Review of the MG HS PHEV (2023) in the UAE

The SAIC-owned manufacturer has made notable improvements to the SUV, including a more prominent beltline, a stylish and deeper front bumper, and a wider grille. Additionally, the multifunction LED headlights have been enlarged, further elevating the model’s status as a flagship offering.

We took the new MG HS PHEV for a test drive over a weekend, thanks to Inter Emirates Motors, MG’s dealer in the UAE. The redesign of the MG HS PHEV brings extensive changes to its appearance. The front end showcases a completely revamped grille, headlights, and bumper, while the rear now features twin exhaust tips and LED rear lights. The inclusion of new 18-inch wheels as a standard feature across the lineup further enhances its overall look.

On the exterior, the prominent grille, adorned with the iconic MG badge, and sleek LED headlights with integrated daytime running lights not only improve visibility but also add an elegant touch to its overall aesthetics.

The sculpted body displays sleek lines and meticulously crafted contours, exuding a sense of fluidity and athleticism. From the stylish 18-inch diamond-cut alloy wheels to the rear LED tail lamp and integrated charging port, every element has been carefully designed to enhance stability, form, and function.

The entry-level trim of the MG model offers multifunction LED headlights with front and rear scrolling indicators. On the other hand, the top-tier LUX specification elevates the experience with leather upholstery, ambient lighting, and dual-zone climate control. Both models feature a new 10.1-inch infotainment system, which MG claims offers smoother functionality.

Additionally, the car boasts soft-touch materials that are perceived to be of higher quality than those found in the previous model, enhancing the overall luxurious feel.

The company has also packed in a comprehensive list of safety features from the MG Pilot suite, including an Anti-Lock Braking System, rain sensing wiper, 6 airbags, front collision warning and autonomous emergency braking, lane keeping assistance, blind spot detection, traffic jam assist, intelligent headlamp control, adaptive cruise control, and front and rear sensors.

The menu layout of MG’s infotainment system is straightforward and user-friendly. The display resolution is also quite good and we did not encounter any lags or stutters while navigating through multiple on-screen options. You also get support for Android Auto and Apple CarPlay.

Under the hood, the MG HS PHEV is powered by a 1.5-litre turbocharged engine with a fuel tank capacity of 37 litres. You also get 258 HP of power and 480 Nm of torque. In addition, since this is a plug-in hybrid SUV, the 1.5-litre petrol engine is paired with a 16.6 kw Ternary lithium battery. This setup provides an electric-only range of about 60 km.

One of the most notable surprises with the HS PHEV is its rear section. It offers an impressive amount of legroom, accommodating individuals over 6 feet tall comfortably even when seated behind another person of the same height.

The low window line prevents any feeling of confinement in the back. It’s evident that MG has prioritised rear passenger comfort. In addition, you also get a rear storage capacity of 463 litres.

The overall ride quality was very good, as was the mileage, thanks to the marriage of the 1.5-litre turbo engine with the Ternary lithium battery, which can also be charged up using a plug-in charger. The MacPherson strut front suspension and multi-link rear suspension are geared towards providing a comfortable ride. The steering was also consistent throughout our review period.

The MG HS PHEV boasts an impressively long electric range of 60 km, making it an excellent choice for cost-conscious families if they can consistently charge it overnight. Having the flexibility of extended driving ranges with both petrol and electricity provides a sense of security, which is one of the key advantages of a plug-in hybrid vehicle.

EVLAB Intros UAE’s First Electric Vehicle Marketplace App

EVLAB, the multi-brand electric vehicle start-up, has made adopting a sustainable lifestyle easier for drivers in the UAE with the launch of the EVLAB App, an all-in-one mobility app to rent, lease and host their EVs in the UAE with phase 2 to include buy and sell electric vehicles (EVs) available in the Middle East. EVLAB’s new one-stop marketplace app addresses a growing desire among consumers in the Middle East to make a switch to sustainable mobility solutions. Electric vehicle sales have seen rapid growth in the region, with an increase of 72 per cent during 2020 alone.

In line with the goals of COP28, EVLAB is committed to reducing CO2 emissions and fostering sustainable mobility in the Middle East, striving to play a pivotal role in catalyzing positive transformation. The new platform supports the UAE’s Net Zero 2050 strategic initiative, which is a national drive to achieve net-zero emissions and make the Emirates the first nation in the MENA region to do so. The app also complements other sustainability initiatives in the country, including the Dubai Green Mobility Strategy 2030, which has resulted in the installation of more than 1,000 public charging stations across the UAE.

The EVLAB App allows eco-conscious drivers to browse a unique collection of electric vehicle brands available in the Middle East and take advantage of EVLAB’s expertise to understand the benefits of electric vehicles and make a seamless transition to sustainable transportation. Drivers can consider short-term rentals, leasing or hosting their electric vehicles through a seamless and hassle-free user journey.

The booking process is straightforward with easy navigation using the rent, lease, host and chat tabs on the homepage. Users can filter options based on brand preferences and features, such as performance and range, to save time and effort in finding an electric vehicle that suits their requirements and budget. All the listed cars and their hosts are vetted to guarantee authenticity and quality of service by the owners. In phase 2, electric vehicle owners can also conveniently sell their vehicles on the platform with guidance from EVLAB’s experts at every step of the way.

“With the accelerated pace of climate change, the adoption and transition to e-mobility is inevitable. At EVLAB, our ongoing goal is to consistently reduce emissions, and we are proud to say that we have successfully saved a cumulative total of 76,174 kilograms of CO2 to date and will further reduce with the EVLAB app. The all-in-one EVLAB App complements our EVLAB website with a broader range of functionality and services to make the eco-mobility journey easier for drivers in the region. The app allows users to rent, lease and host their electric vehicles seamlessly in a safe and trusted marketplace. As battery technology is rapidly evolving, the range of electric vehicles today will become obsolete in two to three years, so this model of renting and leasing becomes more attractive than buying. Consumers will have the additional ease of choosing their preferred electric vehicle based on their budget and lifestyle by selecting from a variety of options, including performance, acceleration, range, and charging times,” said Kevin Chalhoub, CEO and Founder of EVLAB.
