Review: Oppo Reno6 Z 5G

Published

on

The new Oppo Reno6 Z 5G is a trimmed-down variant of the company’s flagship – the Reno6 5G. Powered by MediaTek’s Dimensity 800U 5G, this variant comes packed with a 6.43-inches AMOLED display on the front. The design of the Reno6 Z is also quite different from what’s seen on the Reno6 5G.

However, the build quality is still solid. Oppo has used a mix of metal, plastic, and glass to build the new Reno6 Z 5G. It measures just 7.9mm in thickness and weighs 173-gms in weight. It also packs in 8GB of RAM and up to 256GB of expandable storage.

Coming in at a price point of AED 1499, the Reno6 Z 5G offers great bang for the buck. It is powered by the Android 11 operating system, with Oppo’s very own ColorOS 11.1 skin on top of it. The AMOLED display on this thing offers a refresh rate of 60Hz, a resolution of 1080-by-2400 pixels, an aspect ratio of 20:9, and about 84.1% screen-to-body ratio.

You also get a pixel density of 411-PPI and a peak brightness of 800 nits. The display is also protected by Corning Gorilla Glass. Right above the display on the left, you get a wide-angle front shooter offering a resolution of 32 megapixels and a viewable angle of 85°.  The front shooter also offers an aperture of f/2.4.

Flip the phone around and you will come face to face with a triple camera setup. Now, this includes a main wide-angle 64-megapixel camera offering an aperture of f/1.7; an 8-megapixel ultrawide camera offering an aperture of f/2.2; and a 2-megapixel macro offering an aperture of f/2.4.

The rear camera module offers features such as HDR, autofocus, and gyro-based EIS. You can record 4K videos at 30fps and 1080p videos at 30fps and 120fps. On the right edge, you get the power button, while on the left edge, you get the volume rockers and a triple card slot, which takes in two SIM cards and a microSD card.

On the top, you get a secondary microphone, while on the bottom edge, you get the speaker grille, a USB-C charging port, a 3.5mm audio jack, and the primary microphone. You also get features such as face unlock, an in-screen fingerprint sensor, and a wide range of sensors such as proximity, gyroscope, accelerometer, and an ambient light sensor, among others.

The battery on the Reno6 Z 5G is rated at 4310 mAh and it supports VOOC Flash Charge 4.0 and reverse charging. The display on this phone offers good viewing angles, very good contrast, and excellent colours.

Overall performance is quite good for the price point it is available at. Day-to-day application use shouldn’t weigh down the device. Gaming was also a decent experience, though don’t expect to play your favourite games at the highest settings, since this is still a mid-range device.

The cameras also performed quite well, even under low light conditions. I was quite impressed by the portrait shots taken using this device. The macro lens also performed quite well, under good lighting conditions.

For a price of AED 1499, you are still getting a phone with a really nice AMOLED display, good cameras, 5G connectivity and good overall performance. With the Reno6 Z 5G, Oppo seems to have done a pretty good job at bringing out a very good mid-ranger, at an affordable price point.

Apple Detects Spyware Targeting iPhones in Multiple Countries

Published

on

Apple has issued a second spyware attack warning to iPhone users in 98 countries, raising concerns about the growing threat to mobile security. This follows a similar alert in April targeting users in 92 countries.

While specific details about the latest attacks remain under wraps, the alert serves as a stark reminder of the evolving threat landscape. India is one confirmed country where users received the notification.

Spyware, a particularly invasive type of malware, can grant attackers complete access to an iPhone, including encrypted messages, audio, and video. The notorious Pegasus spyware from NSO Group is a well-known example.

“Apple detected that you are being targeted by a mercenary spyware attack that is trying to remotely compromise the iPhone associated with your Apple ID -xxx-,” Apple wrote in its new spyware alert.

Adding to the concern, researchers recently revealed the return of LightSpy, a “particularly dangerous” campaign capable of pinpointing a target’s location with “near-perfect accuracy.”

The worrying aspect of these attacks is their ability to exploit “zero-click” vulnerabilities, meaning infection can occur without any user interaction, such as opening a malicious link or attachment.

This highlights the importance of remaining vigilant and following Apple’s security recommendations, which may include updating your device to the latest iOS version.
