Video: Unboxing and Review of the Huawei MateBook X Laptop

Published

on

Product design has evolved over the years and when it comes to devices like laptops, we have seen lots of thin and light models on the market. With laptops it is all about portability and today we are reviewing the Huawei Matebook X, which weighs just 1kg and is smaller than an A4-size paper.

The Huawei Matebook X is a thin and light laptop that measures just 13.6 mm. It comes packed in a lightweight aluminium unibody and Huawei has used a new spraying process to produce a smooth finish on the surface. So the overall design and build quality is top-notch.

This is also the company’s first laptop that comes with Infinite FullView Display that offers a 90 percent screen-to-body ratio. So why is this possible? Well, the company has moved the camera from the top of the screen to the keyboard area.

The camera can be activated by pressing the spring loaded button on the keyboard. The 13-inch screen also offers a 3:2 aspect ratio. This means you get more display area for productivity tools than competing products on the market. The laptop’s display offers a resolution of 3000-by-2000 pixels, offers 100% sRGB colours and a contrast ratio of 1500:1.

You can interact with the laptop just like your smartphone through its 10-point multitouch panel. For example, the Fingers Gesture Screenshot allows you to take a screenshot with a three-finger downwards swipe.

You also get two eye care modes in the display. The Eye Comfort mode filters out blue light emissions to provide eye strain relief during long sessions of use. And the Brightness Adjustment mode ensures your viewing experience is consistent, when you are indoors or under direct sunlight.

Under the hood, the Matebook X comes with a 10th Generation Intel Core i5 processor. You also get 16GB RAM, which is sufficient for productivity and multimedia jobs. The Matebook X also comes with Wi-Fi 6 support, that offers three times the speed of Wi-Fi 5. The laptop is powered by a 42Wh battery, which offers a a battery life of up to 9 hours.

One of the standout features of the Matebook X is its multi-screen collaboration feature. This feature in Huawei Share allows you to seamlessly collaborate between smartphones and PCs. There are three ways to connect to your smartphone to the laptop wirelessly.

First enable NFC and Wi-Fi on your Huawei smartphone. Then tap the back of the device gently against the click pad, which now has an embedded Huawei Share tag. Then, follow the on screen prompts on both devices to complete the pairing.

The second way is to first enable Wi-Fi and Bluetooth on the phone. Then, on the notebook, go to My phone and click Connect. Then, just place the phone in close proximity to the notebook to establish a connection automatically.

And the third way is to connect using a QR Code. For this, all you need to do is enable Wi-Fi and ensure that your phone is connected to the Internet. On the HUAWEI MateBook X, open PC Manager, go to My phone, Connect and click “Scan” to connect using the QR code.

Once a smartphone is connected to HUAWEI MateBook X, the smartphone screen is integrated into the laptop with a picture-in-picture window. In addition to easy drag-and-drop file transfer, this feature allows the PC to directly open and edit files on the smartphone. You also get a feature called Instant Hotspot that lets you access theInternet via tethering.

And if you want to video call friends, families or business associates, you can use the camera that is hidden away into the keyboard efficiently. Watching movies on the HUAWEI Matebook X becomes enjoyable as it comes with a quad-speaker sound system with support for virtual 5.1 channel output. In terms of connectivity, you get two USB-C ports on both edges of the laptop.

While many brands do not offer an expansion dongle with laptops that only come with USB C ports, HUAWEI has bundled the MateDock 2 dongle along with the device. The dongle comes with a USB-C, VGA , HDMI and a USB-A port. During our review period we found the performance of the HUAWEI Matebook X to be very good.

The laptop was able to handle all sorts of productivity jobs with ease. We also enjoyed watching movies on the laptop – through the screen size is just 13-inches the images were very vibrant and crisp. Since the laptop also supports virtual 5.1 channel output, audio quality was top notch.

The bass levels were quite good even though the laptop is thin and light, while the mids and the highs were excellent. Though the audio level is not very loud it is good enough for a personal listening experience. The HUAWEI Matebook X is priced at AED 5499 and is available in two colours – Forest Green and Silver Frost.
