What Do We Know So Far About HarmonyOS, Huawei’s Open-Source Operating System?
With Huawei about to make a major announcement about the future of HarmonyOS, this seems like a good time to take stock of the story so far.
On August 9, 2019, Huawei announced that it had been working on a new operating system called HarmonyOS. During his speech, Richard Yu, CEO of Huawei’s Consumer BG, spoke about Huawei’s intention to launch several products running this new OS, and promised that HarmonyOS would be open source.
HarmonyOS will support different types of devices, ranging from household appliances such as range hoods, air conditioners, and water purifiers, to wearable devices, mobile phones, smart cars, computers, and TVs. After more than a year’s iterative update to the OS by Huawei R&D department, the first product running on HarmonyOS 2.0 — the Huawei Vision TV — was launched on September 10, 2020. Two months after that, Huawei made a beta version for phones available to developers.
In terms of the UI, Android users will likely find HarmonyOS familiar and intuitive. They will be able to do the things they are accustomed to doing with their phones in more or less the same way they always have. However, what makes HarmonyOS interesting is the new capabilities it will bring.
With the rapid development of 5G and AI technologies, the Internet of Everything (IoE) is beginning to take shape. However, the IoT market still suffers from fragmentation. Huawei is presenting HarmonyOS as an operating system for the IoE. It allows different devices to connect and share their capabilities with each other.
We know that the moment it appears on phones, HarmonyOS will already be compatible with millions of existing apps. Developers have two major incentives to adapt their Android apps for HarmonyOS. First and foremost, Huawei already has a user base of hundreds of millions of mobile phone users, and many of those users will be able to upgrade to HarmonyOS on their current Huawei phone.
If Huawei’s user base alone is not enough to attract developers, Huawei has also invested $1 billion in Shining Star, a program that offers financial incentives to developers who adapt their apps to run on HarmonyOS. Both the hardware and software end of HarmonyOS is characterized by openness.
In addition to opening up the source code to app developers, Huawei has also invited third-party manufacturers to create HarmonyOS-compatible hardware. Currently, more than 300 app developers and more than 20 hardware vendors have participated in the construction of HarmonyOS ecosystem.
In a recent interview, Wang Chenglu, President of Software Engineering Dept of Huawei Consumer Business Group, said that he expected HarmonyOS to be running on 300 million individual devices in 2021. In a different interview in December 2020, he spoke about how Huawei is trying to reduce the workload for developers who choose to adapt their apps for HarmonyOS.
“Developers often spend a lot of time and effort on developing apps for devices in different sizes and different interaction modes. HarmonyOS, however, encapsulates complex operations of different devices into APIs, which developers can use directly. This means developers only need to focus on app development, since UI adaptation will be done automatically by HarmonyOS,” Chenglu added.
Huawei says that HarmonyOS has received strong support from ecosystem partners and developers. “In the future, more ecosystem partners will apply HarmonyOS to ever-increasing variety of devices and innovative apps, making Huawei’s vision of a Seamless AI Life a reality,” the company says.
