Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra One-Month Review: The Content Creation King

Published

on

The Samsung Galaxy S series has long been a titan in the smartphone arena, consistently pushing boundaries and redefining what a flagship phone can be. The arrival of the Galaxy S24 Ultra has been met with much anticipation, following a string of leaks, rumours, and fervent speculation. But does it live up to the hype, or is it simply an iterative upgrade?

Design
The S24 Ultra retains the S23 Ultra’s iconic boxy design, constructed from luxurious Armor Aluminium and protected by the latest Corning Gorilla Glass iteration, touted to be significantly more scratch and shatter-resistant. While some might yearn for a more drastic design shift, the familiar form factor translates to a comfortable in-hand feel, especially with the flatter screen edges compared to its predecessor.

This flat display also makes it more compatible with screen protectors, a common pain point for curved screen enthusiasts. However, the phone remains a hefty beast, weighing in at a substantial 232 grams.

Display
The S24 Ultra boasts a stunning 6.8-inch QHD+ AMOLED display with a smooth 120Hz refresh rate. You get a resolution of 3120-by-1440 pixels and 16M colour depth. The brilliant display offers vibrant colours, deep blacks, and exceptional brightness, making it ideal for both content consumption and creative pursuits.

The inclusion of LTPO 4.0 technology allows for a truly adaptive refresh rate, dynamically adjusting between 1Hz and 120Hz depending on the content being viewed, optimising battery life without sacrificing smoothness. Bezels are even slimmer this year, further enhancing the immersive viewing experience.

Other Specs
The S24 Ultra packs a punch with the latest Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chipset, a significant upgrade from the Exynos variants found in some regions for previous models. This translates to blazing-fast performance, effortlessly handling demanding tasks and multitasking with ease. Gamers will rejoice at the smooth frame rates and responsiveness, while power users can expect seamless app switching and lag-free productivity.

However, compared with the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra, there seems to be a lack of significant performance improvement in everyday tasks. This might make the upgrade less compelling for those already content with the previous generation. Our review unit also came with 12GB of RAM and 512GB of storage.

Galaxy AI
Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra’s Galaxy AI features are all about enhancing convenience and productivity. Circle to Search is a nifty feature that lets you instantly search the web for anything you see on your screen. Simply draw a circle around an object in a photo, a product on a webpage, or even a landmark on a map, and Galaxy AI will fire up a Google search for it.

If you are struggling with a foreign language text message or website, Live Translate offers all the help you need. Live Translate uses on-device AI to translate conversations and text in real-time, making communication a breeze. Note Assist, meanwhile, is an AI assistant that helps you get the most out of your note-taking. It can automatically summarise lengthy recordings, translate them into text, or even organise your notes with tags and categories.

Generative Edit uses AI to do some photo magic by removing objects, enhancing backgrounds, or even adding a more natural smile to a portrait. And if you are stuck for words while texting, Chat Assist can suggest relevant emojis, and GIFs, and even complete your sentences based on the context of the conversation.

However, these AI features are still evolving and hence, are not always perfect. Accuracy and effectiveness can vary and there’s a learning curve involved in using some of these features effectively. Overall, Galaxy AI features are a welcome addition that can boost your productivity and make using the S24 Ultra more convenient.

Camera
Samsung has long been a leader in mobile photography, and the S24 Ultra continues this legacy. While the core camera system retains a familiar layout – a 200MP main sensor, a 50MP sensor, a 10MP 3x optical zoom lens, and a 12MP ultrawide lens – the devil is in the details. The main sensor boasts improved light sensitivity and autofocus capabilities, resulting in sharper, more detailed photographs even in low-light conditions.

Here are some samples from our tests:

The biggest upgrade comes with the telephoto lens. The S23 Ultra’s 10x optical zoom is replaced with a new 50MP 5x optical zoom lens. While this might seem like a downgrade on paper, Samsung utilises advanced software processing and AI algorithms to achieve near-optical quality at 10x zoom, blurring the lines between traditional zoom capabilities and computational photography. This means you can capture distant subjects without sacrificing image quality.

Videography enthusiasts will appreciate the S24 Ultra’s enhanced video recording capabilities. It boasts 8K recording at a staggering 24fps, alongside improved stabilisation features for smoother footage on the go. This makes it a compelling option for capturing high-resolution cinematic moments.

Battery Life
The S24 Ultra retains the same 5,000mAh battery as its predecessor. When the S24 Ultra was announced, I hoped for a capacity increase. However, after using the phone for a couple of weeks, I can report that the S24 Ultra offers a slightly improved battery life due to the efficiency gains of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chipset and the LTPO 4.0 display technology. The phone also supports 45W fast charging and wireless charging capabilities, ensuring you’re never left stranded with a low battery.

Software
The S24 Ultra comes pre-installed with Android 14, offering a clean and intuitive user experience. Samsung’s One UI 5.1 interface builds upon the foundation of Android 14, providing additional customization options and breezy overall performance.

S-Pen
The S-Pen remains a major selling point of the Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra. The low latency and pressure sensitivity make writing and drawing natural. Integration with note-taking apps and Samsung’s improved handwriting recognition make it a productivity beast.

It’s like having a magic wand for note-taking, sketching, and even editing photos with pinpoint accuracy. If you’re a creative professional or a note-taking fiend, this is your best friend.

Performance
The Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 processor is a powerhouse, handling demanding tasks and games with ease. Multitasking is a breeze, and there’s no sign of lag. The upgraded vapour chamber seems to address heating issues that plagued previous models. You can push the phone harder for longer without worrying about thermal throttling.

Verdict
The S24 Ultra is undeniably expensive – so upgrading from the S23 Ultra might not be a huge leap for some. However, if you are a power user who needs the absolute best performance and camera the S24 Ultra is for you. It’s a phone for artists, designers, and anyone who loves the S-Pen functionality. For productivity champions who crave a phone that can handle anything they throw at it, the S24 Ultra might be their perfect match. The Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra thus walks away with our Editors’ Choice award!

HONOR Launches the new Magic6 Pro

Published

on

Artificial intelligence has become increasingly integrated into our daily lives, and one of the biggest news in 2024 was the launch of the HONOR Magic6 Pro, boasting a suite of AI functionalities. This groundbreaking smartphone brings the power of artificial intelligence directly to users’ fingertips. The AI capabilities of the HONOR Magic6 Pro are designed to provide meaningful enhancements across various aspects of life, with a particular focus on optimizing everyday usage of the phone.

The HONOR Magic6 Pro takes sports photography to the next level with its intelligent AI Falcon Camera. Gone are the blurry action shots as HONOR Magic6 Pro’s “AI Motion Sensing Capture” uses AI to optimize photos and videos for dynamic moments. With a football player about to kick the ball, the AI analyzes the player’s stance, leg position, and overall movement trajectory to anticipate the peak moment of action (the kick itself). By predicting this crucial moment, the camera can adjust settings like shutter speed and focus even before the action unfolds.

While excelling in sports photography, AI Motion Sensing Capture isn’t limited to the athletic arena.  This technology shines in any scenario with fast-moving subjects.  Whether capturing a child’s dance, a playful dog chasing a frisbee, or even the stunning movements of a concert performance. The AI recognizes and adapts to these dynamic scenes, ensuring you capture the essence of the movement with exceptional clarity.

The updated version of HONOR AI Falcon Camera is the AI network trained with over 8 million images which is 28 times larger than the previous generation. A standout feature of the HONOR Magic6 Pro is its ‘Magic Portal’, an AI feature designed around human-centric intent. This innovative capability enables HONOR Magic6 Pro to interpret text messages, images, and user behaviours, then, it predicts and gives better solutions.

For example, you can quickly copy an address and move it to navigation apps with a simple drag from one app to the side of the screen to the other app. Similarly, they can snap a photo and effortlessly drag it to social media apps for instant sharing.

This functionality is particularly advantageous for professionals on the move, as it allows them to swiftly drag notes or images directly into emails and send them without the hassle of copying or saving them first. For those who crave privacy during calls, HONOR’s AI Privacy Call 3.0 on HONOR Magic6 Pro is a game-changer. This innovative technology tackles sound leakage, a common concern in public spaces.

Using a combination of AI and hardware, AI Privacy Call directs sound straight to your ear, which ensures your conversations remain confidential, whether you’re discussing business strategies on a crowded train or planning a surprise party on the bus. In the new version, users can activate the privacy mode from volume level 1 to level 9, which is one level higher than the previous generation.

At the recent MWC 2024 in Barcelona, HONOR unveiled a unique AI strategy that goes beyond the typical approach. Their vision focuses on four key layers of AI integration, offering a more comprehensive user experience.

Layer 1 utilizes platform-level AI to create a seamless ecosystem. HONOR’s MagicRing feature exemplifies this, allowing for effortless connectivity across your devices. Moving beyond basic functionalities, Layer 2 leverages AI to personalize your experience.  HONOR’s MagicOS 8.0 with the industry’s first Intent-based UI analyzes your habits and preferences, customizing your phone’s operation.

The 3rd layer refers to the on-device application of AI, including application-level AI like photo cropping and photo rendering and the 4th layer is hybrid AI, or the synergy between on-device and cloud-based AI, demonstrating cloud-based AI capabilities on smartphones, such as Artificial Intelligence Generated Content (AIGC).

While most manufacturers focus on on-device AI applications (Layer 3) and cloud-based applications (Layer 4), HONOR’s innovative approach prioritizes these first two layers. This creates a more unified and intelligent user experience. HONOR Magic6 Pro is available for pre-order in Black and Epi Green for AED 3999. Upon purchase, consumers will get gifts worth AED 2194 including Smart Ring, HONOR Choice X5 Pro, HONOR Care+ and more. Consumers can get HONOR Magic6 Pro through the HONOR Online Store, Hihonor, Etisalat by e&, Emax, Sharaf DG & Jumbo.
