Review: Asus ROG Theta 7.1 and ROG Throne Qi

Published

on

When it comes to gaming, headsets matter a lot. Especially when playing multi-player co-op games, communicating with your teammates can be a matter of on-screen life and death. Asus ROG’s Theta 7.1 is one of the company’s gaming headsets.

The awesomeness starts as soon as you start unboxing the device from its packaging, which comes clad in Red and Black. The packaging includes the outer cover and the main box. As you slide the outer cover, you reveal the main box, which opens on the both the edges to reveal the ROG Theta 7.1.

Inside the box, you get a removable microphone, an extension adapter from USB-C to USB-A, an additional pair of ROG Hybrid interchangeable ear pads and some paperwork which includes the user manual and a warranty card. The extension cord adapter is an unbraided variety and is 1-meter in length.

The Type-A plug and Type-C connector on the extension cord adapter are all gold-plated, including the 3.5 mm microphone plug. The microphone also comes with an LED indicator. In terms of design and build quality, the ROG Theta 7.1 screams coolness.

The gaming headset is a bit larger than most gaming headsets available on the market and comes with an ROG logo that supports RGB lighting. The ear cups are more oval shaped than round. You also have the aluminium alloy frame which connects the ear cups to the headband.

And as you wear the headset, you cannot help but feel how snugly it fits. The headset does not get heated up on your ears during extended gaming sessions. And the foam cushioning makes for a brilliant and comfortable experience. The headband comes with a plush fabric cushion along the plastic plates, indicating the left and right orientation.

You can adjust the headband to fit it on your head. This reveals a metallic support band with ROG’s signature design cue. You also have a Republic of Gamers branding on the top which blends in with the headband. The headset also comes with both a sound mode switcher and a volume rocker.

The volume rocker itself doubles up as a microphone mute switch. Simply roll it up and down to adjust volume, and press it to mute or unmute the microphone. Since the ROG Theta 7.1 uses a USB-C connector, you need to make sure your laptop, PC or your device has this port. Once the headset is connected to your PC, you can use the ROG Armoury Crate to customise the RGB lighting via the AURA Sync section.

The ROG Theta 7.1 comes packed with eight Essence speakers with a neodymium magnet, four in each bowl. The first, frontal, has a diameter of 40 mm, and the remaining three (central, rear and side) has a diameter of 30 mm. There is no dedicated subwoofer – instead, it is virtual.

The audio quality offered by the ROG Theta 7.1 is quite good. It’s got deeper bass, and very good mids and highs. This makes for better sounding voices in both games and in videos. Once you switch over to surround sound using the sound mode switcher, you can clearly feel the change in the audio detailing. The overall gaming experience gets a bit better, especially first-person shooters and co-ops.

Along with the ROG Theta 7.1, Asus also sent us the ROG Throne Qi, which is a gaming headset stand with integrated 10W wireless Qi charging. It also offers additional connectivity with a 3.5mm headphone and dual USB 3.1 Type a (1.5a) ports to charge and connect your devices.

You also get an integrated ESS 9118 digital-to-analog converter (DAC) and amplifier, which provides an instant upgrade to 7.1 surround sound for any 3.5mm headset. The Throne Qi comes with an optimised ARC design with anti-slip rubber pad that provides a stable platform to hold your headset and protect from shakes or bumps. And the Asus Aura Sync RGB lighting feature offers excellent RGB LED effects.

The ROG Throne Qi is priced at $175 (AED 650 approx.), which might seem to be on the higher side. But remember, it is a headset stand with a Qi wireless charger, comes with a built in DAC, and offers RGB LED effects through Asus Aura Sync. And that makes it ;possibly worthwhile for those who appreciate innovative and quality products.

For a price of $350 (AED 1300 approx.), the ROG Theta 7.1 isn’t a cheap headset. But, as they say, quality comes at a price. The ASUS ROG Theta 7.1 is a headset made exclusively for games. And if you are a gamer and appreciate quality gaming products, then the Asus ROG Theta 7.1 is definitely for you. The Asus ROG Theta 7.1 thus walks away with the Gadget Voize Editors’ Choice Award.

Price: $350 for the ROG Theta 7.1 and $175 for the ROG Throne Qi

Final Rating:
Asus ROG Theta 7.1:
8.5/10
Asus ROG Throne Qi: 8/10

HUAWEI Intros Open-Ear FreeArc Earbuds

Published

on

Huawei has launched its latest audio innovation, the HUAWEI FreeArc, further solidifying its leadership in the fast-growing open-ear wearables segment. Designed for comfort and situational awareness, the FreeArc offers a secure, pressure-free fit without blocking the ear canal—catering to users who demand high-quality audio without sacrificing awareness of their surroundings.

Open-ear earbuds, which sit outside the ear rather than inside it, have surged in popularity due to their comfort and safety benefits, particularly for fitness enthusiasts, commuters, and professionals. According to Canalys, global shipments of open-ear headphones reached nearly 8 million units in Q3 2024—a staggering fourfold increase from the same period last year.

Huawei has been at the forefront of this shift. The company ranked first in global wearable shipments for the first three quarters of 2024 (IDC), backed by its extensive audio R&D network—including seven research centers, over 1,000 audio specialists, and more than 250 patents. Its first open-ear model, the HUAWEI FreeClip, has already surpassed 2 million units shipped worldwide, demonstrating strong consumer demand for innovative wearable audio solutions.

Huawei’s journey in open-ear wearables began in 2019 with its collaboration with Gentle Monster on HUAWEI Eyewear, blending fashion with cutting-edge audio technology. The FreeClip, launched later, marked Huawei’s entry into the Open Wireless Stereo (OWS) category, featuring a flexible C-bridge design for a lightweight, breathable fit.

Now, the FreeArc takes this legacy further as Huawei’s first open-ear earbuds with earhooks. Built with a nickel-titanium alloy frame, the new model enhances stability and adaptability for a wider range of ear shapes while retaining the signature C-bridge comfort. Engineered for active lifestyles, the FreeArc boasts an IP57 rating for dust and water resistance, making it ideal for workouts, travel, and daily commutes. Key enhancements include:

  1. High-sensitivity drivers for crisp, balanced sound
  2. Dual-Resonator Antenna for stronger connectivity
  3. Wind-resistant microphones for clearer calls in outdoor environments

With the FreeArc, Huawei continues to refine its open-ear offerings, combining ergonomic design with practical durability.

Apple’s Beats Unveils Powerbeats Pro 2 with Heart-Rate Monitoring

Published

on

Apple Inc.’s Beats division has unveiled the long-awaited Powerbeats Pro 2, which features noise cancellation, a heart-rate monitor, and a revamped design aimed at athletes. This new model incorporates capabilities seen in Apple’s AirPods, such as transparency mode for better external noise awareness and the H2 chip for enhanced sound quality. Additionally, it offers improved spatial audio for a 3D listening experience and comes with a smaller, wireless charging case.

The heart-rate monitor is a notable first for Apple-designed earbuds, expanding the company’s health-related features, and utilizes technology found in the Apple Watch. Despite a slow holiday season for Apple’s wearables business—with sales in the division falling nearly 2% to about $11.8 billion—the introduction of these new earbuds is anticipated to drive interest and sales.

Priced at $250, the same as the previous model, the new Powerbeats Pro 2 will be available in black, orange, purple, and a color called quicksand. This price point matches the AirPods Pro 2, although the Powerbeats may be more appealing to athletes due to their secure ear hooks.

Apple Vice President Oliver Schusser, who oversees Beats as well as the company’s sports, TV+, and music initiatives, hailed the new Powerbeats as “the most impressive product in Beats’ history.” Acquired by Apple in 2014 for $3 billion, Beats remains the company’s largest acquisition to date.

The heart-rate monitor will be compatible with fitness apps like Peloton, Nike Run Club, Ladder, and Slopes, with data integration into the Apple Health app. The earbuds will also be compatible with Android devices. Apple is reportedly working on AirPods with heart-rate monitoring, though they are still many months away from release.

In terms of battery life, the Powerbeats Pro 2 holds an advantage over AirPods, with 10 hours of usage on their own and 45 hours with the charging case, compared to six hours for AirPods alone and up to 30 hours with the case. However, AirPods continue to offer unique features, such as a new hearing aid functionality.
