Nothing Phone 3a Pro Review: A Bold Step Forward

Published

on

Nothing has carved out a distinct identity in the smartphone market with its transparent design philosophy and innovative Glyph Interface. The Nothing Phone 3a Pro represents the company’s most ambitious effort yet, aiming to bridge the gap between mid-range affordability and premium-tier performance. But does it truly earn its “Pro” badge, or is it simply a stylish contender in a crowded field?

Design & Build Quality
The Phone 3a Pro retains Nothing’s signature transparent aesthetic but elevates it with a more polished execution. The aluminum frame is now slimmer and seamlessly integrated. The overall feel is more premium — closer to a flagship than a mid-ranger — with excellent weight distribution and satisfyingly tactile buttons.

Subtle refinements set it apart from earlier Nothing phones: the edges are less boxy than the Phone 2, the bezels are thinner, and a new matte texture option reduces smudges. A slight curvature to the back improves ergonomics, making it more comfortable to hold. These tweaks don’t dilute Nothing’s bold design language but instead refine it, ensuring the 3a Pro stands out in a sea of generic glass slabs.

Glyph Interface
The Glyph lighting system, once seen as a quirky novelty, has matured into a genuinely functional feature. The 3a Pro expands the LED zones to 3 sections with a total of 26 individual zones, allowing for more intricate light patterns and notifications. A new Glyph Composer tool lets users create custom light sequences, while deeper app integrations—like Uber tracking and fitness progress—make the system more practical.

While skeptics might still dismiss the Glyphs as flash over substance, Nothing has undeniably made them more useful. The improved notification system, which assigns distinct light patterns to different apps, ensures you can identify alerts without even glancing at the screen. It’s a small but meaningful step toward blending form and function.

Display
The Nothing Phone 3a Pro boasts a visually impressive display, featuring a 6.77-inch FHD+ flexible AMOLED screen that delivers vibrant colours and deep contrasts. Notably, it achieves a peak brightness of 3000 nits, ensuring excellent visibility even in bright outdoor conditions. The display’s 120Hz adaptive refresh rate provides smooth scrolling and fluid animations, while the high touch sampling rate enhances responsiveness. Furthermore, display is protected by Panda Glass.

Software
Running on Nothing OS 3.1 based on Android 15, the 3a Pro delivers one of the cleanest Android experiences outside of Google’s Pixel lineup. Bloatware is minimal, and the interface is snappy, with thoughtful touches like dot-matrix-style widgets that echo the Glyph aesthetic.

Camera System
The Nothing Phone 3a Pro’s camera system is designed to capture versatile and high-quality images. It features a triple rear camera setup, headlined by a 50MP main sensor with optical image stabilization (OIS) for sharp, blur-free shots. Complementing the main camera is a 50MP periscope lens, offering optical zoom capabilities, enabling users to capture detailed images at a distance.

Additionally, there is an 8MP ultra-wide lens, providing a broader field of view for capturing expansive landscapes and group photos. For selfies and video calls, the device sports a 50MP front-facing camera. This combination of hardware, combined with Nothing’s software processing, aims to deliver a reliable and enjoyable photography experience.

The Nothing Phone 3a Pro’s video capabilities offer a range of options, allowing you to capture moments with versatility. It supports 4K recording at 30 frames per second for high-resolution clarity, and 1080p recording at both 30 and 60 frames per second for smoother, more adaptable footage. For capturing dynamic slow-motion sequences, the device offers 1080p recording at 120 frames per second, and for accelerated time-lapse videos, it provides the flexibility of both 4K and 1080p resolutions.

Battery
The Nothing Phone 3a Pro is equipped with a substantial 5000mAh battery, designed to provide extended usage. For rapid refueling, it supports 50W wired charging, achieving a full 100% charge in approximately 56 minutes, and reaching 50% capacity in just 19 minutes. Additionally, the device offers 7.5W reverse wired charging, enabling it to power other compatible devices.

Performance
The Nothing Phone 3a Pro is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 7s Gen 3 Mobile Platform, a 4nm TSMC-processed chipset featuring an 8-core CPU with speeds up to 2.5 GHz. This CPU configuration includes a prime Cortex-A720 core clocked at 2.5 GHz, three performance Cortex-A720 cores at 2.4 GHz, and four efficiency Cortex-A520 cores at 1.8 GHz, ensuring a balance of performance and power efficiency. Graphics are handled by the Qualcomm Adreno GPU, while AI processing is managed by the Qualcomm Hexagon NPU, integrated within the Qualcomm AI Engine, which includes a v73 DSP core operating at a maximum frequency of 1.5 GHz.

Paired with 12GB of RAM and 256GB of UFS 4.0 storage, the 3a Pro handles demanding tasks with ease. Benchmarks such as Geekbench 6 (~1,800 single-core, ~5,200 multi-core) place it firmly in high-end territory, and real-world performance is just as impressive—apps launch instantly, and games such as Genshin Impact run smoothly at high settings.

It’s not quite on par with the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 beasts dominating the premium market, but it’s close enough that most users won’t notice a difference. For the price, the performance is exceptional. Compared to established “Pro”, the 3a Pro holds its own in design and software.

Verdict
The Nothing Phone 3a Pro is the brand’s most mature offering yet, blending striking design, capable performance, and thoughtful software into a package that feels genuinely unique. It’s not a flagship killer, nor does it need to be—it carves its own path, offering a refreshing alternative to the monotony of mainstream smartphones.

Pros
✔ Unique, eye-catching design
✔ Clean, bloat-free software
✔ Strong performance for the price
✔ Improved Glyph functionality

Cons
❌ Camera still not elite
❌ No wireless charging

Price: AED 1749

They also feature our customizable AniMe Vision lighting array on their lids, originally pioneered on our Zephyrus machines. With an array of 810 LEDs shining through precision-milled holes, you can show off your style with a wide selection of pre-made animations, import a GIF of your choice, or animate your own image from scratch.

Specifications
Under the hood, the Strix SCAR 18 is powered by up to an Intel Core Ultra 9 275HX processor, featuring 24 cores and a boost clock of up to 5.4GHz. Verdict
The 2025 ROG Strix SCAR 18 G835LX is a triumph of engineering, blending cutting-edge hardware and performance, a breathtaking display, and innovative cooling into a single package.
