Review: Sony A6400

Published

on

Sony’s new A6400 is the latest camera added to its APS-C mirrorless lineup. The A6400 sits right between the A6300 and the A6500 and comes packed with a wide range of features, including real-time Eye AF and tracking and the camera also promises a very fast autofocus acquisition speed of 0.02 seconds. The body of the Sony A6400 is priced at AED 3799, but you’ll be able to get it as a kit with a 16-50mm lens for AED 4099, or with an 18-135mm lens for AED 5199.

The new A6400 replaces the A6300 APS-C mirrorless camera. The A6400 also comes with an autofocus (AF) system that packs in 425 phase-detection AF points and an equal number of contrast detection points which cover roughly 84 percent of the image area. This is paired with a new Bionz X image processor, which lets you lock focus as quickly as 0.02 of a second.

The Sony A6400 also comes with Sony’s new real-time Eye AF feature which uses artificial intelligence (AI) to detect people. This feature automatically kicks-in, in any AF mode, as soon you half-press the shutter button. The A6400 also accompanies a new real-time tracking feature which uses AI for object recognition.

Under the hood, the photography and videography of the Sony A6400 are powered by a 24.2-megapixel APS-C sensor, that features a maximum native ISO value of 32,000. The camera also supports 4K video recording without pixel binning and comes with an OLED viewfinder. You also get 11fps burst shooting, 3-inch touchscreen LCD with a 180-degree tilt functionality and built-in Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and NFC.

The 3-inch touchscreen LCD allows you to establish focus or trigger the shutter with the touch of a finger. The A6400 can shoot 11 frames per second with full AF/AE tracking (or 8 frames per second in silent shooting mode) for up to 116 frames JPEGs or 46 frames RAW files. The A6400 also features the highest ISO range from a Sony APS-C camera, with a native ISO ceiling of 32000, which is expandable to 102400.

Along with the 4K video recording capabilities, the A6400 can also record Full HD at 120fps at up to 100 Mbps, to create 4x or 5x slow-motion sequences with AF tracking. In addition, the A6400 can create time-lapse footage as the camera features built-in interval recording that can be set anywhere between 1 and 60 seconds, with a shot range up to 9999.

Sony bundles a 64GB Class 10 SDXC memory card with the camera. Also in the box, you get a neck strap, instructions, and a power adapter for charging. While the body of the camera does not come with any sort of stabilisation itself, if you do opt for a kit with one of the lenses, the lenses themselves feature built-in stabilisation with Sony’s Optical Steady Shot technology.

As you can see from everything I have mentioned above, this camera is filled to the brim with features which will appeal to both beginners and professionals alike. Since the Sony A6300 is quite compact in size, the camera is perfect for those looking to shoot on busy streets and capturing candid shots. Landscape shots have excellent detailing with very little chromatic aberration.

Scene mode lets you choose from various scene presets such as macro, night, sunset, and so on. You also get a panorama mode, which takes consecutive shots and stitches them together on the fly. The Sony A6300 continues to deliver excellent low-light shots with good detail and colour rendition.

When it comes to video recording, the Sony A6400 does not let you down. You get crisp and concise footage under good lighting conditions. Even under low light conditions, we ended up with some really good non-grainy footage. At a starting price of AED 3799, the Sony A6400 offers value for money, coupled with excellent features and performance. If you are a videographer, the Sony A6400 is definitely worth a look.

Price: AED 3799 (body only), AED 4099 (with 16-50mm lens), and AED 5199 (with 18-135mm lens).

Sony Launches New FE 85mm F1.4 GM II Lens

Published

on

Sony Middle East and Africa announces the FE 85mm F1.4 GM II (SEL85F14GM2) a premium lens offering a supreme blend of high resolution and stunning bokeh with fast autofocus (AF) in a compact body. This is a second-generation lens that inherits the optical design that achieved a high-level fusion of bokeh and resolution that was highly praised in the first-generation model and generously incorporates the latest technology. When paired with the latest Sony Alpha series cameras, it is an ideal option for a wide variety of creative uses in both photography and videography, including portraiture, wedding, travel, and cinematic video.

The advanced and refined optical design and elements of the FE 85mm F1.4 GM II bring together appealing bokeh and enhanced high resolution, making it ideal for portrait photography. Packed with two XA (extreme aspherical) and two ED (extra-low dispersion) lenses, the state-of-the-art optical design effectively suppresses aberrations. This combination offers corner-to-corner resolution and rendering, resulting in outstanding image quality. Moreover, Sony’s original Nano AR Coating II technology effectively subdues flare and ghosting for clear, crisp images. The 11-blade circular aperture and optimisation of spherical aberration during the design and manufacturing process provide the beautiful, soft bokeh that is the hallmark of the G Master series.

The FE 85mm F1.4 GM II’s AF is agile, maximising the speed advantage of advanced camera bodies. For stills, it is up to 3 times faster compared to the previous model, tracking moving subjects with high precision. It keeps up flawlessly with the Alpha 9 III’s 120fps continuous shooting, and subject tracking performance is improved by as much as 7 times. Compared to the current 85mm F1.4 GM1, the weight of the FE 85mm F1.4 GM II (642 grams) is approximately 20% lighter and 13% smaller in volume, which is achieved through the latest mechanical technology and optical design. The FE 85mm F1.4 GM II has a filter diameter of φ77 mm, a diameter of 84.7 mm and a length of 107.3 mm.

For smooth movie creation at F1.4, the FE 85mm F1.4 GM II has an XD linear motor. Focus breathing is minimal, and in-body focus breathing compensation is supported. It has two customisable focus hold buttons and an AF/MF switch offers flexible operability, while an independent aperture ring and Linear Response MF focus control provide the kind of intuitive control that creative shooting demands. The front lens element features a fluorine coating, which makes it easy to remove fingerprints, dust, oil, and other contaminants from the lens surface. The dust and moisture-resistant design provides extra reliability for outdoor use in challenging conditions.

The FE 85mm F1.4 GM II will be available in the Middle East from September 2024.

Canon Adds New Cinema RAW Light Recording Formats to EOS C500 Mark II Via Firmware Update

Published

on

Canon Europe has announced the release of a new free-of-charge firmware update for the EOS C500 Mark II, further enhancing the camera’s professional functionality. The firmware update adds 12-bit Cinema RAW Light formats: LT (Light), ST (Standard) and HQ (High Quality), improving workflow flexibility and providing more options post-production. Previously made available for the EOS R5 C and EOS C70, this highly requested feature allows users to select a scalable range of internal RAW recording data rates that either further enhance the fidelity of the sensor output or reduce file sizes – all while maintaining the high-quality 12-bit colour information.

The EOS C500 Mark II features a 5.9K full-frame sensor, internal RAW recording, interchangeable lens mount and highly configurable modular design. The camera is a popular choice for television and cinematic productions due to its impressive image quality, extensive connectivity, and compact body.

Aron Randhawa, Senior Product Specialist at Canon Europe, said, “Cinema RAW Light is continually evolving and has a clear advantage over heavily compressed formats, especially for colour grading and VFX pipelines. All three scalable new formats are 12-bit, even at higher frame rates, with no chroma subsampling, enabling cinematographers to unleash the full capability of their production camera.”
