Review: Double Robotics Double 3 Telepresence Robot

Published

on

The age of the robots is here – and we mean for the better. A wide range of companies have started investing in robotics and telepresence, and one of the companies to commercially launch such robots onto the market is Double Robotics. The company sent us the Double 3 for a test drive a week ago and boy, did we have fun!

The Double 3 is, as the company describes, a self-driving, two-wheeled videoconferencing robot that has been designed to make remote work effortless. The robot is aimed at telecommuters, doctors, remote workers, and students to give them a feeling of “physical presence” where they can’t be in person.

The Double 3 has been upgraded with the latest tech that’s available on the market today. Unlike its predecessors, the Double 3 does not use just an iPad for an interface. Instead, it uses a fully-integrated solution that packs in the latest Nvidia Jetson TX2 GPU tech, two Intel RealSense depth sensors, two high-resolution cameras rated at 13MP, and a beam-forming microphone array that consists of 6 microphones.

Since the Double 3 flaunts new hardware, you now get a new click-to-drive interface, obstacle avoidance, and pan/tilt/zoom video functions, to provide a fully-immersive remote experience to seasoned users as well as complete beginners. Starting off with the Double 3 is a walk in the park.

Once out of the box, connect the head to the body that consists of a rod attached to a pair of wheels. The head runs Ubuntu Linux 18.04 LTS as the operating system of choice. Switch the Double 3 on, and it will walk you through the setup procedure, which hardly takes minutes to complete.

Once completed, you get a digital pair of eyes on the screen, indicating the Double 3 is ready to use. The Double 3 comes with an array of 3D sensors, which lets it map the floor and its surroundings, thus allowing it to divert around obstacles to reach its destination.

This means you can drive the telepresence robot without the fear of bumping into walls or people. In order to drive the Double 3, all you need to do is log on to drive.doublerobotics.com, log in with your username and password. Once you do that, the interface will show you all the Double 3 robots that are connected to your login ID.

Select the robot you would like to drive or use and you will see it log into the robot. From there on you can use the onscreen controls to drive the robot around your house or office, log into a video conference, and more. You can drive your Double 3 from anywhere in the world via Mac, PC/Windows, iPad, Android, or iPhone.

In order to test the Double 3 out, we installed and set it up, which hardly took minutes. Once done, we were able to drive it around, even over difficult terrain such as doorways. The robot was even able to balance itself over tough terrain inside our office such as a door threshold and cross it with ease.

We also tried logging into a video call through an Android smartphone. The call quality and the video quality were very good, considering the Double 3 has two 13MP cameras and 6 microphones. On a single charge, the Double 3 worked non-stop for about 4 hours, before it needed to recharge from its charging dock.

The Double 3 can move autonomously and offer a new mixed-reality driver’s interface. By doing this, Double Robotics enables users to drive their own Double 3 to roam around the office, visit patients, attend meetings, monitor work sites, or go to class from anywhere in the world.

The Double 3 with a charging dock is priced at AED 19,290 which includes the VAT. Installation and setup are free in the UAE. It is worth noting that if you invested in a Double 2 robot, you can just stick a Double 3 head on a Double 2 body and it instantly becomes a Double 3.

However, if you are on the market for a telepresence robot that is easy to install, setup, and use, offers a good set of features, you can’t go wrong with the Double Robotics Double 3.

Review: Corsair Sabre RGB Pro Wireless Mouse

Published

on

As part of its Champion Series, Corsair announced its latest Sabre RGB Pro Wireless Mouse on the market today. The company sent the new mouse to us in advance for a review. And after using the mouse for a couple of days, we are glad to report that it exceeded our expectations.

The new mouse joins the league of the Sabre RGB Pro, which was launched earlier in 2021. The new Sabre RGB Pro Wireless is very lightweight and packs in an ergonomic design, that offers a competitive advantage to gamers. The mouse itself offers wired and wireless connectivity to laptops and PCS.

In terms of wireless, you get two options – either through Bluetooth or through Slipstream Wireless. The advantage of using Slipstream Wireless is that the technology transmits inputs at sub-1ms speeds, delivering mouse movements and clicks up to two times faster than a conventional gaming mouse, while also ensuring exceptional wireless signal quality throughout your gameplay.

You also get up to 90 hours of battery life that lets you play wire-free for days between charges. In terms of design, the Sabre RGB Pro Wireless features a similar design seen on the wired version. The Wireless variant though has a bit of heft to it when compared with the wired variant.

You get standard left and right-click buttons, with a slight groove in them for comfortably holding two fingers. You also get a bit of texture to the material on both the left and right-click that keeps your fingers from slipping. Forward and back buttons flank the left side of the mouse, and there is a DPI quick-select button just below the scroll wheel.

Inside the box, you get the Sabre RGB Pro Wireless mouse, along with the Slipstream Wireless receiver, a USB Type-C charging cable, the quick start guide, the warranty info and the safety instructions. Getting started with the Sabre RGB Pro Wireless is effortless. Connect the Slipstream Wireless connector to your PC or laptop and switch on the mouse in Slipstream mode, and you are good to go.

The mouse weighs just 79-gms – so rapid movements and lightning-quick reflexes are not a problem. The mouse also comes packed with professional-grade gaming mouse elements, such as the first-ever Corsair Marksman optical sensor. The mouse also comes with the highest dpi in any Corsair mouse to date at 26,000-dpi. This makes sure you get very precise movement.

The mouse is also compatible for use with Corsair’s very own iCUE software. With this app, you can customise dynamic RGB backlighting, remap buttons, create macros, and adjust DPI settings. All of these can be stored onto three onboard profiles. On the bottom of the Sabre RGB Pro Wireless, you will find a switch to move between Slipstream (RF), charging/wired, or Bluetooth modes and a button above that to initiate pairing for the latter.

Both types of wireless connections worked without issue during our review. However, while gaming, it’s better to use the dongle and Slipstream, as it delivers lower latency at sub-1ms. The mouse was comfortable overall to hold and use.

During our review, we put the Corsair Sabre RGB Pro Wireless to test with a couple of games including Watch Dogs Legion, GTA V, and Doom Eternal. The mouse was very comfortable, quick to respond, and reliable. The buttons were very comfortable as well to use and the sensor on the mouse was very responsive.

The Corsair Sabre RGB Pro Wireless Mouse comes with an impressive sensor, a very aesthetic and comfortable design, Slipstream Wireless technology, good overall performance, and a 26,000-DPI.

The pricing of AED 429, is a bit steep. However, if you are looking at top-notch performance, with very good connectivity options, the Corsair Sabre RGB Pro Wireless mouse comes across as highly recommended. It thus walks away with the Gadget Voize Editors’ Choice award!

Apple Intros iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 Mini

Published

on

Apple has introduced iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 mini, featuring a beautiful design with sleek flat edges in five gorgeous new colors. Both models feature major innovations, including the most advanced dual-camera system ever on iPhone — with a new Wide camera with bigger pixels and sensor-shift optical image stabilization (OIS) offering improvements in low-light photos and videos, a new way to personalize the camera with Photographic Styles, and Cinematic mode, which brings a new dimension to video storytelling.

iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 mini also boast super-fast performance and power efficiency with A15 Bionic, longer battery life, a brighter Super Retina XDR display that brings content to life, incredible durability with the Ceramic Shield front cover, double the entry-level storage at 128GB, an industry-leading IP68 rating for water resistance, and an advanced 5G experience.

iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 mini will be available in pink, blue, midnight, starlight, and (PRODUCT)RED, with pre-orders beginning Friday, September 17, and availability beginning Friday, September 24. iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 mini have been redesigned on the inside and out, and come in five gorgeous colors featuring a durable flat-edge design and an elegant aluminum frame.

The 6.1-inch and 5.4-inch displays feature Ceramic Shield on the front, exclusive to iPhone and tougher than any smartphone glass. Both models have an industry-leading IP68 rating for water resistance, and are designed to protect against spills from common liquids.

A redesigned rear camera layout with diagonally arranged lenses enables the advanced dual-camera system, and a redesigned TrueDepth camera system is smaller while still packing in the same breakthrough technologies, including Face ID, the most secure facial authentication in a smartphone, but offering more display area.

Major battery life improvements come to both iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 mini, made possible by A15 Bionic, more efficient components, a larger battery, and power optimizations from a deep integration of hardware and software. iPhone 13 delivers incredible all-day battery life, offering up to two and a half more hours in a day than iPhone 12, and iPhone 13 mini provides up to an hour and a half more in a day than iPhone 12 mini.

iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 mini represent a massive leap in camera design with advancements in hardware and computational photography that deliver stunning photos and videos. The new Wide camera, with 1.7 µm pixels, comes with the biggest sensor ever in an iPhone dual-camera system and is capable of gathering 47 percent more light for less noise and brighter results.

Sensor-shift OIS — a technology introduced in iPhone 12 Pro Max and not found in any other smartphone — also comes to the Wide camera, even in the more compact iPhone 13 mini. It stabilizes the sensor instead of the lens so shots are more steady, while the custom-designed Ultra Wide camera with a new sensor captures images with more detail in the dark areas of photos and videos with less noise.

Following extensive study of cinematography and the powerful use of rack focus, Cinematic mode on iPhone records videos of people, pets, and objects with a beautiful depth effect with automatic focus changes, so anyone can capture cinema-style moments, even if they aren’t a professional filmmaker.

For creative control, the focus can be changed during and after capture, and users can also adjust the level of bokeh in the Photos app and iMovie for iOS, and coming soon to iMovie for macOS and Final Cut Pro, making the iPhone 13 lineup the only devices able to edit the depth-of-field effect in video even after recording.
Enabled by A15 Bionic and advanced machine learning algorithms, Cinematic mode records in Dolby Vision HDR. Both models also offer HDR video recording with Dolby Vision — from capture to editing and sharing — now supported for 4K up to 60 fps on all cameras.

iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 mini will be available in pink, blue, midnight, starlight, and (PRODUCT)RED in a new entry-level capacity of 128GB for double the storage, as well as 256GB and 512GB capacities. Customers can get iPhone 13 for AED 3,399 before trade-in, and iPhone 13 mini for AED 2,999 before trade-in from apple.com/ae/store, in the Apple Store app, and at Apple Store locations.
