Review: Asus ZenBook Pro Duo (UX581G)

Published

on

Dual-screen laptops seem to be the talk of the town these days with a couple of laptop vendors attempting to bring out a commercial iteration that works. And Asus seems to be one of the first to introduce their version of a laptop with a dual-screen.

Say “Hello!” to the new Asus ZenBook Pro Duo UX581G, which packs in dual 4K screens. The main display is a 15.6-inches 4K OLED HDR touchscreen, which offers a resolution of 3840-by-2160 pixels. And right below it, where you usually find the keyboard, is the secondary 4K IPS screen which Asus calls ScreenPad Plus.

The UX581G is made for multi-tankers and it does not matter if you are a productivity enthusiast, content creator or avid gamers. The UX581G can handle everything you can throw at it, thanks to its blockbuster specs. Under the hood, the ZenBook Pro Duo runs an overclockable 2.4-GHz Intel Core i9-9980HK processor with 32GB of RAM, a 1TB PCIe SSD, an Intel UHD Graphics 630 GPU and an Nvidia GeForce RTX 2060 GPU with 6GB of VRAM.

The overall design and built quality is something you have come to expect from Asus. The UX581G is built using alluminium and comes in a Celestial Blue colour with the shiny Asus logo on top of the lid. Once you open up the laptop, the specially designed hinge lifts the bottom of the device to let fresh air flow into the device to keep it cool.

With the lid up, you come face to face with a crisp and delicious looking 15.6-inch OLED screen which makes colours pop out. Right below it, as we mentioned before, is where the ScreenPad Plus sits, which offers a resolution fo 3840-by-1100 pixels. This sort of setup is perfect for those who love to multi-task with multiple app windows open.

For instance, if you are a photographer or a videographer, you would slide the timeline, media library and the editing tools onto the ScreenPad Plus, leaving the preview window on the main display. If you are a gamer, you can use the ScreenPad Plus for chat boxes and live-streaming apps.

During the course of our review, we used a wide range of applications such as video editing, photo editing, page layout applications and so on. We were blown away by the sheer amount of workflow improvements and overall performance. Asus probably made the ZenBook Pro Duo with content creators in the mind, so much so, that it went ahead and fine-tuned its 4K OLED panel. The primary screen on the laptop is bright and fills 100% of the Adobe and sRGB colour spaces. So, if you are a content creator, your final file will match the colour adjustments on the screen.

You also get a full-sized keyboard below the ScreenPad Plus, along with a separate trackpad placed right next to it. The trackpad also transforms into a numeric pad with a press of a button. In terms of connectivity options, Asus has had to sacrifice a few to fit the secondary screen onto the device. You get one USB-C/Thunderbolt 3 port, two USB-A ports, and an HDMI port. An SD-card slot, though, is missing.

The overall performance is brilliant, thanks to its beefy specs. On Geekbench 4.3, the laptop scored 27,163 points in the synthetic overall performance test. Rendering edited videos on Vegas Pro felt like a breeze – there were no signs of struggle to render the raw video footage, the added transitions and the motion graphics. Gaming on the UX581G is also effortless.

In terms of battery life, we got around 4 hours worth of normal usage, before the laptop needed recharging. The laptop runs on Windows 10 and is filled with a bit of bloatware, which can be easily uninstalled if not needed.

The stand out feature of the device is, of course, the ScreenPad Plus which is amazing and easy to use, without any sort of learning curve involved. For a price starting at AED 13,999, the Asus ZenBook Pro Duo UX581G comes with awesome 4K dual screens, excellent specs, very good performance, an active stylus, an Alexa light bar that lights up when you speak to Alexa, an IR camera that works in the dark, and Harmon Kardon speakers.

Dual-screen laptops aren’t a new concept. However, Asus is probably one of the first to do justice to the concept by bringing out the ZenBook Pro Duo UX581G. The second display on the device is quite useful once you get used to it. The RTX 2060 GPU coupled with excellent specs makes it a worthy alternative to Apple.

Review: ROG FLOW X16 (GV601)

Published

on

ROG launched its Flow series gaming laptops that offered performance, even though they weighed in at just under 1.3 kgs. With the new ROG FLOW X16, the company has now introduced a redesigned 16-inch ultraslim device with XG Mobile compatibility – all packed into an ultra-compact 15-inch chassis.

Measuring just 19.4 mm in thickness, the FLOW X16 is available either in Off Black or Eclipse Gray colour options. ASUS has also thrown in a “gravity wave” textured design onto the entire ultra-slim magnesium alloy chassis to give the FLOW X16 a unique style.

As you open up the laptop’s lid, you come face to face with a 16-inch mini LED display that offers an aspect ratio of 16:10 and a contrast ratio of 100,000:1. The display also offers WQXGA resolution of 2560-by-1600 pixels, a 165Hz refresh rate, a 3ms response time, support for 100% DCI-P3 colours and a peak brightness of 1100 nits.

On top of the display is where you will find a 3DNR HD IR web camera that supports Windows Hello. In terms of I/O ports, you get a boatload. There is one ROG XG Mobile interface and Type-C support with USB3.2 Gen2, one DisplayPort 1.4 with Gsync/VR and power delivery support, one USB 3.2 Type-C (DisplayPort 1.4 + PD support), two Type-A USB3.2 Gen2, one HDMI 2.0b, one Micro SD card reader slot, and a 3.5mm audio combo jack.

Under the hood, the FLOW X16 is equipped with up to an AMD Rembrandt 6900HS processor and up to an Nvidia Geforce RTX3070 Ti GPU. You also get up to 32GB of high-efficiency DDR5 memory running at 4800MHz, and two PCIe Gen 4×4 SSD slots. Our review unit came with 16GB of RAM and 1TB of storage space.

Wireless connectivity is supported by Wi-Fi 6E 802.11ax and Bluetooth v5.2. The ROG Flow X16 builds upon the company’s years of Intelligent Cooling experience. Thermal Grizzly liquid metal thermal compound, a unique Tri-fan thermal module, and the ability to stay completely silent with 0dB Ambient Cooling Technology keep the Flow X16 cool even under demanding circumstances.

Typing on the keyboard is also a satisfying experience. With N-key rollover, a 1.7mm travel distance, and single-zone RGB with Aura Sync support, the keyboard has the same premium feature set as our other ROG laptops. When used in tablet mode, the 16-inches touchscreen display allows for effortless enjoyment of your favourite mobile and touch-compatible games.

For supported games, the X16 also connects seamlessly with wireless controllers for a whole new take on ultra-portable gaming. You can pair up to four controllers and put the X16 in tent mode to benefit from it. The FLOW X16 also offers virtual 5.1.2-channel surround sound, which is powered by Dolby Atmos.

In order to test out the real-world performance of the ROG FLOW X16, we ran a bunch of benchmarks on it. In 3DMark 13 – Fire Strike, we clocked 21011 points, with graphics standing at 22109 points and physics standing at 25091. In PCMark 10, we got an overall score of 6873 points. In GeekBench 5.4.3, we got a 64-bit single-core score of 1513, and a 64-bit multi-core score of 9011. These are some excellent results for a thin-and-light notebook.

The ROG FLOW X16 is a well-designed laptop that offers a convertible form factor with a touchscreen and pen support. You also get a good selection of ports, powerful specs, and good battery life, thanks to its 90Wh battery. If you are looking for a performance-based convertible, the ROG FLOW X16 could match your requirements.

ASUS Republic of Gamers Announces ROG Flow X16

Published

on

ASUS Republic of Gamers (ROG) today announced the brand new ROG Flow X16 gaming laptop. This 16-inch thin and light laptop is powered by an AMD Ryzen 9 6900HS processor and an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3070 Ti Laptop GPU, with support for the XG Mobile family of external GPUs, all while weighing just 2.1 kg and packed into a 15-inch chassis.

The Flow X16 also features the flagship Nebula HDR Display, a dazzling 165 Hz Mini LED panel with 1100 nits of peak brightness, 512 local dimming zones, and 100% DCI-P3 coverage. These premium parts are complemented by the all-new cooling system with Frost Force Technology and a Pulsar Heatsink, featuring three fans and a high-density heatsink to keep performance high and temperatures low.

The Flow X16 is the third addition to the ROG Flow family, and the most powerful yet. Featuring an AMD Ryzen 9 6900HS processor and an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3070 Ti Laptop GPU with a MUX Switch, the Flow X16 can render frames in a game much faster than its 19.4 mm thick chassis would imply. With the RTX 3070 Ti operating at a maximum TGP of 125 watts with Dynamic Boost, the Flow X16 redefines what ultraportable gaming and content creation look like.

ROG has not sacrificed usability and upgradeability for this thin and light form factor. Both the blazing-fast DDR5 4800 MHz memory and PCIe 4.0 SSD are accessible and upgradeable. The Flow X16 supports 32 GB of RAM, and both SO-DIMMs are easily accessible for future upgrades. Featuring 1 TB of SSD storage, the Flow X16 also has a second open M.2 slot, making it painless to drop in more storage for a scratch disk or larger game library.

As a member of the Flow family, portability and versatility were instrumental in the design of the Flow X16. Featuring a full 360° hinge, gamers can transform their machine from a traditional clamshell laptop to utilize tent mode, maximizing airflow when using an external keyboard or gamepad. Alternatively, they can flip the display back into full tablet mode to utilize touch functionality. No matter where, how, or what they play, the Flow X16 can transform itself to match their needs.

This versatility also includes full support for the XG Mobile family of external GPUs. These compact enclosures house laptop variants of the highest-performing AMD and NVIDIA discrete graphics chips while being portable enough to comfortably carry in a backpack. These unique external GPUs also act as an I/O expansion hub, housing dedicated Ethernet, USB Type-A, DisplayPort, HMDI 2.1 ports, and an SD card reader.

The Nebula HDR Display on the Flow X16 meets all of those requirements while pushing the boundary of stunning HDR performance. This QHD, 16:10, 165 Hz Nebula HDR display uses Mini LEDs that are capable of 1100 nits of peak brightness. Nebula HDR is VESA DisplayHDR 1000 certified, boasting 512 dimming zones for excellent contrast and a truly out-of-this-world HDR experience.

Powered by AUO’s AmLED technology and the ROG Nebula HDR Engine, Nebula HDR uses incredibly precise backlights for local dimming that produces stunning contrast. This software combination of adaptive image processing paired with adaptive dimming and boosting of the backlight helps deliver incredibly accurate imagery with minimal haloing. Whether gamers choose to utilize this incredible HDR panel for gameplay or consume their favorite content comfortably in tablet mode, this machine is the ultimate choice for anyone’s on-the-go HDR needs.

Packing all of the Flow X16’s gaming and multitasking power in a chassis less than 20 mm thick was no easy feat. The Flow X16 features Thermal Grizzly liquid metal on the CPU and brand-new Frost Force Technology, which features two fans that direct airflow through precisely calculated cutouts and towards crucial internal components. A third auxiliary fan also assists with moving heat from the GPU directly to the new Pulsar Heatsink that covers the entire rear of the machine. Designed with ultra-dense fins just 0.1 mm thick, the Flow X16 sports a total of 110,902 mm of heatsink surface area.

The addition of an auxiliary third fan keeps GPU temperatures 7°C cooler than traditional solutions, which allows the Flow X16 to maintain high framerates during sustained gaming sessions in any of its four modes. For gamers needing the ultimate in portability without sacrificing power, the Flow X16 has arrived. ROG Flow X16 will be available from 9th September 2022 in Virgin Megastore, Sharaf DG, Jumbo, Emax, Amazon, HyperX , Computronic, and ASUS eshop. The price starts from AED 10,999.
