Published

on

In recent years, the demand for lightweight, high-performance laptops has been increasing. Users are craving portable laptops to satisfy their needs for mobile work – whether they’re working in open areas, on the road, or on business trips. In addition, they also value display quality, as well as the laptop’s performance to ensure it copes with the heavy workload on-hand.

Taking this into consideration, HUAWEI has just announced its new MateBook X Pro to the regional market that answers the very same issues mobile professionals face today. The MateBook X Pro features a top-notch design and a solid build quality. It is available in two different variants when it comes to the laptop’s chassis. There’s a space grey variant with an aluminium body, while this ink blue variant, which we have reviewed here is made using a magnesium alloy chassis. The laptop also weighs just 1.26-kgs.

Inside the box, you get the HUAWEI MateBook X Pro, a 90 W USB-C Power Adapter, a USB-C Charger Cable, a HUAWEI USB-C OTG Cable, a Quick Start Guide, and the Warranty Card. Upon opening the lid, you come face to face with a 14.2-inches LTPS screen that offers a resolution of 3120-by-2080 pixels and a pixel density of 264-PPI.

You get a screen-to-body ratio of 92.5%, an aspect ratio of 3:2, and a 90-Hz refresh rate. In addition, the display offers a maximum brightness of 500 nits, 100% coverage of the P3 colour gamut, a contrast ratio of 1500:1, and a viewing angle of 178 degrees.

Just above the display, you will find a 720P camera for your video conferencing requirements. The MateBook X Pro comes with a full-size backlit chiclet keyboard, which offers a brilliant 1.5 mm key travel that makes for a satisfying typing experience. The power button meanwhile also doubles up as a fingerprint scanner.

The HUAWEI Free Touch touchpad has some tricks up its sleeve. Sliding up and down on the left edge of the touchpad controls the brightness while sliding up and down on the right edge of the touchpad controls the volume. Sliding left and right on the top edge of the touchpad will allow you to fast-forward or rewind a video.

In addition, you can take a screenshot by clicking with one finger on the touchpad, while clicking once with two fingers on the touchpad would start a screen recording session. The touch experience is comfortable to use because the surface of the touchpad is covered by a piece of glass. In addition, the Air gestures are now available in the HUAWEI MateBook X Pro, supporting three gestures. These include air scroll left and right, air scroll up and down, and air press.

In terms of audio performance, the MateBook X Pro is HUAWEI Sound certified and comes packed with six speakers and four microphones. When it comes to the I/O ports, you get two Thunderbolt 4 ports on the left edge, two USB-C ports on the right edge and a 3.5 mm headset and microphone combo jack.

Since HUAWEI also bundles a Type-C to Type-A dongle, you can use regular USB drives with the laptop. Wireless connectivity support includes Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth 5.2. The laptop also derives its power from a 60 Wh battery.

Under the hood, the MateBook X Pro comes packed with a 12th Gen Intel Core i7-1260P Processor, which is based on the new EVO architecture. You also get 16GB of LPDDR5 memory, and 1TB of NVMe PCIe SSD storage. Graphics are handled by Intel Iris Xe Graphics.

The MateBook X Pro also supports HUAWEI’s multiscreen collaboration technology. By tapping the MateBook X Pro icon, you can activate the Multi-screen Collaboration. You can edit phone files directly on your laptop by using the PC software and the display. In order to use this feature, however, you will need to log in with your HUAWEI ID on the PC Manager app on the MateBook X Pro.

With Super Device and Multi-Screen Collaboration, you can increase productivity with very minimal effort. You can freely connect different devices as required and use them as if you were using a single device. The overall performance of the HUAWEI MateBook X Pro is very good. Battery life was also quite good and if you do see yourself running out of battery, you can take the advantage of the 90W Super-Fast Charging technology.

If you are a mobile professional who is always on the move and are looking for an ultra-light laptop with excellent performance, you cannot go wrong with the HUAWEI Matebook X Pro. It offers an outstanding display, fast charging capabilities, good battery performance, excellent specs, brilliant sound and some standout features that make your hybrid working experience, a breeze.

Review: Bose QuietComfort 45 Noise Cancelling Smart Headphones

Published

on

Bose’s new QuietComfort 45 headphones replace the successful QuietComfort 35 II. The new pair of headphones come with noise cancellation features, and a new “Aware” Mode to lets you listen to your environment through your headphones when you want to. It also offers voice isolation for easier conversations and 24-hour battery life on a single charge.

In terms of design, the QC 45 is very similar to its predecessor, the QC 35 II. According to Bose, it also uses the same audio drivers, and the buttons are also in the same place. There are a few differences, though. The QC 45 comes with a USB-C port, instead of the micro USB seen on the QC 35 II.

The QC 45 also comes with six microphones, four of which are beamforming and used for voice. The QC 35 II, meanwhile, had a total of four, two of which were used for voice. Like most headphones in the QuietComfort range, the QC 45 is also very comfortable to wear over the ear. The fit of the headphones is also very good, which translates into it being a perfect pair of headphones, for longer listening sessions.

The headphones also come with the new “Aware” mode, which we briefly mentioned earlier. This setting passes ambient sound from the headphones’ external microphones through to the headphones so you can hear what’s going on around you without having to remove the headphones. Bose has also upgraded the Bluetooth version of the headphones from 4.1 to 5.1.

In terms of design and build quality, the QC 45 is top-notch. The headphones are really well made and they are very comfortable to wear for extended periods. Bose also includes physical control buttons on the QC 45. This includes the sliding power switch on the outside of the right earcup, while there are three buttons on the underside of the cup, that handle music and call controls.

The center button has multiple functions – a single press plays or pauses audio; a double press skips to the next track; a triple-press skips back a track and holding it down summons your phone’s voice assistant. These are small nice touches Bose has added to the headphones. You also get a 2.5mm audio jack and Bose bundles a 2.5mm to 3.5mm audio cable in the box.

The battery life of the QC 45 is rated at 24 hours on a single charge. In real-world tests, we were able to clock 18 hours of music listening sessions, before the headphones needed to be recharged.

The Bose QuietComfort 45 excels at audio quality. Lows, mids, and highs were perfect while the bass performance was on point. The guitar strings sounded very lively in Charlie Puth’s “We Don’t Talk Anymore”. Listening to The Piano Guys’ rendition of Adele’s “Hello” was truly mind-blowing. Avicii’s “Waiting For Love” sounded magical on the Bose QuietComfort 45.

Priced at AED 1349, the Bose QuietComfort 45 is right up there among the most expensive ANC headphones. However, you really need to listen to your favourite music tracks wearing the Bose QuietComfort 45 to truly appreciate the sound quality. And at that, the QC 45 really excels. The Bose QuietComfort 45 thus walks away with the Gadget Voize Editors’ Choice award!

Review: HONOR X8

Published

on

HONOR has been churning out one quality smartphone after the other with quick succession over the past couple of years and the latest to roll out of its production line is the new HONOR X8. This smartphone comes with top-notch specs, and one of the stand out features of this device is the HONOR RAM Turbo technology.

On the front of the X8, you get a 6.7-inch LCD panel that offers a refresh rate of 90Hz. You also get a 93.6% screen-to-body ratio and TUV Eye Protection. Just above the display, you will find a 16MP front shooter for all your selfies.

On the right edge, you get the volume rockers and the power button that also doubles up as the fingerprint scanner. On the left edge you get the dual SIM slot, while on the top edge, you get the noise-cancelling microphone. On the bottom edge, you get the USB Type-C port, a 3.5mm audio jack, the speaker grille, and a secondary noise-cancelling microphone.

At the rear of the HONOR X8, you will find the quad-camera setup that includes the main 64MP lens, a 5MP wide-angle lens, a 2MP macro lens, and a 2MP depth sensor. You also get a Super Night Mode for better photography under low light conditions.

The battery on the HONOR X8 is rated at 4000mAh and the phone runs on the Android 11 operating system with Honor’s very own Magic UI 4.2 on top of it. The HONOR X8 is powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 680 processor, coupled with 6GB of RAM, 2GB of Honor RAM Turbo, and 128GB of storage space.

So, let’s talk about the HONOR RAM Turbo – what it does is that it uses dynamic group compression and super memory flash fusion technology, to extend the capacity of running active Apps in the background of the device. This means that with the Honor X8, you get a phone that gives you an experience of a phone with 12GB of RAM.

Since the apps run in the background, you can switch faster between them without having to relaunch the apps completely. In our tests, in each of the scenarios, we found that in the HONOR X8, games such as PUBG resumed from where it stopped, TikTok videos resumed from where it stopped, and even Amazon’s app resumed from the product page from where it stopped, even after using multiple applications.

With the HONOR RAM Turbo, you can have up to 20 different apps running in the background at the same time, which makes the HONOR X8 the best RAM Turbo smartphone on the market to date.

In terms of photography, the HONOR X8 does an amazing job under good lighting conditions. However, since the phone also comes with the Super Night Mode, shooting very good quality images isn’t an issue. The camera module on the HONOR X8 comes with an Intelligent multi-frame synthesis algorithm, which allows the smartphone to capture amazing pictures in dim light and night mode scenarios.

The HONOR X8 also captures more details in Night Mode with better exposure. The 5MP Wide camera on the phone meanwhile can cover up to 120 degrees of Field of View making it a “Super Wide-Angle Camera”. Just like the HONOR 50, the HONOR X8 will also offer Dual – View Recording. With this feature, you can shoot from the front and rear cameras at the same time. This feature will be available through an update in the month of April 2022.

Since the HONOR X8 comes with a 6.70inch 90 Hz display with a 93.6% screen-to-body ratio, you can have an immersive experience when watching movies or playing games. Furthermore, TUV Rheinland certification ensures eye strain-free multimedia usage and gaming. The Honor X8 also comes with a 4000mAh battery which supports 22.5W SuperCharge.

In just a 10-minute charge, you can get up to 3 hours of battery life, while in 90 minutes you can charge the device to 100% of its battery capacity. The performance of the device was pretty good – we did not encounter any stutter or lag while using the device.

The HONOR X8 is currently available in Titanium Silver, Midnight Black, Ocean Blue colour options. If you are looking for a smartphone with the best Best RAM Turbo technology, the HONOR X8 should be on top of your list. The Honor X8 thus walks away with the Gadget Voize Editors’ Choice award.

Review: ASUS AX3000 RT-AX58U Dual Band WiFi 6 Router

Published

on

ASUS’ AX3000 RT-AX58U is a dual-band WiFi 6 (802.11ax) router that supports MU-MIMO and OFDMA technology. The router also comes packed with the lifetime AiProtection Pro network security, which is powered by Trend Micro. What’s more, it is also compatible with the ASUS AiMesh WiFi system – so you can create your own mesh network for seamless wireless coverage across your house.

This router supports the Wi-Fi standard 802.11AX (Wi-Fi 6) and 160MHz bandwidth for better connectivity. Due to this, you can expect a total networking speed of about 3000Mbps, which includes 574Mbps on the 2.4GHz band, and 2402Mbps on the 5GHz band. It also means that the router supports network standards such as IEEE 802.11a, IEEE 802.11b, IEEE 802.11g, WiFi 4 (802.11n), WiFi 5 (802.11ac), WiFi 6 (802.11ax), IPv4, and IPv6.

Inside the box, you get the ASUS AX3000 RT-AX58U Dual Band WiFi 6 Router, the VIP warranty booklets, the quick start guide, an RJ-45 cable, and the power adapter.

The router itself isn’t huge and weighs just 538-gms. On the front, you get a bunch of LEDs that include the Power, 2.4G, 5G, four for the LAN, and one for the WAN.

At the rear, you get all the ports that include an RJ45 Gigabits BaseT port for WAN, four RJ45 Gigabits BaseT ports for LAN, and a USB 3.1 Gen 1 port. At the rear, you also get the power on/off switch, the power port, a WPS button, and the reset button.

The router comes with four external antennas, that can transmit and receive 2.4GHz (2×2) and 5GHz (2×2). It is powered by a 1.5GHz tri-core processor and is packed with 256MB of flash storage and 512MB of RAM.

Setting up the RTAX58U is really easy if you use the ASUS router app, which is available for both Android and iOS devices. Fire up the app and follow the onscreen instructions to connect the router to your modem. It took us less than 15 minutes to get online with this router.

Once connected, we ran the Speedtest to check out the connectivity quality. We got very good connectivity results overall – did not matter whether we were close to the router or in another room with a wall in between the router and our device. The connectivity was consistent with no drop in the connection.

One of the standout features of the RT-AX58U is that it supports the AiMesh function. This allows you to connect the router to another AiMesh supported router, to expand the Wi-Fi coverage. This is particularly useful if you live in a large apartment, townhouse, or villa.

The ASUS RT-AX58U also comes with the AiProtection Pro Antivirus feature, which is powered by TrendMicro. This service is designed to block any website containing malware or virus. During our tests, this feature worked perfectly and did not affect the connectivity speed.

You also get a parental control feature that can block websites for selected users based on a preset category. The built-in Adaptive QoS feature is great – it lets you select which device you want to have a higher priority. It also lets you choose what kind of Internet traffic will be able to enjoy a higher priority. There are multiple QoS modes included such as gaming and video conferencing to optimize the connectivity for that usage.

And you also get some more “bells and whistles”, in the form of features such as dual-WAN, VPN server, VPN client, download master, and lots more. While most users may not end up using these features, you will appreciate these add-ons, if you are an enthusiast.

For a price of AED 598.55, the ASUS AX3000 RT-AX58U Dual Band WiFi 6 Router comes across as a truly value-for-money router. It offers very strong WiFi coverage, lots of customisation options, fast WiFi 6 performance, parental controls, security controls, and accompanies a well-designed app and a great web-based interface. The AX3000 RT-AX58U Dual Band WiFi 6 Router thus walks away with the Gadget Voize Editors’ Choice award.
