Sony WH-CH720N Noise Cancelling Headphones Review: A Budget-Friendly ANC Winner?

In the ever-crowded headphone market, striking a balance between affordability and features can be a challenge. Sony’s WH-CH720N headphones enter the ring, offering active noise cancellation (ANC) at an AED 394 price point.
Design and Comfort
The WH-CH720N boasts a lightweight plastic design that feels comfortable during short listening sessions. The ear cups are well-padded, and the headband offers a good amount of adjustability. However, I did feel occasionally that the ear cups pressed slightly on the ears during extended use, causing mild discomfort. The build quality feels a bit plasticky, which is understandable given the price point. While they don’t scream premium, they feel sturdy enough for everyday use.
Noise Cancellation
It’s great that Sony is offering the ANC functionality in the WH-CH720N at the price point it is available at. The ANC feature effectively reduces low-frequency drones such as airplane noise and traffic rumble. This makes them ideal for travelling or blocking out distractions in noisy environments.
Transparency Mode
The WH-CH720N also features a transparency mode that allows you to hear ambient sounds without taking the headphones off. This is useful for staying aware of your surroundings while crossing streets or having conversations without fully removing the headphones. The transparency mode on the WH-CH720N is well-implemented, offering a natural-sounding reproduction of your environment.
Sound Quality
The WH-CH720N boasts a sound signature that leans towards the bass-heavy side. Bass lovers will likely appreciate the punchy low-end tones, perfect for genres such as hip-hop and EDM. Furthermore, Sony’s Headphones Connect app offers a customisable EQ. With some tweaking, you can dial back the bass and bring out the clarity in mids and highs for a more balanced listening experience.
The app also offers a few presets like “Bright” and “Treble Boost” for those who prefer a more sculpted sound. Overall, the sound quality is very good for the price range. While audiophiles might crave more neutrality, casual listeners who enjoy a bass-forward sound will find the WH-CH720N enjoyable.
Battery Life
One of the WH-CH720N’s strong points is its impressive battery life. Sony claims up to 35 hours with ANC on and a whopping 57 hours with it turned off. These numbers hold true in real-world testing, making them a great option for long journeys or extended listening sessions without worrying about running out of juice. The headphones also support quick charging, providing a few hours of playback time with just a 10-minute charge.
Call Quality
The built-in microphone on the WH-CH720N is decent for casual phone calls. These headphones are suitable for hands-free calls and worked well during our tests. The WH-CH720N connects to devices via Bluetooth and offers basic playback controls on the ear cups. These include volume control, play/pause, and skipping tracks. The Sony Headphones Connect app unlocks further functionalities such as EQ adjustments, managing ANC and transparency mode settings, and even customising the button functions.
Verdict
The Sony WH-CH720N sits in a sweet spot for budget-conscious users looking for a pair of wireless headphones with ANC. At an AED 394 price tag, they offer a good balance of features, including decent sound quality and effective ANC against ambient noise.
