Nothing Phone (2a) Review: A Stylish Mid-Ranger with Substance
In a crowded smartphone arena where every brand shouts for your attention, the Nothing Phone (2a) cuts a distinct figure. It’s a phone that dares to be different, prioritising both affordability and quality in equal measure. It boasts a head-turning transparent design, a clean software experience, and capable cameras, thereby rewriting the rulebook for mid-range smartphones.
Design
The Nothing Phone (2a) throws subtlety out the window. Its transparent back, offering a glimpse into the phone’s inner workings, is a conversation starter unlike any other. The integrated Glyph interface – essentially a network of LED lights – adds a touch of whimsy, subtly illuminating for notifications and charging. Unlike the Phone (1) and Phone (2), where the Glyph interface covered the entire rear area of the device, Nothing has gone for a smaller area towards the top around the camera module on the Phone (2a).
However, the transparent back, despite its cool factor, is a fingerprint magnet and attracts dust like a moth to a flame. A case is practically mandatory, which slightly undermines the transparent aesthetic. The phone itself feels well-built, with a light but sturdy plastic frame and a grippy matte finish. The flat display with symmetrical bezels offers a premium look, further accentuated by the pre-installed screen protector – a thoughtful touch by Nothing.
Display
The Nothing Phone (2a) features a flexible 6.7-inch AMOLED display, which offers vibrant colours and deep blacks. With a resolution of 1084-by-2412 pixels, the screen is sharp, and the 120Hz refresh rate ensures smooth scrolling and a responsive touch experience. Whether you’re watching videos or browsing the web, the display does not disappoint. You also get a contrast ratio of 5,000,000:1, 2160 Hz PWM frequency, and 1300 nits of peak brightness. The display is also protected by Corning Gorilla Glass 5.
Performance
Under the hood, the Nothing Phone (2a) is powered by a MediaTek Dimensity 7200 Pro chip, paired with either 8GB or 12GB of RAM. For onboard storage, you can choose between 128 GB or 256 GB. The performance is commendable for its price point, with apps launching quickly and games running smoothly. While it may not compete with flagship devices, it handles everyday tasks with ease. Multitasking is smooth, apps launch quickly, and even light gaming runs without a hitch.
Software
One of the biggest selling points of the Nothing Phone (2a) is its software experience. It runs Nothing OS 2.5, based on Android 14. This translates to a clean, bloatware-free interface that prioritises user experience. Unlike other manufacturers who load their phones with unnecessary apps, Nothing offers a refreshingly stock Android experience. The animations are smooth, the overall feel is minimalistic, and users have a high degree of customisation available.
Nothing has committed to three years of OS updates and four years of security patches, ensuring your phone stays up-to-date and secure for a good period. This is a major plus in a world where some manufacturers leave mid-range phones behind after a year.
Camera
The Nothing Phone (2a) sports a dual-camera system on the back – a 50MP main sensor and a 50MP ultrawide sensor. In good lighting conditions, the main sensor captures detailed and vibrant photos with good colour balance. The ultrawide sensor also performs well, offering a wider perspective for capturing landscapes or group shots. However, low-light performance is a mixed bag.
The front-facing camera is a decent 32MP sensor, capturing good selfies in well-lit environments. However, like the rear camera, low-light selfies tend to suffer from noise and lack of detail. Overall, the camera system on the Nothing Phone (2a) is good enough for everyday use, but photography enthusiasts might find themselves wanting more, especially in low-light scenarios.
Battery Life
The Nothing Phone (2a) packs a 5000mAh battery, which is ample for most users. The phone can easily last more than a day on a single charge. The phone supports fast charging as well, allowing you to quickly refuel when needed. Nothing does not bundle a charger with the device. Inside the box, you get the Phone (2a), a Nothing cable, a SIM tray ejector tool, and the warranty card.
Verdict
The Nothing Phone (2a) is a compelling option in the mid-range smartphone segment. It boasts a unique and eye-catching design, a clean and bloatware-free software experience, a capable camera system, solid performance, and impressive battery life. It’s a phone that feels more premium than its price tag suggests and is a strong contender for those looking for a budget-friendly yet capable device.
Price: AED 1199 (8/128GB), AED 1399 (12/256GB)
Nothing Phone (2a) AED 1199 onwards
Summary
The Nothing Phone (2a) throws subtlety out the window. Its transparent back, offering a glimpse into the phone’s inner workings, is a conversation starter unlike any other. The integrated Glyph interface – essentially a network of LED lights – adds a touch of whimsy, subtly illuminating for notifications and charging.

The Predator ES Storm is powered by a 500W hub motor, that helps to easily conquer hills and flat roads, with the motor capable of reaching a peak of over 900W. Meanwhile, the Kinetic Energy Recovery System (KERS) recharges the scooter by converting braking energy into usable power, making it more energy-efficient and extending its battery life, while also reducing the wear and tear of the mechanical brakes.
The powerful 42V/16 Ah Li-Ion battery guarantees travel distances of up to 60 km on a single charge. Riders will experience unmatched stability and control, thanks to the 10-inch tubeless tyres and the front fork suspension that acts as a shock absorber. The Predator ES Storm scooters come with signal lights on the handlebar, a front disc and a rear E-ABS electric brake, for enhanced safety, and weighs just 20.45 kg.
Acer ES Series 5 Select eScooter
With a powerful 500W engine, high-capacity battery, foldable design, responsive braking, and shock-absorbing system, riders of the new Acer Series 5 Select eScooters can cruise the city streets effortlessly and in comfort, using four throttle modes with cruise control.
