Sonos Voice Control Aims to Connect Listeners to the Content They Love

In an exclusive interview with Gadget Voize, Jo Dureau, the Vice President for Voice Experience at Sonos, speaks about Sonos Voice Control and key innovations the company has launched into the market
What is Sonos Voice Control? What does it do?
Sonos Voice Control is an entirely new voice experience that delivers fast, accurate hands-free control of your music and your Sonos system with unmatched privacy. Designed to effortlessly connect listeners to the content they love, Sonos Voice Control delivers the Sonos app experience using only your voice.
Using your voice is the simplest, most natural way to control your music, yet many choose not to use voice assistants due to privacy concerns. Sonos Voice Control will fill this gap for those customers, while also giving those using other voice assistants the option to use a focused voice assistant custom-designed for their music and their Sonos system.
Sonos Voice Control provides customers with the reliability and privacy reassurance that they are seeking while allowing them the option to use a focused voice assistant that is custom designed for their music and their Sonos system without compromising any of their personal data. The Sonos voice engine processes your voice and understands your requests entirely on the speaker.
No audio or transcript is sent to the cloud, stored, listened to, or read by anyone, so all your conversations will remain private. Sonos Voice Control is trained on voluntary data from sources like Sonos Beta to continue to improve voice recognition and key features. Sonos Voice Control collects usage data such as IP address and language preference, system data such as product type, grouping settings, and the names of music services.
This data is necessary for the product to be able to request music from your music services and to serve it to the right speaker at the right volume. You can use the new voice experience on Sonos to play music, group speakers, move music around your home, and more. It is also able to control the playback of your home theater system, including play, pause, volume and turning on night mode, and speech enhancement. A full list of Sonos Voice Control actions can be found on our support page, or by saying, “Hey Sonos, what can you do?”.
When will this feature upgrade be rolled out and when will it be available in the MEA region?
Sonos Voice Control is available in US English as of June 1, French will follow later. What’s important to keep in mind is that Sonos Voice Control initially is optimized for US English speakers, who can use the service regardless of their location. We’ll share more on upcoming languages in due course.
How will this feature be available to voice-capable Sonos speakers? Is it through a firmware upgrade?
You can activate Sonos Voice Control on all voice-capable Sonos products and can control all other Sonos products in your system through any of these supported speakers. As with all service and feature updates, we strive to make new updates backward compatible whenever possible. At launch, Sonos Voice Control works with Sonos Radio, Amazon Music, Apple Music, Deezer, and Pandora.

What are Sonos’ plans for the Middle East and Africa region, both in terms of products and its presence in the region?
Earlier this year in May 2022, Sonos physically arrived in the region with the launch of its first flagship store in Dubai, UAE. We opened doors at the iconic Mall of The Emirates with a new space that offers a multi-sensory experience to fully immerse customers in the easy-to-use Sonos sound system. Sound enthusiasts and tech-savvy are now able to visit the store and find a wide range of trusted and premium products that show how easy it is to discover and connect.
This new store experience in Dubai shows a big opportunity in the Middle East and we believe that we can serve our customers’ audio needs in all the places and spaces they live. We remain committed to launching at least two new products every year and continue to focus on creating great products, innovating on our industry-leading sound experience platform, delivering new experiences for customers, and making it easier than ever for customers to enjoy listening on Sonos.

Dual Driver Audio and Noise-free Clear Calls, HUAWEI FreeBuds 6 are Mid-range Earbuds with Premium Chops

Huawei is making a bold new statement with the FreeBuds 6. These open-fit earbuds promise a rich tapestry of notes and immersive bass with an open-fit design, all made possible thanks to an innovative dual-driver system. But what strikes the notes is not just the sound itself. The striking new design and the incredibly impressive call clarity launches these new earbuds to the top spot in the market.
Being the first open-fit earbuds to incorporate a dual-driver unit is no small accomplishment. Huawei has evidently grappled with the conundrum of fitting a sophisticated dual-driver architecture into a compact, lightweight form factor. The payoff is a remarkable, earbuds that are notably smaller than many conventional in-ear earbuds but sound unreal.
Their approach has been meticulous. It stacks high and low frequency dual-magnetic high-sensitivity driver units in a small space. The acoustic system is designed to work independently for a pure, distortion-free sound quality. Bolstering the low-end frequencies is a dedicated booming bass system powered by an 11mm dual-magnetic driver unit augmented by the new Bass Turbo 2.0 technology. The UHF planar diaphragm driver has a wider high-frequency range and can reach 48 kHz. Each unit operates in tandem, each focusing on its optimal frequency band to deliver a cohesive and high-definition acoustic experience.
Beyond music, Huawei has placed a strong emphasis on call quality, especially in challenging environments. The FreeBuds 6 introduce a Voice Pick-up Unit bone conduction microphone. This works to deliver highly accurate voice recognition, isolating your speech even amidst a cacophony. This allows for crystal-clear audio calling even with wind speeds up to 8m/s. So, whether you’re on a blustery commute, cycling through the city, or navigating a bustling airport terminal, both you and the person on the other end will be able to have clear communication without unwelcome interruptions. Adding a touch of convenient innovation, the FreeBuds 6 also support head movement interaction, allowing users to answer or reject calls by simply nodding or shaking their head.
One of the inherent trade-offs with open-fit earbuds is often a lack of noise isolation compared to their sealed in-ear counterparts. However, the FreeBuds 6 are capable of reducing external noise interference in everyday settings like offices, cafes, parks, and squares. This allows users to immerse themselves in music or focus fully on their calls, while balancing between situational awareness and focused listening.
The design of the HUAWEI FreeBuds 6 is both fashionable and functional, featuring a curved water droplet shape. This smooth, streamlined design is engineered for an ergonomic fit across a wide range of ear shapes. The stem’s thickness gradient ensures both smoothness and comfort, while the handle maintains the graceful droplet shape, making them unique and recognisable. Compared to previous editions, each FreeBuds 6 earbud stem is reportedly 9% lighter and 12% smaller, making them feel feather-light on the ears and suitable for all-day use.
Battery life is a crucial factor for any wireless earbuds. The HUAWEI FreeBuds 6 boast a superb all-day power capacity, offering up to a whopping 36 hours of music playback with the charging case. For those in a hurry, a quick 5-minute charge is said to provide 2.5 hours of music playback, easily enough to cover an intercity commute.
The FreeBuds 6 present a compelling package, particularly for those who prioritise comfort and call quality without wanting to be completely sealed off from their surroundings. The FreeBuds 6 provide a good middle ground for users who want to stay aware of their environment while still enjoying audio immersion.

HUAWEI Intros Open-Ear FreeArc Earbuds

Huawei has launched its latest audio innovation, the HUAWEI FreeArc, further solidifying its leadership in the fast-growing open-ear wearables segment. Designed for comfort and situational awareness, the FreeArc offers a secure, pressure-free fit without blocking the ear canal—catering to users who demand high-quality audio without sacrificing awareness of their surroundings.
Open-ear earbuds, which sit outside the ear rather than inside it, have surged in popularity due to their comfort and safety benefits, particularly for fitness enthusiasts, commuters, and professionals. According to Canalys, global shipments of open-ear headphones reached nearly 8 million units in Q3 2024—a staggering fourfold increase from the same period last year.
Huawei has been at the forefront of this shift. The company ranked first in global wearable shipments for the first three quarters of 2024 (IDC), backed by its extensive audio R&D network—including seven research centers, over 1,000 audio specialists, and more than 250 patents. Its first open-ear model, the HUAWEI FreeClip, has already surpassed 2 million units shipped worldwide, demonstrating strong consumer demand for innovative wearable audio solutions.
Huawei’s journey in open-ear wearables began in 2019 with its collaboration with Gentle Monster on HUAWEI Eyewear, blending fashion with cutting-edge audio technology. The FreeClip, launched later, marked Huawei’s entry into the Open Wireless Stereo (OWS) category, featuring a flexible C-bridge design for a lightweight, breathable fit.
Now, the FreeArc takes this legacy further as Huawei’s first open-ear earbuds with earhooks. Built with a nickel-titanium alloy frame, the new model enhances stability and adaptability for a wider range of ear shapes while retaining the signature C-bridge comfort. Engineered for active lifestyles, the FreeArc boasts an IP57 rating for dust and water resistance, making it ideal for workouts, travel, and daily commutes. Key enhancements include:
- High-sensitivity drivers for crisp, balanced sound
- Dual-Resonator Antenna for stronger connectivity
- Wind-resistant microphones for clearer calls in outdoor environments
With the FreeArc, Huawei continues to refine its open-ear offerings, combining ergonomic design with practical durability.
