Review: Huawei MateBook 13

After receiving rave reviews for the MateBook X Pro, the company was looking to fill up the mid-market gap for awesome laptops. It finally found one, with the Huawei MateBook 13, which was originally announced way back in 2018.
In 2019, the MateBook 13 reached the Middle East shored. This one packs in mobility and performance in one stunning package. One look at it and you will be amazed with the overall design and build quality of the MateBook 13. The body of the Huawei MateBook 13 measures 14.9.mm and weighs around 1.3-kgs.
The chassis of the MateBook 13 is actually a 13-inch version of the 13.9-inch MateBook X Pro. You will find similarities in its aluminum build, smooth matte surfaces, rounded edges and corners. The visual styling of the device is also quite similar when you place them next to each other. There are quite a few differences though – the 13 has narrower edges to the sides of the keyboard and the webcam has been re-positioned.

The 13-inch Huawei MateBook features a 2K Huawei FullView display with a 88 percent screen-to-body ratio. The notebook also features a 3:2 aspect ratio – so content creation and document editing is a blissful experience. Under the hood, the MateBook 13 is powered either by an 8th Generation Intel Core i78565U processor or an 8th Generation Intel Core i5-8265U processor paired with either an Intel UHD Graphics 620 or a 2GB GDDR5 NVIDIA GeForce MX 150 (25watt TDP).

You also get 8GB of RAM and the option to choose between 250GB or 512GB PCIe SSD for storage requirements. In terms of input and output options, the MateBook 13 comes with a 3.5 mm headset and microphone 2-in-1 jack and two USB-C ports – one on the left edge that supports data transfer and charging with the right port supporting data transfer and DisplayPort.
The test unit we received, came with an 8th Generation Intel Core i78565U processor, 8GB of RAM and 2GB GDDR5 NVIDIA GeForce MX 150 (25watt TDP) for graphics. Since the body is thin to accommodate only USB-C ports, you will have to invest separately in a Huawei MateDock 2 ($85 approx.). Once this is plugged into one of the USB-C ports on the device, you will get one USB 3.0 A port, one USB-C port, and HDMI and VGA display connections.
On the front, atop the FullView display, you get a 1MP front camera for your web call sessions. The MateBook 13 also supports Dolby Atmos and comes packed with applications such as Huawei PC Manager, Microsoft Translator, Monitor Manager, Factory Reset, and Eye Comfort Mode.
The Huawei MateBook 13 comes with an integrated fingerprint sensor on the power button which allows you to securely and quickly log into your notebook without having to click on multiple windows and buttons. In addition, the ultra-slim notebook comes with Huawei’s Share 3.0 Touch to Share, which allows you to transfer images and documents from your Huawei laptop to a Huawei smartphone.
The MateBook 13’s large and tactile clickpad offers plenty of space for fingers to glide on and control the device. It was very comfortable typing on the MateBook 13’s keyboard, because Huawei has bettered the travel distance of each key and the size of the keycaps. What’s more, the keyboard is spill-resistant. The clickpad has been optimised for accuracy and it also detects and disregards accidental touches.
Since Huawei employs many power saving mechanisms in the MateBook 13, one single charge of the device offers you around 6 to 8 hours of battery life. The MateBook also accompanies a 65W charger that works on a range of outputs. It also supports fast-charge technology – just charging your device for around 1.5 hours will give you enough juice for the rest of the work day.
While the MateBook 13 is a visual treat, it also surprises in the performance department. To gauge the real world performance of the device, we ran a couple of benchmarks on the device – CineBench R15 and PCMark. In Cinebench, the MateBook 13 was able to score 178 points, which is pretty good compared with laptops in the same price range.
However, we were surprised with the sheer performance it offered in the PCMark tests. It was ranked higher than many of its competitors, may be because of the dedicated graphics. We also did not experience any software or hardware issues during our time with the review unit.
For a price of AED 4499, the Huawei MateBook 13 variant with the 8th Gen Core i7 processor, 8GB RAM, 512 GB SSD, and 2GB NVIDIA GeForce MX150 Graphics Card, is actually for those who get turned off by weak graphics and performance on most Windows ultrabooks out there on the market. The display is excellent, the design and build quality is awesome and the performance is satisfying.
If you are on the market for a slim and light notebook that performs as great as it looks, you should consider the Huawei MateBook 13. The Huawei MateBook 13 walks away with the Gadget Voize Editors’ Choice award.
Price: AED 4499 (8th Gen Core i7 processor, 8GB RAM, 512 GB SSD, and 2GB NVIDIA GeForce MX150 Graphics Card)
