Huawei Nova 12 SE Review: A Mid-Range Masterclass

Huawei’s Nova series has carved a niche for itself in the crowded mid-range market, offering stylish designs and competitive features at attractive prices. The Nova 12 SE carries this torch forward, boasting a stunning display, long battery life, and a capable camera system.
Design
The Nova 12 SE is undeniably eye-catching. It comes in three colours such as green, black, and white – we received the green variant for this review. The phone is constructed from a lightweight plastic material that feels comfortable in the hand, despite its large 6.67-inch display. A subtle curve along the edges adds to the ergonomic design.
The phone’s highlight is undoubtedly the OLED display. With a sharp FHD+ resolution (1080-by-2400 pixels) and a smooth 90Hz refresh rate, scrolling and navigating feels fluid and responsive. You also get a 270 Hz touch sampling rate. Colours appear vibrant and viewing angles are excellent. Whether you’re catching up on social media or watching videos, the display delivers a captivating visual experience.
A small punch-hole cutout for the front-facing 32 MP camera sits unobtrusively in the top centre. The bezels surrounding the display are minimal, maximising the screen real estate. A fingerprint sensor for secure unlocking is integrated seamlessly into the power button on the right side. The volume buttons are located just above. The bottom edge houses the USB-C port, the dual SIM tray, and the speaker grille. Unfortunately, the Nova 12 SE lacks a headphone jack, so you’ll need to rely on a USB-C to 3.5mm adapter or wireless earbuds/headphones.
Specifications
The Nova 12 SE is powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 680, a capable mid-range chipset that can handle everyday tasks with ease. Multitasking between apps is smooth, and most games run well on medium to low graphics settings. The phone comes with 8GB of RAM and 256GB of onboard storage. This provides ample space for most users’ needs, but there’s no expandable storage option via microSD card.
Software
The Nova 12 SE runs on Huawei’s latest EMUI 14 operating system, built on top of Android. EMUI 14 offers a clean and user-friendly interface with plenty of customisation options. New features include weather wallpapers, interactive wallpapers that react to touch, and a “Superhub” function that allows you to connect and control compatible smart home devices. You also get access to Huawei’s AppGallery and Petal Search which let you install all your favourite apps without any hassle.
Cameras
The Nova 12 SE boasts a triple-camera system on the back, consisting of a 108MP main sensor with f/1.9 aperture, an 8MP ultrawide sensor with f/2.2 aperture, and a 2MP macro sensor with f/2.4 aperture. In good lighting conditions, the main camera takes decent photos with good detail and colour reproduction. The ultrawide sensor provides a wider perspective for capturing landscapes or group shots, with good-looking images.
Low-light performance is good and images end up with good details. The 32MP front-facing camera takes sharp selfies, even in moderate lighting. It also offers various beauty modes for those who want to enhance their photos.
Battery
The Nova 12 SE boasts a generous 4500mAh battery, a capacity that inspires confidence for extended use. Huawei claims the phone can offer up to 31.7 hours of continuous calling, 24.3 hours of local video playback, and 13.6 hours of web browsing – all under ideal lab conditions with medium brightness and Wi-Fi connectivity.
In real-world usage, these numbers will naturally vary depending on individual habits. However, during our tests, the Nova 12 SE lived up to its promise of impressive battery life. It lasted a full day, sometimes pushing into the second day on a single charge.
Adding to the convenience factor, the Nova 12 SE supports Huawei’s 66W SuperCharge Turbo 2.0 fast charging technology. This allows you to quickly top up your battery when needed. A mere 30 minutes of charging can take the phone from 0% to 70%, ensuring you’re back in action fast.
Performance
The Nova 12 SE is equipped with Qualcomm Snapdragon 680, a mid-range chipset. This processor is designed to offer a balance between performance and power efficiency. For everyday tasks such as browsing the web, checking emails, and using social media apps, it delivers smooth and responsive performance. Multitasking between apps also feels fluid. For casual gaming, the Nova 12 SE handles most titles well on medium to low graphics settings.
Verdict
Huawei’s Nova series has consistently offered compelling mid-range options, balancing features with affordability. The 4500mAh battery delivers exceptional endurance, easily lasting a full day for most users and potentially stretching to two days on a single charge. The 66W fast charging technology adds further convenience, allowing you to quickly top up the battery when needed.
Performance-wise, the Qualcomm Snapdragon 680 processor handles everyday tasks and casual gaming well. The EMUI 14 operating system contributes to smooth performance by efficiently allocating resources. The Huawei Nova 12 SE is a compelling option for users seeking a mid-range phone with exceptional battery life and capable performance for everyday tasks.

The KIOXIA EXCERIA PLUS microSDXC Memory Card 128GB stands out as a reliable and versatile storage solution for a wide range of devices. It effectively balances capacity and performance, with the U3/V30 ratings ensuring dependable 4K video recording and the A1 rating offering satisfactory performance for Android applications. The robust design and the trusted KIOXIA brand further enhance its appeal, backed by a 5-year warranty.
While the write speeds aren’t the absolute top-tier, they are more than adequate for the majority of intended uses. Overall, the KIOXIA EXCERIA PLUS 128GB microSDXC card is a compelling choice in its category, providing a dependable and well-rounded storage solution for capturing memories, expanding device storage, and running applications efficiently on the go.
