Review of the Huawei Matepad 11 (2023) in the UAE

When you think of tablets, Huawei’s Matepad series is one of the devices that come to mind. One of the reasons is that the company has consistently excelled in tablet design, and their expertise shines through with each iteration. The Huawei MatePad 11 (2023) is no exception, boasting a beautifully designed device that offers a comfortable user experience.

While it may seem challenging to go wrong with a glass slab, Huawei consistently delivers in this regard. In landscape mode, you’ll find a front-facing camera positioned above the display. The centerpiece of the Huawei MatePad 11 is undoubtedly its display, a stunning 11-inch panel with sufficient brightness.

Primarily designed for content consumption, the tablet’s 120Hz refresh rate enhances the smoothness of menu scrolling. Gamers will also appreciate this feature, as compatible games can take full advantage of the higher refresh rate. With a weight of just 480 grams and a slimness of 7.2mm, the tablet is impressively lightweight and effortlessly portable.

Running Huawei’s proprietary operating system, HarmonyOS 3.1, the tablet offers a seamless and optimised user experience. It provides ample storage options, with choices of either 128GB or 256GB capacity, and the flexibility to expand storage further using microSDXC cards.

The variant we received came with 6GB of RAM and 128GB of onboard storage. Under the hood, the tablet is powered by an octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 870 SoC processor. The tablet’s 11-inch display also boasts a resolution of 2560-by-1600 pixels, ensuring crystal-clear visuals with vibrant colours that truly pop.

The Huawei FullView Display enhances the tablet’s aesthetic appeal. With a flat front and rear design, the device achieves an impressive screen-to-body ratio of 86%, ensuring a captivating visual experience from every angle. To deliver a laptop-like user experience, the Huawei MatePad 11 offers the option to connect external detachable keyboards and mice.

When a mouse is connected, the screen displays an arrow cursor instead of the typical dot cursor. The company also sent us the Smart Keyboard along with the Matepad 11. This Smart Keyboard case offers impressive features to enhance your productivity.

The smart detachable keyboard supports both laptop form and split form, providing greater flexibility for different working gestures. The keys offer a comfortable and responsive typing experience with 1.5mm high key travel and 15mm key caps, ensuring ease even during extended usage.

The keyboard includes a dedicated holder for the Huawei M-Pencil, offering a convenient storage option for the stylus. Additional keys, such as Fn keys, and support for 40 shortcut combinations, enhance efficiency. An independent Esc key is also present for easy access.

The MatePad 11 also introduces the Multi-Window feature, which allows for seamless collaboration and interactivity between different apps and tasks. This feature has been further enhanced for user convenience, allowing effortless operation of split-screen and floating window functionalities with a simple swipe.

You can swipe to the upper left-hand corner to split the screen when an app occupies the entire screen. You can then swipe to the upper right-hand corner to activate the floating window. In addition, you can swipe up again to enter full-screen mode. Swiping towards the sides will activate the App Bubble and swiping down will exit the floating window.

The MatePad 11 also simplifies file and document management through its SuperHub function. This feature eliminates the need for third-party apps and streamlines the process of transferring materials between devices. You can effortlessly drag and drop files, pictures, texts, and more onto the SuperHub, making them instantly accessible on all devices, including smartphones, tablets, and computers.

Initially, the content is stored in a temporary function called “cards,” which can then be easily transferred to desired devices or apps with a single tap. SuperHub creates a unified platform where users can conveniently store and retrieve files across various devices, effectively eliminating the possibility of duplicates and ensuring a seamless file management experience. Please note, however, that the SuperHub functionality is available exclusively on select Huawei PCs that run PC Manager 13.0.3 or later versions. Additionally, certain Huawei phones and tablets running HarmonyOS 3 or newer also support SuperHub.

The Huawei MatePad 11 also boasts an exceptional audio experience with its quad-speaker large-amplitude sound system. Enhanced by the upgraded Huawei Histen 8.0, the tablet’s audio output is finely tuned and adaptable to various scenarios. Collaborating with the Ultra-Bass and sound field extension algorithm optimization, Huawei Histen 8.0 ensures immersive sound quality.

The quad-speaker large-amplitude setup consists of full-frequency speakers and a smart PA (Power Amplifier) with a maximum output power of 5W. This enables the MatePad 11 to produce sound volumes of up to 80dB, creating a powerful audio experience.

Additionally, the tablet incorporates sound field optimization, where two speakers on opposite sides are enhanced by visualization algorithms. This combination creates an expansive sound field, allowing users to perceive sound variations in distance and enjoy a more immersive audio experience.

Another important feature this tablet offers is the ability to connect multiple wireless earbuds simultaneously using the Huawei AI Life app. The app provides a convenient platform for managing the devices connected to the earbuds. To initiate the connection, users can simply tap the Huawei MatePad 11 icon within the Huawei AI Life app. Once connected, you can dive into your movie experience with the earbuds, enjoying high-quality audio and immersive sound on your tablet. This feature, however, is only supported on the Huawei Freebuds Pro 2.

The tablet is equipped with a 7250 mAh Li-Po battery, supporting 22.5W wired charging and 5W reverse charging. It is available in a range of attractive colour options, including Blue, Black, White, and Purple. The variant we received was Graphite Black.

The Huawei MatePad 11 does not support SIM connectivity. In terms of the camera setup, the tablet features a single 13MP rear camera with an aperture of f/1.8 for capturing photos and videos, while an 8MP selfie lens with an aperture of f/2.0 is located on the front screen for self-portraits and video calls.

The overall performance of the device was very good. Whether we used it for work or play, the Huawei Matepad 11 (2023) performed consistently. The quality of the photos and videos shot using the rear camera of the tablet was also quite good. Video calls using the front-facing camera also were sharp and crisp.

The Huawei MatePad 11 is now available with the Huawei Keyboard case for a price of AED 1599. That’s a great price for a very capable tablet that also offers excellent performance and loads of value-added features. If you are looking for a tablet that can help you be productive while on the go, the Huawei Matepad 11 is definitely an option to consider.

Apple Detects Spyware Targeting iPhones in Multiple Countries

Apple has issued a second spyware attack warning to iPhone users in 98 countries, raising concerns about the growing threat to mobile security. This follows a similar alert in April targeting users in 92 countries.

While specific details about the latest attacks remain under wraps, the alert serves as a stark reminder of the evolving threat landscape. India is one confirmed country where users received the notification.

Spyware, a particularly invasive type of malware, can grant attackers complete access to an iPhone, including encrypted messages, audio, and video. The notorious Pegasus spyware from NSO Group is a well-known example.

“Apple detected that you are being targeted by a mercenary spyware attack that is trying to remotely compromise the iPhone associated with your Apple ID -xxx-,” Apple wrote in its new spyware alert.

Adding to the concern, researchers recently revealed the return of LightSpy, a “particularly dangerous” campaign capable of pinpointing a target’s location with “near-perfect accuracy.”

The worrying aspect of these attacks is their ability to exploit “zero-click” vulnerabilities, meaning infection can occur without any user interaction, such as opening a malicious link or attachment.

This highlights the importance of remaining vigilant and following Apple’s security recommendations, which may include updating your device to the latest iOS version.
