Video: Review of the Elgato Wave 3 USB Microphone

Published

on

The new Wave 3 is a USB microphone and software mixer from Elgato, a Corsair sub-brand that makes quality products for content creators. Coming in at a price point of AED 718.81, the Wave 3 is a perfect solution for those into streaming, recording, and podcasting.

Upon unboxing the device, you get a quick start guide, a USB Type-C cable, a boom arm adapter that converts from a quarter-inch to a 3/8th and 5/8th inch, and some paperwork. And then, you have the Wave 3 microphone.

Though Wave 3 is built using a mix of plastic and metal, the overall build quality is quite good. The Wave 3 does not have a heft itself, though the desktop stand is quite nice with a rubbery finish on the bottom.

On the back of the device, you get the USB-C port and a 5.5mm audio jack. On the front, you get a metal mesh that feels quite good, and just below that, you get a dial that controls the microphone gain, the volume of the headphones, and the mix level. The LEDs indicate the level of the setting.

On the top of the microphone, you get the mute button which is touch-sensitive. The microphone has a cardioid polar pattern, a frequency response ranging between 70 and 20,000Hz, and it works with both Windows and MacOS.

One of the stand out features of the Elgato Wave 3 is its Clipguard technology. This technology keeps clipping at bay – this is useful especially during live streams when you get a bit excited and your voice goes above normal listening levels.

When input levels peak, Elgato’s Clipguard technology instantly reroutes sound through a second signal path that runs at a lower volume. The result is clean audio output, no matter how loud you scream.

The Wave 3 also supports Elagto’s Wave Link, a software that is built specifically for controlling audio in your Twitch streams, YouTube videos, and podcasts. With the Wave Link, you can have up to nine channels that could include the game audio, voice chat, music, alerts, samples, multiple mics (not supported at this time, but will be available soon), and more. These nine independent input channels can then be blended into a unified audio source in real-time.

Wave Link also allows you to mute copyrighted music in your stream mix to avoid violations, and keep listening via your monitor mix. You can also add Wave Link as a master audio source in OBS Studio to take complete control of your audio workflow. What’s more, Wave Link uses less than 1% of your CPU, and hence, no external audio processing hardware is required.

The Elgato Wave 3 is a great USB microphone that offers an outstanding list of features including the cool Clipguard tech that does not clip your voice, no matter how loud you scream during your streaming session. The intuitive Wave Link software further offers lots of bells and whistles that make the Wave 3 a truly worthwhile investment.

The Elgato Wave 3 thus walks away with the Gadget Voize Editors’ Choice award!

Review: Lenovo ThinkPad Z13

Published

on

If you were looking to buy a laptop for work, you must have considered Lenovo’s ThinkPad series of laptops in your shortlisting process. The company’s ThinkPad series has stood the test of time and have emerged as one of the top choices for business laptops. With the new ThinkPad Z series, which includes the Z13 and the Z16, the company has totally refreshed the design of the laptops.

The Lenovo ThinkPad Z13 comes packed in a beautiful body. The company has used sustainable materials such as recycled aluminum and recycled black vegan leather to build the laptop. The company also has its sights on sustainability – this philosophy extends to the packaging of the laptop, which is made using 100% renewable bamboo and sugarcane. In addition, the AC power adapter of the laptop uses 90% Post-Consumer Content (PCC).

As mentioned earlier, the company has used black vegan leather on the lid, while the edges have a brushed bronze metal look and feel. The overall build quality is quite robust. Open up the lid and you get a 13.3-inch WQXGA OLED touchscreen display that offers a peak brightness of 400 nits. The display supports an aspect ratio of 16:10, offers a 91.6% screen-to-body ratio, and is Eyesafe certified. The display also supports Dolby Vision and Low Blue Light functionality.

On the top of the display, you will also find what Lenovo calls the “Communication Bar”. This includes a 1080p webcam, an integrated Windows Hello IR camera, and dual microphones. The laptop is also the first Lenovo ThinkPad to come packed with a trackpad that uses haptic feedback. This means the trackpad doesn’t have a physical click mechanism at all. This one uses haptics to simulate the feeling of a click, even if there’s no depression of a button whatsoever.

In terms of connectivity, the Z13 has one USB-C port on each side. This means the laptop can be conveniently charged on either side. On the right edge, you also get a 3.5mm audio jack, the Power button, and a Nano-SIM card slot. In terms of security, you can either use your fingerprint or your face to unlock the device, thanks to the Windows Hello integration.

Other security features include the eShutter option. Instead of using a physical shutter, the camera can be locked electronically by pressing F9. Another new feature is the Microsoft Pluton security chip, which performs the task of a dTPM chip. It also blocks a Linux installation by default, but this can be easily changed in the BIOS.

Under the hood, the Lenovo ThinkPad Z13 is powered by an AMD Ryzen PRO 6850U processor running at a clock speed of 2.70GHz. You also get Radeon Graphics, 16GB of RAM, and 512GB of PCIe Gen 4 SSD storage. Wireless connectivity options include Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth 5.2. The laptop also weighs 1.25-kgs. Inside the box, you get the 65-watt power adapter along with the laptop, but that’s it. If you need additional connectivity options, you may need to buy a connectivity hub.

The ThinkPad Z13 also offers a two-stage backlit keyboard, which is quite similar to the one on the Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Nano. It offers a key travel of 1.35 mm. In addition, Lenovo has included a standard-width keyboard on the ThinkPad Z13. This means the keyboard has very minimal borders on the sides. Using the keyboard and the trackpad was a great experience. And Lenovo has also included the iconic ThinkPad TrackPoint, too.

The overall performance of the laptop was very good. We ran a few benchmarks to gauge the real-world performance of the laptop. On PCMark 10, the Lenovo ThinkPad Z13 was able to clock 5517 points. In CrossMark, the laptop was able to clock an overall 1417 points. In AIDA64’s Memory Copy benchmark, we registered 47109 MB/s, while in the Memory Read benchmark, we got 38065 MB/s. In AIDA64’s Memory Write benchmark, we got 50118 MB/s. In 3DMark 11, The Lenovo ThinkPad Z13 scored 6860 points.

The Lenovo ThinkPad Z13 also scored really well in our battery life tests. On a single charge, we clocked over 12 hours of day-to-day usage. This is really good considering the target audience this laptop is aimed at – mobile professionals.

Lenovo seems to have nailed it with the new ThinkPad Z13. With the Z13, what we get is a very beautifully designed laptop, that does not skimp on features and performance.

I would have personally liked more USB-C ports on this thing, but frankly, since I also carry a tiny dock around, which offers a few more USB-C ports, standard USB ports, and an HDMI port, it isn’t a biggie.

The Lenovo ThinkPad Z13 thus walks away with the Gadget Voize Editors’ Choice award!

Review: Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4

Published

on

Samsung seems to have taken the foldable phones game to a whole new level with the new Galaxy Z Fold 4. It offers a great design and build quality, great multitasking features, a large display, and a fantastic camera setup.

On the front, you get a 6.2-inch HD+ Dynamic AMOLED cover screen that looks and works like a traditional smartphone. Open the Fold 4 up and you are now staring at a gorgeous 7.6-inch QXGA+ Dynamic AMOLED main display.

There is still a crease on the middle of the display, but it is less noticeable than last year’s Galaxy Z Fold 3. Both the displays on the Z Fold 4 offer a 120Hz refresh rate, which is very important these days especially if you are into mobile gaming.

The smartphone is quite easy to hold when it is folded. On the right edge, you will find the dual SIM tray, the volume rockers, and the power button which is a bit recessed since it also doubles up as a fingerprint scanner.

On the left, you will find the Samsung branding, On the bottom edge, you get the speaker grille, the USB Type C port, and a noise-cancelling microphone, while on the top edge, you get the speaker grille and three noise-cancelling microphones.

One of the biggest complaints about foldable phones generally was average-grade cameras. Well, Samsung has changed all of that with the Fold 4. On the back of the device, you will find a triple camera setup similar to the one found on the Samsung Galaxy S22+.

This includes a 50-megapixel wide camera, a 12-megapixel ultrawide, and a 10-megapixel telephoto camera with 3x optical zoom and 30x digital Space Zoom. On the cover display, you also get a 10-megapixel front-facing camera, while there’s also an under-display camera when the Fold 4 is unfolded, rated at 4 megapixels.

The cameras were able to capture some amazing shots. Pictures and videos looked bright and vibrant. Even under low light conditions, the camera system on the Fold 4 performed really well.

Under the hood, the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4 is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 processor and 12GB of RAM with up to 8GB of RAM Plus. For storage, you can choose between 256GB, 512GB, and 1TB.

The variant we received for this review was the 12GB/256GB variant in Graygreen colour. Other colour options include Phantom Black and Beige, while if you purchase the Fold 4 from Samsung.com, you also get an additional Burgundy colour option. The battery on the Z Fold 4 is rated at 4400mAh.

The Z Fold 4 ships with Android 12L with Samsung’s OneUI 4.1.1 running on top of it. Google released Android 12L as a special build for larger-screened Android devices, such as foldable phones and tablets.

The most notable addition to Android 12L that you’ll notice out of the box is that the Z Fold 4 has a taskbar at the bottom of the screen. The taskbar gives you a place to keep your favourite or most-used apps and have them always present and ready to open. In addition, the Z fold 4 also supports S Pen.

The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4 is a foldable smartphone that offers a very strong and durable build. It also comes packed with a large and brilliant internal display, offers excellent performance, and provides multitasking features. One of the major updates in the Z Fold 4 is its upgraded rear cameras which take some amazing shots – whether it is photos or videos.
