Review of the LG CineBeam HU915QB 4K Laser UST Projector in the UAE

Published

on

LG is a leading manufacturer of flat-panel TVs, and hence, it understands the craving for a more immersive cinematic experience. The company introduced the new HU915QB, which is part of its Cinebeam series of ultra-short-throw 4K DLP projectors. The HU915QB uses a multi-channel laser light source, reproducing nearly 100% of the DCI-P3 colour space and delivering a stunning brightness of up to 3000 ANSI lumens.

Priced at AED 17,300, this projector is targeted towards those seeking a TV replacement, offering not only a spectacular visual experience but also a top-notch sound system and all the smart features found in LG’s smart flat-panel TVs. The latest version of LG’s WebOS transforms the HU915QB into a truly smart projector, granting access to a wide range of apps and capabilities, including support for online streaming platforms such as Netflix and Amazon Prime.

You can also use the power of Google Assistant to effortlessly control not only the projector but also a range of compatible smart home devices, from lights to blinds, using just your voice. The HU915QB’s 3-channel (RBB) laser light source expands the projector’s colour gamut and effectively eliminates the rainbow effect common in many DLP projectors with spinning phosphor wheels.

The larger 0.66-inch Digital Micromirror Device (DMD) chip enhances native contrast and image sharpness, surpassing the smaller 0.47-inch DMD chips used in other 4K UHD DLP projectors. The Adaptive Contrast feature ensures each scene enjoys superb contrast, resulting in an impressive 2,000,000:1 contrast ratio when combined with precise laser dimming.

The HU915QB also supports both HDR10 and HLG formats. The Dynamic HDR Tone Mapping feature automatically fine-tunes dark and bright levels, guaranteeing the best picture quality and optimised HDR performance. In addition, the laser light source used within the projectors has been built to last up to a whopping 20,000 hours of nearly maintenance-free usage.

The LG HU915QB effortlessly brings your content to life, projecting a vivid and precise image on a 100- or 120-inch UST screen, even in moderate ambient light. When you dim the lights, the projector’s high contrast, skilful HDR handling, and exceptional detail rendition combine to deliver an immersive home theatre-like viewing experience that will leave you captivated.

With a wide range of preconfigured picture modes for both SDR and HDR, the HU915QB offers versatility and ease of use. Whether you’re watching daytime sports in the living room or enjoying a movie in a darkened room with the lights off, the projector’s picture modes allow for quick and convenient configuration. It also worked great for our gaming sessions. The images produced by this UST projector are visually stunning and realistic, even without calibration, thus offering a great viewing experience.

The LG HU915QB sports a familiar design akin to its predecessor, the LG HU915QE, featuring a sleek black chassis with clean lines and a squared-off appearance. Its front is adorned with a cloth trim covering its internal speaker system, adding a touch of elegance. The sides are thoughtfully louvred vertically to ensure efficient cooling during operation.

One notable aspect is the smooth area around the lens where the RGB lasers are housed and exit the projector. The top of the HU915QB boasts a manually operated thumbwheel, allowing for easy focus adjustment. The spring-loaded cover plate keeps it securely in place to prevent accidental movement after calibration. However, it’s worth noting that the projector lacks electronic, menu-driven motorised lens controls, similar to its sibling, the HU915QE.

When it comes to size, this UST projector follows the trend of its higher-end 4K Laser counterparts. Measuring 127.00-by-681.92-by-347.98 mm and weighing 12 kgs, the HU915QB presents itself as a substantial unit, fitting in with the larger form factor of other projectors in its category.

The HU915QB offers a great selection of nine preset picture modes for SDR and seven presets for HDR, catering to various viewing preferences. The CINEMA, FILMMAKER MODE, and EXPERT modes impressed right out of the box. Particularly, the EXPERT (BRIGHT SPACE, DAYTIME) and FILMMAKER modes stood out with their remarkable accuracy, aligning closely with the desired colour temperature of 6,500K.

Moving on to HDR, the CINEMA and CINEMA HOME modes proved to be the most accurate picture presets. Overall, the HU915QB’s preset picture modes deliver a satisfying visual experience, leaving most users content with the picture quality.

Out-of-the-box SDR colour reproduction on the HU915QB was commendable. Given that TV shows and live broadcasts will continue to be produced in HD for several more years, reliable 4K upscaling remains crucial. Thankfully, LG’s expertise in upscaling shined through, as the HU915QB excelled at upscaling content, resulting in impressive image quality regardless of the source resolution.

Whether enjoying movies and TV shows from platforms such as Netflix and Amazon Prime to indulging in gaming content through the Xbox gaming console, the visual performance remained top-notch. The projector’s quality optics and adjustable focus ensured sharp detail across the entire screen, irrespective of the content being displayed.

Similar to LG’s flat-panel TVs, the HU915QB’s video processor, efficiently handles dynamic tone mapping for HDR10 content. This feature masterfully balanced onscreen brightness while preserving highlight detail, contributing to a very good HDR picture quality that rivals superior Laser TV models. All in all, the HU915QB delivers an exceptional visual experience, making it a standout choice for discerning home theatre enthusiasts.

The LG HU915QB CineBeam projector boasts an integrated 2.2 Channel, 40W speaker system, elevating your viewing experience with powerful and immersive audio. Unlike most other UST projectors, this sound system delivers rich sound that rivals external soundbars. The projector also comes with the classic Magic Remote, which is included with LG’s higher-end displays. It features a convenient jog wheel at the centre of directional buttons, quick access buttons for essential functions, and numeric keys at the top. This user-friendly remote ensures effortless navigation.

Continuing the legacy of its predecessor, the HU915QB maintains three HDMI ports, providing ample connectivity options for your devices. However, it’s worth noting that LG decided to exclude the coaxial RF cable/antenna F-Type connection. Although the projector delivers an incredible image, some enthusiasts might find it surprising that LG didn’t fully utilize the 40 Gbps bandwidth available in HDMI 2.1, which could have unlocked features like 4K/120Hz and other gaming enhancements.

Nonetheless, the HU915QB excels in displaying astonishing image quality, especially in shadow details and scenes with a mix of bright and dark content on the screen. Its outstanding contrast attributes, combined with image depth, sharpness, and detail from the superior lens system, make it a compelling choice for anyone seeking an exceptional projector for their home theatre setup.

As such, everyone is eager to see what Huawei has in store, amidst the wide array of choices available with high expectations for innovative features and cutting-edge technologies for their next smart device purchase.

New HUAWEI WATCH GT series on the horizon?
One of the major highlights of the upcoming launch event is the anticipation of the HUAWEI WATCH GT 5 series. The new series is expected to feature the recently unveiled HUAWEI TruSense System, which promises to enhance health and fitness tracking with more precise and comprehensive data. Introduced in August, the HUAWEI TruSense System also support emotional health-related functions, a potential game-changer in wearable tech. And there is speculation that the new HUAWEI WATCH GT 5 series will incorporate this feature.

When it comes to design, the new HUAWEI WATCH GT 5 series is expected to prioritise fashion and versatility. Teasers on Huawei’s social media have hinted at sharp-edged geometric designs crafted from premium materials, like metallic titanium alloy and white ceramic, promising a stylish and innovative design.

The Next Swing For Ultimate
Another anticipated release is the new edition of the HUAWEI WATCH Ultimate, which, based on teasers, is expected to introduce features focused on golf.
