Review: Acer Nitro 5 (AN515-57)

Published

on

Acer’s Nitro series of gaming laptops have long been known for quality, reliability, and performance. The Nitro 5 (AN515-57) is no stranger to this fact, either. Even though the laptop comes packed in a chassis that is made of matte black plastic, it feels very solid and sturdy.

The laptop measures 363-by-255-by-23.9mm in dimension and weighs a hefty 2.30-kgs. The hinges on this one kept the lid firmly in position and the maximum opening angle is about 155 degrees. Even though the laptop is a bit on the heavier side, we were able to open the lid single-handedly.

Upon opening the lid, you come face to face with a 15.6-inch QHD IPS display that offers a resolution of 1920-by-1080 pixels. It also offers a refresh rate of 144Hz, supports 100% of sRGB colours, and offers a peak brightness of 300 nits.

Under the hood, the laptop is powered by the 11th Gen Intel Core i7 11800H processor running at 2.30 GHz. You also get 24GB of RAM and 1TB of PCIe NVMe SSD storage. For graphics, the laptop is equipped with NVidia GeForce RTX 3070 8G-GDDR6.

There is no optical drive, fingerprint reader, or memory card reader. In terms of I/O ports, you get a boatload. This includes one USB 3.2 Gen 2 (up to 10Gbps / DisplayPort / Thunderbolt 4), two USB 3.2 Gen 1, one HDMI 2.1, one Display Port over USB-C, one RJ-45 jack, and one Headphone / Microphone Combo Port.

For wireless connectivity, you get support for WiFi 802.11AX, and Bluetooth 5.0. While a 57Wh Li-ion battery powers the unit, you also get a 180W slim AC Adapter inside the box. Acer sent us a special kit with the device that included a Nitro Headset, a Nitro Mouse, and a Nitro Mousepad.

The illuminated chiclet keyboard on the laptop included concave keys for the letters and number row and flat keys for the function keys and number pad. These keys offered a very good pressure point. The keys were big enough for an excellent gaming session. The multi-touch click pad meanwhile offered a very smooth surface for easy finger gliding. It also offered a very good input response in the corners.

The display of the Nitro 5 was also very good at reproducing colours while playing games and watching content. The screen also showed good response rates. The laptop also comes with an HD Camera – the quality of the images was average. You would want to opt for an external web camera for a better video conferencing and streaming experience.

In order to gauge the real-world performance, we ran a few benchmarks on the device, namely, Geekbench 5, Cinebench R23, and 3DMark Wildlife Extreme. In Geekbench 5, the Acer Nitro 5 (AN515-57) clocked 7347 points. In Cinebench R23 Multicore tests, the device returned 11092 points, while in 3DMark Wildlife Extreme, we clocked 14209 points.

The above scores indicate very good performance. The Acer Nitro 5 (AN515-57) is currently available at a price of AED 2999 onwards. For that price, it offers a large 15.6-inch 144hz display, good mid-range performance, and overall good build quality. The latest Acer Nitro 5 is a good gaming laptop that won’t burn a hole in your pocket.

Marshall MA21 Electric Scooter Review: Convenience on Two Wheels

Published

on

The Marshall MA21 electric scooter carves a niche in the electric scooter market with its focus on portability and ease of use. In this review, let’s deep dive into the MA21’s features, performance, and overall value proposition to help you decide if it’s the right electric scooter for your needs.

First Impressions
Right out of the box, the MA21 strikes you with its compact size. Weighing in at just over 8kg, it’s incredibly lightweight, thanks to its aluminium frame. This makes carrying it on public transport, storing it under your desk, or throwing it in the trunk of your car a breeze. Folding the scooter is a one-step process, making it even more convenient for on-the-go situations.

Performance
The MA21 is equipped with a 24V/200W motor, which is suitable for flat terrains and gentle inclines up to 15 degrees. The MA21 can also support a maximum load of 90 kg. While it won’t win any speed races, it offers a comfortable cruising speed of 23km/hr, perfect for zipping around town or navigating a college campus.

The MA21 also offers a range of 12-15km, when fully charged. And it takes around 3 hours to charge the electric scooter from 0% to 100%. However, strong winds or steeper inclines can affect performance.

Ride Quality
Despite the solid 6-inch wheels, the MA21 offers a surprisingly smooth ride. The spring suspension in the front helps absorb bumps and cracks on paved surfaces. However, it’s important to manage your expectations – for rougher terrain, a scooter with pneumatic tires would be a better choice.

Safety Features
The MA21 comes equipped with a basic set of safety features. The front wheel features an electronic brake, while the rear wheel has a mechanical foot brake. These brakes provide adequate stopping power for the scooter’s speed. Headlights and a taillight ensure visibility in low-light conditions.

Verdict
The Marshall MA21 might not be the most feature-rich electric scooter on the market, but it excels in portability and ease of use. It’s a perfect choice for riders who prioritise a lightweight, convenient, and affordable way to navigate short distances in urban environments.

If you require a scooter for longer distances, or rough terrains, or crave additional features such as a display, you might want to consider alternatives that better suit your needs. However, if you’re looking for a no-frills, convenient, and fun way to get around for short commutes, leisure rides, or navigating a college campus, the Marshall MA21 is a strong contender.
