also the launch of the MENA servers, full localization in Turkish and Arabic including voiceovers, and a handful of local currencies supported.
World War 3 launches in Open Beta Test (OBT) starting September 29, with a head start for Closed Beta Test owners on September 26, together with a new content update, a reworked Smolensk map, and a transition to a free-to-play distribution model on Steam.
Developed by The Farm 51, World War 3 is a tactical online multiplayer FPS where the world is your battleground. Outgun the enemy in thrilling, team-based skirmishes with a vast arsenal of weapons, vehicles, gadgets, and drones at your disposal.
“As T4W, our approach to this game, and every upcoming project we have in development, is to use games as a cultural bridge between underserved regions and the rest of the world.” Said Steven Huot, CEO of The 4 Winds Entertainment. “We wanted to make sure local players experience the game to the same extent as any global one, with the inclusion of local servers, localized content.”
With World War 3, the studio has combined its signature tactical gameplay and playable realism and worked hand in hand with the team at The 4 Winds entertainment to create in-game customization options that resonate with the regional players including an initial batch inspired by modern Turkish and Arabic militaries.
The game is rated GCAM 18+, NMC 16+, PEGI 16, and ESRB T for Teen.
Sker Ritual Roadmap: Release Date and Content Updates
Calling all inhabitants of Sker Island! The gates to the Sker Ritual Early Access are open for all who dare enter on October 13th. We’re proud to reveal our roadmap for Steam’s Early Access! By the end of this announcement, you’ll know what to expect on launch followed by every ‘Episode’ update until the 1.0 launch on PC & Console in Q2 2023. For more information, check out the Steam dev blogs, the official game page, the complete press kit and don’t forget to follow us on Twitter for up-to-date news.
Episode One; the very first map ‘Cursed Lands of Lavernock’ is near completion. The map will feature all objectives, trials and a boss fight with the only major feature missing being some of our top secret Easter Eggs. Sker Pass; a completely free cosmetic reward system with absolutely no premium pass option, just like they used to make ’em. The Sker Pass will launch with 50 free items (including masks, animated menu backgrounds, player icons, menu music, weapon charms and more) and each Episode update will offer 25 new items to unlock.
Discounted Full Game; we asked our community [including Discord members] how much they would pay for the game after having played the Alpha demo and the results were more than we were expecting. As we would like to encourage more people to play the game we decided that for Early Access, Sker Ritual will launch with a base price of $14.99 / £11.39 / €12,49 (early adopters keep an eye out in October) which will be raised for the 1.0 launch.
Additional DLC; optional bundles of themed cosmetic items will be available to purchase on the Steam store for $3.99 / £2.89 / €3.29. These are purely cosmetic to show off in-game. Languages; the initial launch will feature English only however, we are already working on the localisation for several other languages which we will implement as soon as possible.
Each Episode will be a new map update with the added bonus of some Sker story (with some voice acting) that follows on from the events of Maid of Sker. There’s been some confusion in the community about whether the game will feature a separate Story Mode and to answer that, it will not. Sker Ritual is a round-based co-op FPS and is not a replacement for a [hypothetical] Maid of Sker 2. Each Episode will add tons of new content including new maps, Elites, Bosses, objectives, trials, easter eggs and weapons. Plus you’ll get major gameplay updates on the Miracles system, an in-game communication system and so much more. Our update schedule is as follows: October: The Cursed Lands of Lavernock December: The Ashes of Sker Hotel February: Sewers of the Dead April: Deadly Lover’s Fortress.
