Review: ASUS ROG Rapture GT6



The ROG Rapture GT6 is the company’s gaming-focused mesh wireless network system. The ASUS ROG Rapture GT6 is available in both black and white versions, sold in packages of one and two units. ASUS sent us the two-pack white model for this review.

Upon opening the box, you will find the two ROG Rapture GT6 units neatly packed side by side, along with a troubleshooting leaflet for devices that may experience issues with the Wi-Fi 6 standard. You also get the power adapters for each unit, a CAT5e network cable, a quick setup guide, and warranty info.

The ASUS ROG Rapture GT6 design is quite good since it takes inspiration from the aesthetic of the Republic of Gamers brand and showcases unique hexagonal patterns. The ROG logo, the tagline “For Those Who Dare,” and “WiFi 6 Gaming Mesh Router” are prominently printed on each unit.

Located on the top of the unit are four of the nine antennas that the ROG Rapture GT6 uses to emit its wireless signal, which is shielded by transparent plastic. Additionally, there are ventilation grids that are both ample in size and efficient in cooling the hardware inside each unit. This mesh Wi-Fi system is capable of transmitting wireless signals across three bands.

Now, this includes one 2.4 GHz band, with a maximum theoretical bandwidth of 574 Mbps, using 2×2 MU-MIMO wireless transmissions. You also get two 5 GHz bands, each with a maximum theoretical bandwidth of 4804 Mbps, and 4×4 MU-MIMO transmissions.

The WPA3 password encryption feature is available, and 160 MHz channels can be enabled on the 5 GHz bands. However, they are not activated by default and must be configured during the setup of the mesh Wi-Fi system.

Setting up the devices is a breeze. You can select one of the units to set up as the primary router, and the other will function automatically as the satellite unit. The hardware is already pre-synced, and both units are members of Asus’s AiMesh ecosystem. Alternatively, you can utilise each unit as a standalone router in a household where a single router is sufficient for wireless connectivity.

The ASUS ROG Rapture GT6 unit comes packed with a three-core Broadcom BCM6753 chip, which operates at 1.5 GHz. You also get 512MB of RAM and 256MB of firmware storage space. On the rear of each unit, you also get a 2.5 Gbps WAN port, three 1 Gbps LAN ports, one USB 3.2 Gen 1 port, the power button, and the power port. One of the LAN ports is a prioritised gaming port. You also get LAN aggregation if you need it.

The WPS button is located on the bottom of the units and can be customised from the firmware to execute other functions. You also get the Reset jack, a label with details about your particular unit, and additional ventilation grids. Additionally, two rubber feet are included to keep the device securely in place on a flat surface.

The GT6 boasts RGB LEDs as one of its standout features. The ROG logo can be illuminated in any colour of your choice and can alternate between various lighting effects. It’s particularly impressive, especially in the dark. If the lighting bothers you while sleeping, you can turn it off using the ASUS Router app on your smartphone or through the firmware of the GT6.

Once the setup is completed, a summary of your settings will be displayed. After selecting Finish, you will be prompted to Enable Remote Connection, giving you the ability to control the ASUS ROG Rapture GT6 from anywhere on the internet. The ASUS Router app is user-friendly and includes most of the tools and configuration options that you may require, including the gaming features.

To access all the features of the ASUS ROG Rapture GT6, you need to log in using the admin password you have set via a web browser. The ASUS ROG Rapture GT6 admin interface is available in 25 languages and provides easy access to help documentation through links to the manual at the bottom of the web interface.

In addition, gamers will appreciate the RGB lighting on the ASUS ROG Rapture GT6, which can be personalised from both the web admin interface and the mobile app. I did not encounter any sort of backhaul stability issues. I was able to connect all my devices to the Wi-Fi without any problems, enjoying good signal strength and satisfactory speed. I also appreciated the stable Wi-Fi 6 transfers on the 5 GHz band.

The download and upload speeds offered by the ASUS ROG Rapture GT6 are very good and it performs exceptionally well with 1 Gbps and 2.5 Gbps Ethernet connections. It also offers a USB 3.2 Gen 1 port, that provides good performance. If you are looking for a mesh system that supports gaming, you should definitely check out the ASUS ROG Rapture GT6.

Review: ASUS ZenWiFi XT9



If you are looking for a highly effective Wi-Fi Mesh system that provides coverage throughout your entire home, then the ASUS ZenWiFi XT9 should be on top of your list. This model is an upgrade from the ASUS ZenWiFi XT8, the first in the ZenWiFi family. One key improvement in the XT9 is the increased speed on the 5GHz band for WiFi clients, now reaching up to 900Mbps.

The ASUS ZenWiFi XT9 mesh system is made up of two ASUS AX7800 tri-band WiFi 6 mesh routers. These feature advanced technologies to provide fast, reliable, and secure WiFi connections for streaming videos, gaming, and seamless connectivity for all your smart IoT devices.

According to ASUS, the ZenWiFi XT9 WiFi 6 mesh system is capable of supporting 160MHz bandwidth, resulting in increased wireless network capacity and speeds. It offers a total bandwidth of up to 7800Mbps, making it up to 2.6 times faster than tri-band AC3000 (WiFi 5) routers.

The ZenWiFi XT9 is available in four variants and two colours. These include a 2-unit white package, a 1-unit white package, a 2-unit black package, and a 1-unit black package. ASUS sent us the 2-unit white package variant for this review.

Inside the box, you get two ASUS AX7800 tri-band WiFi 6 mesh routers, an RJ-45 cable, a couple of power adapters, a warranty card, and a quick start guide. Both the routers come with ports such as one RJ45 for 2.5G BaseT for WAN, three RJ45 ports for Gigabits BaseT for LAN, and a USB 3.2 Gen 1 port.

Setting up a mesh network using the ASUS ZenWiFi XT9 is a walk in the park. All you need to do is download the ASUS Router mobile app, which is available for both Android and iOS devices, and then follow the simple onscreen instructions. If you are using a 2-unit package, one of the units is the main router which needs to be configured first and then you can move on to configuring the second unit.

The ASUS ZenWiFi XT9 works with OK Google or Alexa Skills for hands-free control of your router. The ZenWiFi XT9 performs exceptionally well in terms of speed. Its 5GHz radios have a quoted maximum speed of 4,808 Mbits/sec, though 160MHz is only available on the backhaul band. In our Wi-Fi 5 testing, it was the fastest mesh system overall.

Even in our Wi-Fi 6 testing, the ASUS ZenWiFi XT9 mesh network performed very well. One standout feature of the ZenWiFi nodes is the inclusion of four Gigabit Ethernet ports and a 10Gbits/sec USB socket, which can be used for storage, printing, and modem duties. This level of connectivity is not often seen in mesh products – so kudos to ASUS for including a boatload of connectivity options.

The ASUS ZenWiFi XT9 high-performance Mesh Wi-Fi system is an excellent choice for those seeking a fast mesh network for both wireless clients and the backhaul network.

If you plan to connect the XT9 nodes via WiFi, this model is particularly suitable as it combines the best features of the XT8 (simultaneous triple band) and the XD6 (160MHz channel width on the 5GHz band). Overall, the ASUS ZenWiFi XT9 is a great place to start if you are looking to set up a mesh network at your home.
