Review: ASUS ROG STRIX RTX 3070 OC
The ASUS ROG STRIX RTX 3070 OC Edition is very similar to NVIDIA’s Founders Edition. This one offers 5888 Cuda Core and 8GB of GDDR6 memory at 14Gbps. You also get a boost clock of 1905MHz in the “Gaming Mode”, which can throttle up to 1935MHz in “OC Mode”. In terms of video outputs, there are five. This includes two HDMI 2.1 ports and three DisplayPort 1.4a ports.
The TDP on the ROG STRIX RTX 3070 OC is higher than the Founders Edition model and goes up to 280 watts, with the board being powered by two 8-pin connectors.
Hence, ASUS recommends using a power supply of at least 750W. Obviously, the double BIOS is not missing, a feature already seen several times on the ROG Strix GPU series; you can choose between Performance and Quiet Mode, depending on whether you need more performance or more silence.
In terms of look and feel, the ROG STRIX RTX 3070 OC is designed to impress. It comes packed in a fantastic-looking case – it feels solid and the overall build quality is top notch.
There’s also a beautiful metal backplate, with a striking new RGB feature. The cooling system of the ROG STRIX RTX 3070 OC is quite impressive.
The card measures 318.5-by-140.1-by-57.78mm making it even bigger than an RTX 3090. ASUS has also revamped its Axial-tech fans, which now ensure even better airflow.
The central fan of the dissipation system rotates in the opposite direction to the others in order to eliminate turbulence, it is also equipped with a solid edge which helps to increase the static pressure.
Our test system includes an Intel Core i7 9700K processor, the ASUS ROG MAXIMUS XI APEX, the ASUS ROG THOR 850W Power Supply Unit, and GSKIL TridentZ 3200MHz CL14 2x4GB RAM modules.
In the synthetic benchmarks, the ASUS ROG STRIC RTX 3070 OC already begins to show its potential quite clearly.
In the 3DMark: Night Raid tests, the overall score stood at 61705, while the graphic score stood at 128374. In 3DMark: Fire Strike, we gauged 26135 in score and 44199 in graphic score.
In 3DMark: Fire Strike Ultra, we clocked a score of 8834, while the graphic score stood at 8894. In 3DMark Timespy we got a score of 12932 and a GPU score of 18189. Finally, in the 3DMark Port Royal we got a score of 8366.
In our Non OC 4K, 2K and 1K tests, the following were the observation:
As you can see, the ASUS ROG STRIX RTX 3070 OC aced most of the tests. When it came to measuring the operating temperatures, through the FurMark 15 mins test, the idle temperatures stood at 37-degree C, while the load temperature stood at 68-degree C. At idle (maximum fan speed), the temperature stood at 26-degree C, while at load (maximum fan speed), we measured the temperature at 63-degree C.
The ASUS ROG STRIX RTX 3070 OC is a card that works well, especially for fast 1440p screens, and manages to deliver a good price-performance ratio. It is also excellent at 1080p gaming and it handles 4K reasonably well, provided you scale down some settings here and there.
For the extra performance, ASUS relies on its top-notch design, the efficient cooling system, and its excellent feature-set. And these traits make it a perfect graphics card to look at if you are building your next gaming powerhouse.
