Review: iStorage datAshur PRO (32GB)

Published

on

When it comes to storing or backing up data, there are a wide range of options available on the market. However, there are only a few specialized companies that make USB drives with physical security parameters such as using PIN numbers to lock the drive down to prevent unauthorized access to data. iStorage is one of them and for years, the company has been churning out external storage devices with physical security modules embedded onto them.

The company recently sent me a personalised datAshur PRO for test drive. The datAshur PRO is a USB 3.0 flash drive that comes with a physical keypad on top of it. This keypad is used to input a PIN number to physically lock the USB drive down, thus making your data extra-safe from prying eyes.

The datAshur PRO is available in storage capacities ranging from 4GB to 64GB. We received the 32GB variant for this review. The overall design and build quality of the datAshur PRO is excellent. Clad in a dark metallic blue body, the USB drive is made of rugged aluminium that is rated IP57 for dust and water resistance.

The USB drive also comes with a built-in rechargeable battery, which allows you to enter a 7-15 digit PIN via the on-board keypad before connecting the device to a USB port. All data transferred to the drive is encrypted in real-time with military grade AES-XTS 256-bit hardware encryption. What’s more, the datAshur PRO is also GDPR compliant.

On the keypad, you get two LEDs – one red, which indicates that the USB drive is locked and green that indicates when the USB drive is unlocked. The alphanumeric keypad is used to input the PIN numbers and once the PIN number is entered, you need to press the Key button to lock and unlock the drive. There is also a blue LED that flashes when data is being transferred to and from the device. And there’s a keyring as well, which can be unscrewed to add to your bunch of keys.

The iStorage datAshur PRO works with most operating systems out there and it weighs just 25-gms. On paper, the read speed is 139 MB/s and the write speed is 43 MB/s. During real world tests, we were able to clock 98 MB/s in read speeds and 39 MB/s in write speeds on CrystalDiskMark.

The most important thing to remember after storing your data on the datAshur PRO is the PIN number you used to lock and unlock the device. If you ever forget your PIN, the device will delete the encryption key after 10 failed attempts. The drive also comes with a three-year warranty.

At an asking price of $142 (AED 520 approx.) for a 32GB drive, the iStorage datAshur PRO might seem very expensive. But quality comes at a price and if you want to secure your data with extra fool-proof protection, the iStorage datAshur PRO might be worth all the extra money spent. The iStorage datAshur PRO thus ways away with a Gadget Voize Editors’ Choice award.

Price: AED 520 approx. for a 32GB drive.

Review: ASUS VivoBook 15 OLED (K513 OLED)

Published

on

ASUS recently announced the updated VivoBook 15 with the latest 11th Generation Intel Core processors, ASUS Intelligent Performance Technology, and an OLED display. The company is calling it the VivoBook 15 OLED (K513 OLED) and it comes in stylish colours aimed at the younger crowd.

DESIGN AND DISPLAY
The ASUS VivoBook 15 OLED is made from a combination of aluminium alloy and plastic to create a lightweight but durable design. The laptop is available in Indie Black and Transparent Silver colour options. The laptop also measures less than 20 mm in thickness and weighs only 1.8 kgs.

You also get a Full HD NanoEdge display on the new VivoBook 15 OLED with a narrow bezel on the top and on the sides. The display offers up to an 85% screen-to-body ratio, wide viewing angles at 178-degrees, and very good colour reproduction. The OLED panel used in the display are also TÜV Rheinland-certified for eye care, with low blue-light emissions and flicker-free visuals.

The display measures 15.6-inches and offers a resolution of 1920-by-1080 pixels. You also get a 0.2 ms response time and the OLED panel also supports HDR. If you are a content creator, you will be thrilled to know that the display offers an ultrawide colour gamut of 100% DCI-P3, which is widely used in the motion picture industry and is PANTONE Validated to provide the most precise colour accuracy.

The VivoBook 15 OLED also comes packed with an advanced video tuning system called ASUS Tru2Life Video technology that works like those found in high-end TVs. According to ASUS, Tru2Life Video enhances clarity, colour, and contrast in the video. It intercepts image and video signals being sent to the panel, then analyses every single pixel in every frame to optimise the brightness, contrast, colour and sharpness.

HARDWARE AND I/O PORTS
Under the hood, the VivoBook 15 OLED rocks an 11th Gen Intel Core i5-1135G7 processor, running at a clock speed of 2.40GHz. You also get 8GB of RAM and 512GB of PCIe SSD storage. The laptop also offers space for a 2.5-inch SATA 6Gbps drive, which will allow you to match the 2.5-inch SATA HDD with a maximum 2TB drive or upgrade to a larger capacity in the future.

The graphics is handled by NVIDIA MX350 with 2GB of GDDR5 memory. Wireless connectivity is handled by Intel WiFi 6 with Gig+ (802.11ax) and Bluetooth 5.0. The battery on this laptop is rated at 42Wh. In terms of the I/O ports, you get plenty, such as a USB-C, a USB 3.2 Gen 1 Type-A port, two USB2.0 for data transfers, a full-sized HDMI that supports 4K video output, 3.5mm combo audio jack, and a MicroSD card reader.

Despite its compact form factor, the VivoBook 15 OLED also features a full-sized keyboard with keys that have an almost 19 mm wide pitch. This is a pitch similar to those found on desktop PC keyboards – so it helps with comfortable and accurate typing. The keyboard is also backlit for convenient typing in dark environments and it is also spill-resistant.

The keys of the VivoBook 15 OLED feature a subtle 0.15 mm dish-shaped indentation and 1.4 mm key travel. The dish-shaped indentation on the keys helps to guide fingers, and the long key travel provides for better feedback. The TouchPad meanwhile has a fingerprint sensor for added security. The audio on the VivoBook 15 OLED is powered by Harman Kardon and it has been tuned by ASUS’ very own Golden Ear team.

COLLABORATION FEATURES
By using the Link to MyASUS feature, you can now seamlessly integrate your laptop with your smartphone. This feature is part of the MyASUS software and it allows you to use the full phone functionality on a connected laptop or PC, via mouse, keyboard or touchscreen.

By Screen Mirroring, you can check phone messages, make a call, send message replies or perform other smartphone functions — all via Bluetooth with a linked PC. You can also instantly share files between a linked smartphone and PC by simply tapping the share icon.

You can also easily share a URL from a PC by simply tapping the share icon in the browser and then clicking MyASUS. The link will instantly be sent to the linked mobile device, where it will open automatically. With Link to MyASUS you can seamlessly make or receive phone calls using a linked PC. In addition, you can remotely access files, and use any Android device as an extended screen to drag images, play videos or open documents.

PERFORMANCE
The overall design and build quality is very good. On top, the lid has a textureless metallic finish which I really loved. The OLED HDR screen on this one is brilliant and everything looked sharp and vivid. In terms of performance, the VivoBook 15 OLED holds its ground. Whether it is a day to day computing, productivity applications or tasks such as video editing, it does a very good job.

Gaming is an area where the VivoBook 15 OLED aces – we were able to play games such as Fortnite, GTA V and Watch Dogs, without any issues at all. Battery life is very good, too, at around 10.5 hours on a single charge. For a price of AED 3199, the ASUS VivoBook 15 OLED (K513 OLED) sounds like a very good deal, if you are looking for a dependable laptop on a budget.

Price: AED 3199 (as tested, Intel Core i5-1135G7), AED 4599 (Intel Core i7-1165G7)

Review: Corsair Sabre RGB Pro Wireless Mouse

Published

on

As part of its Champion Series, Corsair announced its latest Sabre RGB Pro Wireless Mouse on the market today. The company sent the new mouse to us in advance for a review. And after using the mouse for a couple of days, we are glad to report that it exceeded our expectations.

The new mouse joins the league of the Sabre RGB Pro, which was launched earlier in 2021. The new Sabre RGB Pro Wireless is very lightweight and packs in an ergonomic design, that offers a competitive advantage to gamers. The mouse itself offers wired and wireless connectivity to laptops and PCS.

In terms of wireless, you get two options – either through Bluetooth or through Slipstream Wireless. The advantage of using Slipstream Wireless is that the technology transmits inputs at sub-1ms speeds, delivering mouse movements and clicks up to two times faster than a conventional gaming mouse, while also ensuring exceptional wireless signal quality throughout your gameplay.

You also get up to 90 hours of battery life that lets you play wire-free for days between charges. In terms of design, the Sabre RGB Pro Wireless features a similar design seen on the wired version. The Wireless variant though has a bit of heft to it when compared with the wired variant.

You get standard left and right-click buttons, with a slight groove in them for comfortably holding two fingers. You also get a bit of texture to the material on both the left and right-click that keeps your fingers from slipping. Forward and back buttons flank the left side of the mouse, and there is a DPI quick-select button just below the scroll wheel.

Inside the box, you get the Sabre RGB Pro Wireless mouse, along with the Slipstream Wireless receiver, a USB Type-C charging cable, the quick start guide, the warranty info and the safety instructions. Getting started with the Sabre RGB Pro Wireless is effortless. Connect the Slipstream Wireless connector to your PC or laptop and switch on the mouse in Slipstream mode, and you are good to go.

The mouse weighs just 79-gms – so rapid movements and lightning-quick reflexes are not a problem. The mouse also comes packed with professional-grade gaming mouse elements, such as the first-ever Corsair Marksman optical sensor. The mouse also comes with the highest dpi in any Corsair mouse to date at 26,000-dpi. This makes sure you get very precise movement.

The mouse is also compatible for use with Corsair’s very own iCUE software. With this app, you can customise dynamic RGB backlighting, remap buttons, create macros, and adjust DPI settings. All of these can be stored onto three onboard profiles. On the bottom of the Sabre RGB Pro Wireless, you will find a switch to move between Slipstream (RF), charging/wired, or Bluetooth modes and a button above that to initiate pairing for the latter.

Both types of wireless connections worked without issue during our review. However, while gaming, it’s better to use the dongle and Slipstream, as it delivers lower latency at sub-1ms. The mouse was comfortable overall to hold and use.

During our review, we put the Corsair Sabre RGB Pro Wireless to test with a couple of games including Watch Dogs Legion, GTA V, and Doom Eternal. The mouse was very comfortable, quick to respond, and reliable. The buttons were very comfortable as well to use and the sensor on the mouse was very responsive.

The Corsair Sabre RGB Pro Wireless Mouse comes with an impressive sensor, a very aesthetic and comfortable design, Slipstream Wireless technology, good overall performance, and a 26,000-DPI.

The pricing of AED 429, is a bit steep. However, if you are looking at top-notch performance, with very good connectivity options, the Corsair Sabre RGB Pro Wireless mouse comes across as highly recommended. It thus walks away with the Gadget Voize Editors’ Choice award!

Published

on

Ever since people started working from home, there has been an increased demand for home security solutions such as security cameras. There are many options available on the market, with EZVIZ being one of the brands offering such solutions. The company recently launched its C8C Outdoor Smart IP Security Camera on the market.

The C8C is is an outdoor security camera that captures 1080p HD footage and comes packed with pan and tilt features for 360-degree coverage. In addition, it also offers strobe light, motion and person detection, and colour night vision.

It is also IP65-rated for dust and water protection and it supports microSD card storage up to 256GB. Inside the box, you get the C8C camera along with a bunch of accessories, including the quick start guide with the QR code to link up the camera in the app, a drill template, rawl plugs, and screws to mount the camera, and the power adapter.

Installing and activating the camera is very simple and you wouldn’t require a technician to do it for you. you can either install the camera vertically on a wall or horizontally on the ceiling. Once the camera is installed, you can set it up by connecting it to your network via Ethernet, or you can use the EZVIZ app to set it up via Wi-Fi.

Since the camera does not come with a battery built-in, you would need it to be permanently connected to a power outlet. Through the EZVIZ app, you can either view live footage or recorded videos. You can even click a photo or being recording while viewing the live footage, which is great.

You can even program it to start recording based either on human detection or on any type of movement. The camera comes with six levels of motion sensitivity and you can adjust that through the app. In terms of night vision, you get two modes – the standard infrared (black and white) version and a colour version which is illuminated by a spotlight.

There is also a “smart” mode that chooses infrared as the default setting but will switch automatically to the spotlight mode if a motion is detected. During our testing, both the modes worked really well and we found the app to be very intuitive.

There is also an “Active Defense” mode which uses the spotlight to deter intruders on your property, by blinking the spotlight continuously. What’s missing though, is a two-way audio feature that could be used to speak to people outside your door and listen to them, too.

In order to store the recorded footage, you can either use a microSD card or the EZVIZ cloud storage, which is available on a subscription basis. For recording videos, you have three options, which include full HD recording at a resolution of 1920-by-1080p at 30 frames per second. You also get digital zoom capabilities on the device.

For a price of AED 285, the EZVIZ C8C Outdoor Smart IP Security Camera does a brilliant job of protecting your property from intruders, while you are at home or away.
