Insta360 Launches the ONE R Action Cam Co-Engineered with Leica

Published

on

Insta360 today announced ONE R, an adaptive action cam whose unique interchangeable-lens design enables 360-degree capture, standard 4K wide-angle capture, and use of a groundbreaking 5.3K 1-inch sensor — all with a single device. The concept is simple — one battery, one processor and a selection of quick-swapping lens Mods.

In an instant, ONE R transforms from a dual-lens 360 shooter to a standard action cam. ONE R currently offers three ways to shoot with three available lens Mods — the Dual-Lens 360 Mod, the 4K Wide-Angle Mod and the 1-Inch Wide Angle Mod co-engineered with Leica.

The 1-Inch Wide Angle Mod achieves the best performance ever in an action camera, combining a 1-inch sensor with the legendary optical expertise of Leica and 5.3K resolution — in a compact, rugged body backed by Insta360’s signature FlowState stabilization.

The ONE R is designed to give creators, athletes, and adventurers a single tool that can adapt to any shoot. In terms of creative freedom, nothing beats a dual-lens 360 camera. It unlocks the ability to reframe shots after the fact, ensures that users never miss the action, and enables unique techniques such as drone-like aerial angles. But for scenes in which action is concentrated in one direction, a reframed shot from a 360 camera still doesn’t achieve the same level of quality and resolution as a specialized single-lens shooter.

These two camera formats have unique strengths and tradeoffs — just as telephoto and wide-angle setups on an SLR camera have equal but opposite strengths. The only way to take advantage of both formats is with an easy, efficient way to switch from one to the other on the fly. ONE R is just that. ONE R redefines what’s possible with an action cam. Each of its three available Mods unlock breakthrough imaging and quality.

Dual-Lens 360 Mod: This Mod supports 5.7K capture on two lenses that cover every direction at once. It enables a real-time 360-degree preview on ONE R’s touchscreen, while innovations like Color Plus, HDR video and Night Shot achieve the best color accuracy and low-light performance in any consumer 360 camera.

4K Wide Angle Mod: Ready for 4K@60fps, this Mod captures crisp, vibrant, stabilized action and supports up to 8x slow-mo. Its reversible design lets you flip the touchscreen from back to front in a snap — perfect for getting real-time feedback when filming yourself.

1-Inch Wide Angle Mod co-engineered with Leica: This Mod achieves a level of quality never before seen in an action cam. The 1-Inch Wide Angle Mod uses a best-in-class 1-inch sensor to capture brilliant 5.3K video and 19MP photos even in complex lighting conditions. Premium performance in a device that’s ready to go anywhere — the 1-Inch Wide Angle Mod is a game-changer.

Leica worked closely with Insta360 on the optical engineering and industrial design of the 1-Inch Wide Angle Mod, and contributed its unmatched expertise in image quality and color reproduction.

The ONE R uses a fully upgraded FlowState stabilization algorithm to achieve gimbal-like stabilization whether you’re shooting in 360 or with a standard wide-angle. Using a smart scene-detection algorithm, ONE R outclasses the competition with stabilization that holds steady even in low-light scenes.

The ONE R is also IPX8 waterproof to depths of 5 meters (16.4 feet) straight out of the box. For those who want to go deeper, a Dive Case enables descents of up to 60 meters (197 feet). Voice control, meanwhile, lets you control ONE R with a few simple commands. If ONE R is mounted on a helmet or out of reach, just give it a shot.

The best thing about shooting 360 videos is that you capture an infinite number of possible angles and edits. The worst thing about shooting 360 videos is that you capture an infinite number of possible angles and edits. If only there were some kind of artificial intelligence that could analyze a scene in every direction at once to find the most interesting moments and angles.

Enter Auto Frame. Insta360 has developed its own computer vision algorithm to identify the best parts of any 360 video and recommend them to creators. There’s still plenty of choices, but the ONE R app’s Auto Frame feature helps you quickly narrow down the shots worth considering and does the reframing for you.

AI-powered computer vision also enables ONE R’s mind-blowing tracking capabilities. When editing 360 videos, creators can simply select a subject to follow with a tap. The ONE R app will automatically keep it locked in the center-frame. Even if a subject is obscured by an obstacle, ONE R’s algorithm will remember it and start tracking again as soon as it reappears.

And if you don’t want to wait for post-production to choose your subject, you can also use Deep Track in real-time. ONE R’s unique “Point to Track” feature lets you lock onto a subject with the voice prompt “Mark that!”. The next time you connect to your camera, you’ll get an automatically reframed shot that follows your chosen subject — it’s like having a cameraman with you wherever you go.

ONE R brings back Insta360’s endlessly fun and versatile Invisible Selfie Stick feature. Easily capture aerial angles and video-game-style third-person views by making your camera grip invisible. Invisible Selfie Stick is only supported when using the Dual-Lens 360 Mod.

ONE R offers a range of both hardware and software upgrades to achieve best-in-class low-light performance. New Night Shot mode captures low-light photos that pop, while automatic de-noising preserves detail in the low-light video. ONE R also supports HDR modes for both photos and videos, and creators can take advantage of Color Plus to do an automatic, one-touch color grade that brings out brighter, more vibrant hues.

When it comes to color reproduction and low-light performance, the 1-Inch Wide Angle Mod co-engineered with Leica is in a class of its own. Its 1-Inch sensor brings out highlights and shadows in vivid detail. Vloggers will be tempted to leave the rest of their kit at home. Every ONE R build comes standard with two onboard mics and an automatic wind-reduction algorithm that achieves great sound straight off the camera.

However, its USB Type-C port and top-mounted Accessory Shoe also allow for easy third-party 3.5mm mic connection. The ONE R app comes with a range of new editing features designed to help creators take advantage of all its capabilities. The TimeShift hyperlapse effect popularized by ONE X can now be completed with a couple of taps, and a new pose-detection algorithm lets creators instantly identify and extract every frame of a clip in which they strike a similar posture — enabling mind-bending stop-motion effects that used to take hours of work.

New Starlapse mode automatically calibrates exposure settings to capture stunning time-lapse of the night sky — creators just pick a time and a place and hit record. The ONE series’ signature Bullet Time effect has also been upgraded with a smart horizon-leveling algorithm. FlashCut is the ONE R app’s content-aware editing algorithm. First, it finds shots based on a theme set by the creator — like food, travel or pets. Then it combines them on beat into a stylish edit. FlashCut can filter and combine footage captured by any ONE R build — 360 or standard.

ONE R doesn’t stop at three Mods. Its unique design enables a huge range of efficient add-ons and upgrades. The standard Battery Base can be swapped for a double-size Boosted Battery Base for extended shooting. Meanwhile, Insta360 today also announced the groundbreaking Insta360 ONE R Aerial Edition, which offers a specialized mounting system to make supported drones completely invisible and captures an unobstructed, airborne 360-degree view.

ONE R is all about choice. Creators can purchase exactly the combination of gear that suits their needs. However, Insta360 also offers a range of prepackaged Editions that give creators everything they need to get started with some of the most powerful combinations of Mods.

Insta360 ONE R Twin Edition brings together two great ways to shoot — the Dual-Lens 360 Mod and 4K Wide Angle Mod — in one convenient package for $479.99; Insta360 ONE R 1-Inch Edition comes standard with the premium 1-Inch Wide Angle Mod co-engineered with Leica and retails for $549.99; and Insta360 ONE R 4K Edition offers creators all they need to enjoy the versatile 4K Wide Angle Mod for $299.99.

Insta360 Launches the new ONE RS

Published

on

Insta360 has announced the new ONE RS, an interchangeable lens action camera that offers creators all-in-one versatility, without compromises. Using a three-part design—one battery, one processor, and three quick-swapping lenses—ONE RS effortlessly transforms from a traditional action cam to a creative 360 cam. A new high-performance 4K Boost Lens with a 1/2″ 48MP image sensor now offers stunningly detailed wide-angle videos and photos, while a powerful Core offers better than ever in-camera stabilization, crisper audio, and more.

As a modular camera system, the new lens and Core are cross-compatible with the preceding ONE R generation as well, enabling creators to upgrade their camera at their own pace. The previously-released 5.7K 360 Lens unlocks endless creative possibilities with the Invisible Selfie Stick effect and 360 reframing. Meanwhile, the 5.3K 1-Inch Wide Angle Lens co-engineered with Leica continues to offer unparalleled image quality thanks to its 1-inch sensor. No matter which lens is installed, the action camera is tough, rugged, and waterproof to 16 feet (5m).

The new 4K Boost Lens is the go-to choice for athletes, adventurers and creators to capture vibrant and detailed action shots. With an upgraded 1/2″ 48MP image sensor, the new lens shoots sharp 4K 60fps videos and best-in-class 48MP stills. Two innovative new modes are also available on the 4K Boost Lens. The first mode is Active HDR, a game-changer for action sports. While HDR modes on other action cameras are limited to stationary use due to ghosting challenges, Active HDR is specifically designed for action. Active HDR keeps your video stabilized as you move, minimizing ghosting and revealing details in the highlights and shadows that other action cameras miss.

The second cutting-edge option is 6K Widescreen mode. Taking full advantage of the 48MP sensor, this mode outputs ultra-high-resolution 6K footage with a classic 2.35:1 ratio for a cinematic widescreen look. With its interchangeable lens design, ONE RS ensures that creators always have the best tool for the job. While the 4K Boost Lens is ideal for zeroing in on details, the 360 Lens is perfect for when you want to focus on the action, not on your camera.

Whether you’re motorcycling, skiing or just kicking back with friends, getting creative shots is effortless with the 360 Lens. All you have to do is hit record and let the camera capture everything in 5.7K 360 degrees. Later, you can choose your favorite angle (or multiple angles) and export it as a flat video that can be shared just like any other video. The 360 Lens also enables creators to capture impossible third-person views of themselves as they’re in the moment. Thanks to the camera’s dual-lens design, the selfie stick is automatically stitched out of the final footage, resulting in incredible video-game-like angles.

With the powerful new ONE RS Core, Insta360’s proprietary FlowState Stabilization is now delivered through the camera hardware for smoother-than-ever videos. With enhanced stabilization applied in camera, creators can now instantly share smooth wide-angle content to social media without having to process it in the Insta360 app. No matter how much the camera is rotated during the action, 360 horizon leveling also ensures your video always stays magically level. Toggle a switch in the Insta360 app or desktop software with footage shot on any of the three lenses and watch the footage instantly level out.

With a rugged design and IPX8 waterproofing to 16 feet, ONE RS is built to go anywhere you go. Even at the height of the action, high-performance connectors ensure a reliable connection between the mods, while a number of hardware upgrades make operating the camera seamless.

Upgrades to the new Core include:

  • An additional mic, for crisp and true-to-life audio
  • 50% faster WiFi, for easy mobile file transfers
  • An Instant Zoom function, for digitally zooming in up to 2.7x while recording videos
  • A Quick menu, for easy access to preset shooting modes

The Mounting Bracket has also been redesigned, with a quick-release mechanism for switching lenses on the fly, a windproof mic cover, and a heat-dissipating panel to ensure the camera stays cool while recording. With the Quick Reader accessory, there’s no need to transfer files over WiFi, saving time, the camera’s battery, and mobile storage space. Simply plug it into ONE RS to save files to the SD card and then plug it into your phone to start editing. Editing epic shots is easier than ever with the Insta360 app’s powerful editing suite, packed with AI-powered features.

For 360 footage, finding the best angle is easy with Snap Wizard—simply move your phone or swipe the screen to change the angle of the camera and export your desired footage instantly. For fun effects like cloning or stop motion, Shot Lab is constantly being updated with new AI editing effects. One exciting new effect is Cinelapse, which adds cinematic transitions between clips to create a next-level hyperlapse.

For wide-angle footage, FlashCut uses AI to find the best moments in your clips and edit them together on beat to music. You can choose from several different editing themes, from action highlight reels to travel vlogs. For creators who prefer editing on desktop, the free Insta360 Studio software is also available for Mac and Windows, as well as free plugins for Adobe Premiere Pro and Final Cut Pro.

ONE RS isn’t just an action camera. It also doubles as a 360-degree live streaming camera using the Insta360 app, as well as a webcam when connected to a computer. Thanks to its interchangeable lens design, ONE RS is all but future-proof, with exciting potential for future hardware upgrades and expanded functionality.

As a modular system, several purchasing options are available. The Twin Edition includes the powerful combination of the 4K Boost Lens and 360 Lens, and offers the best value at $549.99. For users looking to upgrade their wide-angle action cam setup, the 4K Edition retails for $299.99, while the 1-Inch Edition retails for $549.99. The Core, battery and Mounting Bracket are also available to purchase as a bundle. Support for the 4K Boost Lens with the ONE R Core will come in a post-launch firmware update.

Video Review: Insta360 Go 2

Published

on

The Insta360 GO 2 is one of the smallest action cameras you can buy today. The camera allows you to shoot outstanding POV videos, and thanks to its range of sturdy magnetic mounts, you can literally stick it anywhere and start shooting content.

The camera allows you to shoot content at a resolution of 1440p at a frame rate of 50fps. It is also waterproof and supports various shooting modes such as Interval Shooting, Static Timelapse, Hyperlapse, Slow Motion, and so on.

Inside the box, you get the Insta360 GO 2 and a bunch of mounting accessories. Now this includes the magnetic pendant, a clip that mounts to a baseball cap, and a swivel mount with an adhesive bottom.

The magnetic pendant is meant to be worn under your shirt. It’s strong enough to keep the camera pretty secure, and it allows you to take some nice POV shots with it. You also get the charging case which also doubles up as a remote control for the camera.

Now, this charging case also doubles up as a stand for the camera and it can also be mounted onto a tripod. In order to set up the camera, you need to install the Insta360 app, which is available for both Android and iOS devices. Once installed follow the instructions in the quick start guide to pair it to the app and activate the camera.

The charging case when opened works as a remote control that lets you access all sorts of features of the camera and the settings menu. There are only two buttons on the remote control – one is a record button which also doubles up as the select button. The other button next to it can be used to toggle between various menu options.

There’s only one button on the Insta360 Go 2 and it’s on the front. When the camera is off, a single press of the button will cause it to wake up and start recording video, while a double-press will snap a photo.

With the camera on, a single press starts motion-stabilised video, while pressing twice will start recording a hyper-lapse video. A small LED just below the camera’s lens lights up when the Go 2 is capturing video.

The Go 2 comes with 32GB onboard storage and there is no memory card slot to record to external memory. Shooting modes include Video, Photo, Pro Video, HDR Video, TimeShift, Timelapse, Nightlapse, and Slow Motion. In the Pro Video mode, you can record 1440p video at 30 and 50fps, and in Slow Motion, you can record FullHD at 120fps.

The Go 2 comes with Insta360’s FlowState image stabilisation and horizon levelling technology. The camera is also waterproof to up to 4m underwater. There’s also a lens guard to protect the GO 2’s glass from scratches. You can also unscrew the glass and replace it, or swap for an ND filter.

In terms of performance, the Insta360 Go 2 is pretty good. The quality of its 2K video isn’t the best you can find on the market, however, it’s pretty good for a camera with a tiny sensor. Overall, the GO 2 produces very good colours and nice exposures, even in challenging conditions.

The Insta360 Go 2 is now available for a price of AED 1200 and it is probably one of the few action cameras out there that offers something for everyone.

Its tiny size and range of mounts make it perfect for POV videos and content creators. Its simplicity and ease of use make it ideal for those who would want something they can pick up and shoot immediately.

Price: AED 1200
