Chinese smartphone maker Oppo and its sub-brand OnePlus have halted sales of smartphones in Germany after losing a patent lawsuit with Nokia. Nokia has accused the companies of using its patented technology for processing 4G and 5G signals without paying for a license, reports European patent news site Juve Patent, and won an injunction to halt sales last Friday in a German court.
For clarification, this is Nokia the Finnish telecoms giant, a massive player in European telecoms equipment. Nokia the mobile brand is owned by a separate company, also Finnish, named HMD Global. Oppo and OnePlus have complied with this order, as evidenced by changes to their German web stores.
Oppo’s site now makes no mention of hardware devices at all, including phones and smartwatches. Compare this to the company’s UK site, which features a link to Oppo’s store and various product information on the homepage. OnePlus has similarly stripped back its German site, compared with the UK site, which shows no results for phones or watches in its store. You can find your way to a product description with a little navigation, but clicking the “buy now” button sends you straight to a 404 error page.
Lenovo Launches New Yoga PCs
Lenovo has launched its next generation of premium, ultra-slim Windows 11 Yoga laptops. Speaking at the launch event, General Manager for Lenovo GULF, Mohammed Hilili said, “We’ve designed and engineered the new Yoga PCs with smarter features and an even more premium user experience to help people pursue their ambitions, relax, and get things done in their own way. Our inspiration behind the new lineup was driven by the hybrid life becoming the norm and our consumers demanding more of their devices to suit their needs. Our goal is to deliver devices that truly empower our users to consume, create, and collaborate on their own terms. This launch also gave us a unique opportunity to collaborate with local UAE talent to showcase the true capabilities of the lineup.”
The new Yoga line offers refreshes of the 14-inch and 16-inch Yoga Slim 7 Pro (known as Lenovo Slim 7 in the U.S.), the Yoga Slim 7i Pro (known as the Lenovo Slim 7i in the U.S.), and the Yoga 7. To meet the needs of the new hybrid home office, Lenovo has also announced today the new Yoga AIO 7, a new 4K 27-inch desktop PC that features an ergonomic hinge for endless adaptability, collaboration across multiple devices, and modern engineering for the contemporary home.
Made to merge unbelievable portability and versatility with more power, Lenovo’s Yoga 2-in-1 convertible laptops were pioneers in opening possibilities for users to flip and fold from work to play. The Yoga sub-brand has since expanded to encompass even more premium consumer devices that now span multiple form factors, including ultra-slim clamshell laptops, desktop computers, Chromebooks, and tablets.
In today’s new hybrid environment, the new generation of Yoga devices is designed to help people thrive against new challenges and opportunities in the way they connect, consume, create, and collaborate from the home, school, office, and beyond – giving users the tools to do more and the freedom to be themselves. Lenovo’s new Yoga Slim line exemplifies the pinnacle of this performance and portability – defined by its refined craftsmanship, premium experiences, and bold innovation. These ultra-slim laptops integrate a comfortable edge design with humanizing soft contours for easier and more comfortable mobility and handling.
They’re also crafted for premium experiences, powered by Lenovo’s X Power, a newly defined set of features committed to better-upgraded performance. To add, they’re enhanced by Lenovo’s show-stopping PureSight displays that set a new standard of premium features for a sharper, faster, more realistic, Eyesafe-certified visual experience. The Yoga Slim line stands for premium, portable performance – empowering users to adapt to hybrid living through smarter performance, sensing, security, and recognition capabilities – all made possible by the Lenovo A.I. Engine+.
This A.I. engine’s smart performance can anticipate the user’s power or battery needs based on what they’re doing, while Lenovo Intelligent Sense and Integrated Security – also part of Lenovo A.I. Wacom Intros Cintiq Pro 27 Pen Display in the Region
Wacom has launched the Wacom Cintiq Pro 27 pen display designed for harmony in a premium launch event held in the UAE’s first digital art theatre ToDA in Dubai. Cintiq Pro 27 is a creative instrument defined and developed by members of the global art and design community in conjunction with Wacom’s product teams to deliver the most immersive and stable pen-on-screen experience to date.
Purpose-built for creative professionals such as 2D illustrators, 3D modelers, animators, game developers, virtual production artists, and so on, the Cintiq Pro 27’s large digital canvas offers seamless interaction with creative software applications and provides the comfort and ease of use synonymous with all Wacom devices. The new 27-inch Cintiq Pro represents a major step forward in virtually all categories that matter to digital pen display users, such as improved pen performance and multi-touch, better ergonomics, faster refresh rates, vivid and accurate color as well as a focus on comfort and custom options.
Additionally, users will appreciate the modern look, lightweight and thin 27” screen that sports a smaller footprint than its Cintiq Pro 24 sibling. Wacom’s latest pen display joins the Cintiq Pro 16 and Cintiq Pro 24 models to form a comprehensive range of sizes for every need and workspace.
“The emphasis on cloud computing and the dependencies placed on professional freelance and studio artists to collaborate freely, quickly, and efficiently on a global scale requires a multi-tasking, do-it-all creative tool,” says Faik Karaoglu, Executive Vice President of Wacom’s Branded Business Group. “With the new Wacom Cintiq Pro 27 creative professionals can count on intuitive and natural-feeling pen and touch input, extremely accurate, factory-calibrated color, faster refresh, and other design features that allow users to comfortably and confidently produce and share work across the creative pipeline.”
The pen-on-screen experience on the Cintiq Pro 27 has been vastly improved with the introduction of the Pro Pen 3. Users now have the ability to change the weight, barrel size, and center of gravity of the pen with interchangeable components that come with the pen. In addition, the Pro Pen 3 has enhanced tilt recognition and still features Wacom’s renowned EMR (Electro-Magnetic Resonance) technology with 8,192 levels of pressure and battery-free operation.
Multi-touch also comes standard and is extremely valuable for an artist’s non-dominant hand when working in programs, especially 3D applications, requiring one to pinch, zoom and rotate a model or sculpture while working with the pen. For those working in a virtual production environment, the ten-point selective touch allows users to precisely manipulate on-screen sliders and other navigable features for an extremely efficient workflow.
The Cintiq Pro 27’s new display features virtually no parallax and latency with a much-improved refresh rate of 120Hz, allowing the cursor to track twice as fast as previous models. It is equipped with HLG (hybrid log-gamma) and the PQ (perceptual quantization) curve for displaying and editing HDR (high dynamic range) video content. Delivering brilliant 4k resolution in 10-bit colour, 98% DCI-P3 (Digital Cinema Initiatives – Protocol 3), the film industry’s color standard, as well as 99% Adobe RGB colour accuracy, users will delight in the fidelity of the display and the true-to-life visual experience.
The display is not only Pantone validated, but also Pantone SkinTone validated, meeting the Pantone standard for accurately displaying the entire range of human skin tones. For users that enjoy moving their most commonly used keyboard shortcuts closer to their actual workspace, grip-style ExpressKeys, eight in total, four on each side, have been added to the back of the display for easy, ergonomic access.
The Cintiq’s new stand matches the modern, sleek design of the new pen display. It’s fully adjustable to meet virtually any working position and even supports +/- 20 degrees of screen rotation. For users seeking another stand option, the display does have VESA mounts for other OEM stands. “Professional content creators in media and entertainment, industrial design and education can all benefit from a tool that’s fit to work the way they want to work,” concluded Karaoglu. “Whether illustrating in 2D, sculpting in 3D, or building a virtual production solution, everyone has their own way of working and we are excited to be introducing the Cintiq Pro 27 to the creative community.”
