Review: TOZO Open Buds

In the ever-expanding landscape of wireless earbuds, TOZO has carved a niche for itself with its commitment to delivering high-quality audio experiences at an affordable price point. The TOZO Open Buds, the latest addition to the company’s lineup, has generated considerable buzz. Priced competitively and boasting an array of features, these earbuds aim to cater to the discerning audiophile on a budget. In this review, we deep-dive into the design, audio performance, comfort, and overall user experience of the TOZO Open Buds.
Design and Build Quality
The TOZO Open Buds arrive in a sleek, compact charging case that exudes a premium feel despite its affordability. It’s a bit bigger than most wireless earbuds you are used to – possibly double the size. However, the reason for that is the open-ear design these earbuds have adopted. The case is constructed from durable plastic, with a smooth matte finish that resists fingerprints.
It, however, is still small enough to slip into your pocket, making it an excellent travel companion. The lid is magnetic, providing a satisfying snap when closed, ensuring the buds are securely protected. The earbuds themselves follow a minimalist design since they share a design reminiscent of typical earphones, excluding the in-ear portion. The inner side features a flat surface housing the driver.
Achieving the perfect fit is made possible by the earband, which can be swivelled 90 degrees and tilted 60 degrees. While they may not break new ground in terms of aesthetics, the build quality is commendable. The earbuds feel sturdy and well-constructed, showcasing TOZO’s attention to detail. Inside the box, you get the TOZO Open Buds Wireless Earbuds, the charging case, the charging cable, and the quick guide.
Comfort and Fit
The standout feature of the TOZO Open Buds is their air-conduction design, placing the speaker drivers over the ear canal. This design is particularly beneficial for runners, enabling them to stay attuned to ambient sounds during their workouts. Additionally, it proves advantageous for individuals whose ear shapes aren’t conducive to traditional in-ear buds.
Complementing this innovation are the ear hooks mentioned before, which are intricately connected to the buds through a metal hinge mechanism. Featuring a seven-stage adjustment and providing satisfying tactile feedback, these ear hooks contribute to the overall ergonomic design of the Open Buds. TOZO has prioritised comfort in the design of the Open Buds, and it shows. The lightweight design contributes to prolonged comfort during extended listening sessions.
Audio Performance
The true test of any pair of earbuds lies in their audio performance, and this is where the TOZO Open Buds shine. Equipped with 14.2mm dynamic drivers, these earbuds deliver a surprisingly robust and clear sound signature. The bass response is punchy without being overwhelming, providing a satisfying thump to bass-heavy tracks. The mids are well-defined, ensuring vocals and instruments stand out in the mix, while the highs maintain clarity without becoming harsh.
TOZO also uses its very own ORIGX Acoustic Technology to boost the overall audio performance. The earbuds support Bluetooth 5.3, which not only improves connectivity but also enhances power efficiency, prolonging battery life.
Boasting an IPX6 water-resistant rating, the Open Buds offer durability against water exposure. The bi-axial rotation feature allows users to angle the earbuds in two different ways, catering to individual preferences for optimal comfort. Using the TOZO App, you can update firmware and choose from a selection of five preset EQs to tailor the audio experience to your liking.
Battery Life and Charging
The TOZO Open Buds offer an impressive battery life. The earbuds each are equipped with 70mAh batteries, while the charging case comes with a 650mAh battery. According to TOZO’s specifications, these buds can deliver a continuous 12 hours of usage on a single charge, assuming a volume level of 50% and utilising the AAC codec. With the charging case in play, the overall playtime extends significantly to an impressive 42 hours.
The USB-C charging port is a welcome addition, offering faster charging times and compatibility with modern devices. The indicator lights on the front of the case provide a clear visual representation of the battery status, ensuring you are aware of when it’s time to recharge.
Touch Controls and User Interface
The TOZO Open Buds feature touch-sensitive controls on each earbud, allowing you to manage playback, answer calls, and so on. The controls are responsive, and the learning curve is minimal. A series of taps or holds on the earbuds’ surface provides an intuitive command over various functions, enhancing the overall user experience.
Verdict
The TOZO Open Buds stand out as a formidable contender in the competitive wireless earbud market. Combining a sleek design, impressive audio performance, and a feature-rich user experience, these earbuds offer excellent value for their price. TOZO has successfully struck a balance between affordability and quality, making the Open Buds an attractive option for budget-conscious audiophiles.

Apple’s Beats Unveils Powerbeats Pro 2 with Heart-Rate Monitoring

Apple Inc.’s Beats division has unveiled the long-awaited Powerbeats Pro 2, which features noise cancellation, a heart-rate monitor, and a revamped design aimed at athletes. This new model incorporates capabilities seen in Apple’s AirPods, such as transparency mode for better external noise awareness and the H2 chip for enhanced sound quality. Additionally, it offers improved spatial audio for a 3D listening experience and comes with a smaller, wireless charging case.
The heart-rate monitor is a notable first for Apple-designed earbuds, expanding the company’s health-related features, and utilizes technology found in the Apple Watch. Despite a slow holiday season for Apple’s wearables business—with sales in the division falling nearly 2% to about $11.8 billion—the introduction of these new earbuds is anticipated to drive interest and sales.
Priced at $250, the same as the previous model, the new Powerbeats Pro 2 will be available in black, orange, purple, and a color called quicksand. This price point matches the AirPods Pro 2, although the Powerbeats may be more appealing to athletes due to their secure ear hooks.
Apple Vice President Oliver Schusser, who oversees Beats as well as the company’s sports, TV+, and music initiatives, hailed the new Powerbeats as “the most impressive product in Beats’ history.” Acquired by Apple in 2014 for $3 billion, Beats remains the company’s largest acquisition to date.
The heart-rate monitor will be compatible with fitness apps like Peloton, Nike Run Club, Ladder, and Slopes, with data integration into the Apple Health app. The earbuds will also be compatible with Android devices. Apple is reportedly working on AirPods with heart-rate monitoring, though they are still many months away from release.
In terms of battery life, the Powerbeats Pro 2 holds an advantage over AirPods, with 10 hours of usage on their own and 45 hours with the charging case, compared to six hours for AirPods alone and up to 30 hours with the case. However, AirPods continue to offer unique features, such as a new hearing aid functionality.
