Review: Samsung Galaxy S23 FE (2023)

Samsung has brought back the Fan Edition for 2023, after skipping it last year. The company sent the new Samsung Galaxy S23 FE for a test drive and boy, we are impressed! So, inside the box, you get the usual Samsung stuff – the phone, a USB-C cable, a SIM tool, and leaflets. No charger is included. Samsung sent us the Cream variant of the device, which is very subtle to look at. Other colourways include Purple, Mint, Graphite, and Indigo.
Design and Build Quality
The S23 FE incorporates numerous features typically found in Samsung’s Galaxy S23 phones while making cost-effective adjustments to reach the lower price point it is available. This device effectively bridges the gap in Samsung’s product range, positioning itself between the Galaxy A54 and the Galaxy S23.
While the S23 FE carries the Galaxy S23 name, it also shares a familiar design with its flagship sibling. You’ll find a flat glass back, a Gorilla Glass touchscreen, an aluminium frame, and distinct camera cutouts in the top left corner. The frame and screen corners are rounded, while the buttons, speaker, and USB-C ports maintain their positions.
However, there are a few changes, too. This includes the relocation of the 5G window and the SIM card tray moving from the bottom to the top. While the Galaxy S23 boasts a matte glass back and a shiny chrome frame, the S23 FE opts for a matte brushed aluminium frame and a mirror-like backplate. It’s worth noting that the S23 FE is slightly heavier than the Galaxy S23 and S23+, but that isn’t a big deal. You still get a brilliantly designed device that looks and feels premium.
Display
The S23 FE’s 6.4-inch 1,080p Dynamic 2X AMOLED display strikes a perfect balance, wedged between the more compact 6.1-inch screen of the standard Galaxy S23 and the larger 6.6-inch display of the Galaxy S23 Plus. Personally, I’m quite a fan of phones in this size range; they offer an expansive viewing experience without turning your pocket into a phone-exclusive zone. What’s more, the S23 FE’s display features a dynamic refresh rate of up to 120Hz, giving you smooth visuals, and there’s even an option to activate an ever-present always-on display. It’s all about finding that sweet spot for the perfect smartphone experience.
The screens boast full support for the DCI-P3 colour gamut, making them exceptionally vibrant and delivering the most vivid smartphone colours. However, it’s worth noting that the S23 FE’s display might not exhibit the same level of vibrancy as the S23. Additionally, the display dazzles with a peak brightness of up to 1450 nits, ensuring visibility remains impeccable even in the brightest sunlight.
One key difference between the Galaxy S23 series and the Galaxy S23 FE is the absence of an LTPO switch in the latter, which means the FE’s display maintains a fixed 60Hz refresh rate to save battery, compared to the dynamic 120Hz of the S23. While the S23 FE’s display is slightly less bright than the premium S23 series, the variance is generally imperceptible unless you’re making a direct comparison. Even in bright outdoor settings, the Galaxy S23 FE offers practical visibility.
Software
The software closely resembles the Galaxy S23, featuring a rich set of features and user-friendly navigation once configured to your liking. Out of the box, the phone comes with Android 13 and Samsung’s One UI 5.1 interface. It boasts DeX mode, a desktop-optimized view that allows you to connect the S23 FE to a monitor, a feature not found on the Galaxy A54. Similar to other Galaxy S phones, it’s set to receive four years of Android software updates and five years of security updates.
Camera
The Galaxy S23 FE comes packed with substantial camera upgrades. It boasts a robust 50MP primary rear camera, a significant improvement from the 12MP shooters in earlier FE models. Additionally, it features an 8MP camera with 3x optical zoom and a 12MP ultra-wide camera.
In well-lit conditions, the Galaxy S23 FE delivers outstanding photo quality. The images and videos shot using it showcased impressive detail and true-to-life colours. By default, photos are captured as 12MP shots, but you have the option to switch to 50MP for enhanced detail in landscape shots. The phone’s vibrant colour rendering is an advantage in many scenarios, while the HDR performance was also very consistent as seen in the samples below:
Performance
In most markets, the Galaxy S23 FE features the Exynos 2200 chipset, with the United States getting the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1. Remarkably, despite the Exynos chip, the device delivers commendable performance, effortlessly tackling most tasks. You also get 8GB of RAM and 128GB of storage.

3D Mark Benchmark Results
In my Geekbench 6 and 3DMark tests, the phone passed with flying colours. It handles most tasks effortlessly and remains cool during use, courtesy of its larger vapour chamber. Even during extended gaming sessions, it maintains high frame rates without a hitch. Games such as Asphalt 9 and Call of Duty Mobile run smoothly on medium settings, maintaining a consistent frame rate of 45-60fps without any hiccups.

Geek Bench Benchmark Results
Battery
The Galaxy S23 FE boasts a larger 4,500mAh battery compared with the regular Galaxy S23’s 3,900mAh. The Galaxy S23 FE supports wired USB-C charging at speeds of up to 25W and wireless charging at speeds of up to 15W. It managed to last a little more than a day without needing a recharge. In my 30-minute charging test, the 25W charger boosted the battery from 5% to 59%.
Verdict
The Galaxy S23 FE is a fantastic choice for those seeking a higher-end Samsung phone without breaking the bank. It’s a significant upgrade, especially for someone transitioning from a Samsung Galaxy A series or another similar device. You’ll also experience a noticeable speed boost, and the photography capabilities will take a noteworthy step forward. The Samsung Galaxy S23 FE thus comes across as highly recommended.

The sleek, cylindrical form factor exudes a premium feel, with a robust build that instils confidence in its durability. The device is constructed from high-quality materials, combining a rugged plastic exterior with a metal grille covering the speakers.
While it may be a bit bulky to be truly ‘portable’, it’s perfect for shuffling between rooms or taking out into your garden. It’s available in Black, White, and Olive colours – for this review, we received the Olive colour variant.
The SONOS Move 2 retains the signature carry handle from its predecessor, making it easy to transport. The handle is both functional and stylish, adding a touch of sophistication to the overall design. The device maintains its IP56 rating for weather resistance, ensuring it can withstand dust, water splashes, and the occasional drizzle – a feature that enhances its suitability for outdoor use.
Portability
True to its name, the Move 2 is designed for portability. Weighing in at just under 3 kg, it strikes a balance between being lightweight enough for easy transport and heavy enough to communicate a sense of sturdiness. The carry handle, in addition to its aesthetic appeal, provides a secure grip, making it comfortable to carry around.
The Move 2’s built-in rechargeable battery is another key feature contributing to its portability. On paper, the speaker offers a battery life of up to 24 hours. During our real-world tests, we clocked around 20 hours of battery life, which is brilliant. The USB-C charging port ensures a quick and convenient recharge, and the Move 2 also supports wireless charging through the bundled wireless charging base, which is quite convenient.
Connectivity
One of the standout features of SONOS devices is their seamless connectivity, and the Move 2 continues this tradition. When connected to your home Wi-Fi network, the Move 2 integrates seamlessly with the SONOS ecosystem, through the SONOS app, allowing for multi-room audio synchronisation and access to a plethora of streaming services.
Bluetooth functionality, on the other hand, enables a direct connection to your devices, making the Move 2 an excellent companion for outdoor adventures where Wi-Fi may not be available. The transition between these modes is smooth, thanks to SONOS’s user-friendly app, ensuring that you can effortlessly switch between using the Move 2 as a stationary home speaker and a portable device on the go.
Sound Quality
The heart of any audio device lies in its ability to deliver a captivating listening experience, and the SONOS Move 2 does not disappoint. The device features three class-D amplifiers, which have been designed for the unique acoustic architecture of the speaker. A pair of angled tweeters produce a sharp and precise high-frequency response, enhancing stereo separation.
A single mid-woofer guarantees the accurate reproduction of mid-range vocal frequencies and deep bass tones. Overall, the SONOS Move 2 offers crisp highs and deep, resonant lows. Whether you’re playing your favourite upbeat tracks or immersing yourself in a podcast, the clarity and richness of the audio are remarkable.
The automatic Trueplay technology further enhances the listening experience by automatically tuning the sound based on the speaker’s surroundings, ensuring optimal performance in any environment. The Move 2’s stereo sound capabilities add depth to the audio, creating a more immersive experience. Even at higher volumes, the sound remains distortion-free.
Smart Features
Building on the success of its predecessor, the Move 2 incorporates a range of smart features that elevate its usability. The inclusion of voice control through popular virtual assistants such as Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant enhances the hands-free experience. Whether you’re adjusting the volume, skipping tracks, or checking the weather, the Move 2 responds promptly to your voice commands.
Furthermore, the SONOS app provides a centralised hub for controlling the Move 2 and other SONOS devices in your home. The app’s intuitive interface allows for easy customisation of sound settings, grouping speakers for synchronised playback, and accessing a wide range of streaming services.
Verdict
Overall, the SONOS Move 2 successfully builds upon the strengths of its predecessor, delivering a portable speaker that seamlessly combines style, durability, and exceptional audio quality. Its versatility in connectivity, robust build, and impressive battery life make it a go-to choice for both indoor and outdoor settings.
While the Move 2 comes with a premium price tag, the investment is justified by the premium audio experience it offers. Whether you’re a dedicated audiophile or a casual listener, the SONOS Move 2 stands out as a reliable and feature-rich option in the competitive landscape of portable speakers, reaffirming SONOS’s commitment to pushing the boundaries of audio technology.
